Retiring my '04 chevy crew cab 4wheel drive, and considering a similar type truck.
What have you had experience with, I'm comparing Toyota's Tundra, another Chevy, and Ford f150?
Thanks for your feedback.

I've had them all... I had a '12 Tundra SuperCrew earlier this year until a guy on hwy 39 totalled me out. My little girl and I walked away with only bumps and bruses. I had no idea that a vehicle could have some many damn airbags (that all do, but still...). A week later, when it was time to get a new one, I had no hesitation going right back with a '13 Tundra. I did go from the 4.6 to the 5.7 though. Anyway... Its a good solid truck that I cant find any flaws in. It looks good, it feels good, and it safe.

/count me as a Tundra vote

The old truck

I trade trucks fairly often. Just got the '14 Silverado and it is by far the best thing on the road right now. My previous truck was an F-150, which was okay, but the chevy just feels better. My advice:

- If you are looking for gas mileage, the GM is the best on the market. I am getting 18 MPG city right now...and almost 24 over the road.
- Stay away from the Ford eco-boost engines. They brag about their power and gas mileage, but it's one or the other. If you are using the power, you are going to get terrible gas mileage. And the towing sucks. And at its best, the gas mileage might equal the GM trucks...and that's with a v-6 engine compared to Chevy's 5.3 V-8. Just terrible.
- I personally don't like the Toyotas. They just don't have the creature comforts that some of the domestics have. I had one a few years back, so I admittedly haven't driven a newer one, but I hated the one I had...terrible gas mileage, terrible ride, plain jane trim.
- If you are going with a GM, the new GMC Sierras look better than the Chevy Silverados, but they are priced about $1500 more for the same truck trimmed out.

My tip is to download the autotrader app to your smartphone. Then once you have decided what you are looking for, it becomes pretty easy to search. This app will let you be specific to year, color, mileage, etc. Also will search an x-mile radius around you.
Within the last 12 months, I've bought wife a used 2011 odyssey (Jackson) me a 2013 tacoma (meridian) and my daughter who turned 16 a 2005 altima (Brandon)
I found great deals on these vehicles. I also found it seems easier to haggle prices via email or text as opposed to playing their game on their field.
As for opinion on make I strongly suggest toyota. They almost never break and resale is 10x better than American cars.
Sold my 1998 tacoma with 250k on it for 8k+.

There is a wreck at the intersection of Stennis and 39 almost every week. There should be a red light there.

Thats a great point... My '12 had 14k miles on it when I had the wreck. His insurance co (state farm) cut me a check for $33,500ish a week after the wreck just for my total loss. I was blown away that it had that kind of value after I had it for right at a year. I thought for sure I would have come out owing money to toyota financial. Thankfully, that wasnt the case.

Right now the Chevys look good, ride good, have more features, better milage. But...they just about always start losing/burning oil around 120, 000 miles. They also still have that damn gas cap issue.
Fords are lasting longer. 300, 000 is just about a given if you don't just raise hell in it. Mileage isn't great but not bad. Stiff ride. Higher bed is a problrm sometimes.
Toyota and Nissan suck gas. Nissan is awful.

I have a 12 Sierra Crew Cab Z71 with the 5.3 liter. When it cuts the engine to half power my fuel mileage shoots up over 30. Only thing is anything over a 1% incline causes it to go back to full power. On the interstate I can keep my average up around 22. Driving local, which is what I mostly do is around 15.5. Bought it in April 2012 and just passed the 10000 mile mark this month.

Completely disagree with this assessment. I recently switched to the F-150 (4x4 offroad)ecoboost from a 12 Z-71. The ecoboost clearly has more power, and I'm getting 16.5 mpg in the city which isn't bad at all for a 4x4.

mine isn't burning oil(yet) but its 2 years old and about to cross 100k miles, and I don't have whatever gas cap issue you speak of. what is that one?

I'll do mine this way. I'm buying American so I scratch out the Toyota. just a principle thing.

Exterior: Chevy - I love the look of the GM pickups
Interior: Ford - their interior is far and away above the GM product right now
Engine: Chevy - As stated above, best blend of power and fuel. Towing is great as well.
Ride: Chevy - rides like a pillow. ford is stiff.

that's how I break down my main 4 points when buying a vehicle

You're buying an American brand. Not necessarily "Made in Murica". Hell, Chevy/GMC is the least American-made American trucks.

I'd buy Tundra because they are assembled in TX by un-unionized workers.

My Tundra came w/ a born in Texas sticker on the back glass. Obviously, it came off on day one but I liked knowing that it is an American truck.

That can be a little misleading. Google Kogod rating. It takes into account where the profits go, where R&D takes place, where money is being invested, etc. Comes out a little different than if you consider just the manufacturing side of things.

