OT-Shuttle Enveavour, end of an era

I walked outside my apartment today to see the very last space shuttle to ever fly overhead on its way to land at LAX. As I witnessed this moment in history, I recalled the January day in 1986 that, while in studyhall, I watched as the Space Shuttle Challenger launched and as they were given the go ahead for full throttle, I watched it fall as a fireball from the sky. I feel truly blessed to have had this opportunity.

There may be some still, but I think most have finally realized the significance. Endeavour was built here, and, like I said, this is history and I think they appreciate that now. They said today it will take two days to get it to the science museum and will be moving at Aabout 2 miles per hour. it is definitely going to be a sight to see, secondly only to seeing it fly in on the 747.

Man, I'll never forget those words:

"Roger, go at throttle up"

and

"Obviously, we have a major malfunction"

How far is the Science Museum from LAX? And what route will it take? Probably going to be some major freeway shutdowns.

Sad thing about it is that there was an engineer at Morton Theokol screaming that it would happen. Only he thought it would explode on the launch pad.

It would have also probably made it if it didn't hit hard turbulence on the way up that finished off that seal.

I remember sitting at my desk in third grade watching it and the teachers didn't know what to say. They eventually just cut off the TV and it was back to math class.

I wish I would've known that this was happening....

I was sitting on my couch Tuesday morning when it flew around Houston. I heard a plane flying un-Godly close to my house, but before I could get up and check it out, the noise was diminishing and I just chalked it up to a plane taking a different route to Houston Hobby.

Ten minutes I later I see a million facebook posts about the shuttle and realized that the noise I heard was clearly the shuttle doing its victory lap. I'm a moron.

It is very pathetic that the City of Houston did not get one of the shuttles. Just for that alone is enough to vote for the other guy.

He was celebrating with his friends about a minute into the flight.

What was really pathetic is that one of the guys who was on the Rogers Commission stated that the engineers didn't do enough to stop the launch and were ineffective at presenting their case. No, it was management unwilling to listen to the people who actually knew how the damn things worked and thought they had a failproof system.

Agree 100%!!!!! What did L.A. have to do with the space program??

Oh, I guess Hollywood making Armageddon counts for their space contribution!!!

Maybe they could argue for Edwards AFB.

Students from Senatobia H. S. venture class named the Endeavor. They won out over other schools in the competition. So it has Miss. ties, Pretty neat.

I agree, and I'm in Huntsville (perhaps one has to appreciate how parochial the NASA centers are to understand the statement).

But I really can't understand why one went to New York City.

I wrote a paper for school on that. Lot of engineers stayed home because they knew it was going to