I have an '11 and noticed the same thing. If it's not perfectly flat or coasting down a hill, it's in 8-cyl mode.

I just got a 2013 F-150 XLT last month. Best truck I have ever had. Has a very smooth ride and gets 22 mpg on the highway. Also, at the time I bought it there were about $8000 in instant rebates that knocked the price down considerably. Not sure if that is still going on but it made for a great deal.

You average just over 500 miles a month? Damn, even my elderly neighbor puts on more than that going to the grocery store, bingo, and to get her scripts filled.

I bought a used 2011 z71 Crew cab a year ago. At the time, I test drove it and an F150 ecoboost 4x4 in SLT trim, same year model, but double the miles. The Chevy had 14000 when I bought it and the Ford had 30000 at the time. So similar trims and year models yet the Ford was still several grand higher than the Chevy. Ended up going with the Chevy because of price and lower mileage.

Like many have stated, even with the v6 ecoboost, the Chevy 5.3L still gets better gas mileage. The turbocharged v6 in the Ford was noticeably more powerful, however. And comparing those two models, the Fords interiors are much more spacious and nice, even in the cheaper trims. The Platinums and Lariats are such much nicer than the loaded out XLT Chevy's it's not even funny. However, I believe the new 2014 GM's have considerably evened the playing field when it comes to interiors. I've always thought Chevy's are better looking on the outside.

Looking back, I'm glad I saved myself a few pennies and got a "newer" used truck. The previous owner was an elderly man who left it in pristine condition. I loved the power of the ecoboost and the Ford's interior better, but I would make the same choice if I did it over.

I've got a good buddy who is a die-hard Ford guy. He's had a 2007 F-250 Lariat, and multiple newer body style F-150's loaded out. Never owned a Chevy in his life, but when talking to him he said I made the better choice in the long run.

I had one. They are overrated. Yes, you get good mpg in the city. Yes, they have good power. But if you need the power, you will get terrible mpg. Compare mpg of the new direct inject GM 5.3 to the Ford Ecoboost while both are hauling/towing and it isn't even close. This is one of the biggest reasons I made the switch.

And just for clarification, the '12 Z-71 engine probably did suck compared to the Ecoboost. The new ones in the '14 models are much better and that is what I am using for comparison.

Yep. Work from the house. I'm as close to being an agoraphobic, without the fear of leaving the house, as you can be. All I use my truck for is when I meet my drivers or pick up supplies for them. If we go out of town it's always in my wife's car.

dude thanks for that.

that's a great source of information.

so there is only 4% difference in how domestic a chevy vs a ford is.

So people don't buy Dodge's anymore? Not being a smartass, just find it interesting no one has mentioned them in this thread.

I drive a Silverado & love it, so +1 for Chevy.

I wouldn't jump up and down for the 1500 size product but their larger products are better than either chevy or ford right now. the 3500 size just got rated to pull 37,500 lbs which obscene in the class 4-5 market with a 3500 size vehicle

I really like the new GMC Trucks... But I'm a Chevy guy. The F-150 has always seemed like the wal-mart of pickup trucks and dodges just... Well... If you like dodge, they are great. Nothing against them, just not my favorites.

The Asian makes try but they aren't in the same ballpark, to me. They don't have the drivetrains or the bells and whistles the American makes do. They kick the American makes' *** in cars, though (except the new ford fusions... I hope those do excellent for ford because those are excellent vehicles).

I hope my biased opinion helps...

Look for an 89' Silverado 4x4 with the 350 small block (GOAT)...I bought one as my second truck in 2004 with 150k on it. Went to an F150 in Jan after I put another 250k on it. I still use it on the farm and to haul heavy **** because it has way more power than the Ford. The gas mileage sucks (12 city, 17 hwy) because it's a 17'n tank. I'm only slightly kidding about getting one, I miss it but the extra cab and gas mileage is important now.

I am pleased with it. The new 5.3 engine has a lot more pep than the previous edition. The interior is completely overhauled but it is nice. The exterior is kinda boxy but that is what chevy is known for. Gas mileage is off the charts good. It is super quiet inside as well.

Unless you need a work truck,

the best and most reliable truck on the road for the past 8 years has been the Honda Ridgeline. "Men" tend not to buy it because of the insecurity they have with its appearance. Honda designed a truck based on the needs of the average truck owner. Problem is that it is UGLY.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMOAD4JJjJU

At least test drive one. You will be shocked. I was shocked and ended up buying one. Its alltime 4wd. My needs are different than most on the board because of where I live. I do a fair amount of mountain driving which includes snow. The only "work" I have used it for is hauling a couple of tons of rocks for landscaping, a bedload of sand to build a sandbox for our daughter, and a bedload of woodflooring.

A redesign is due in 2015.
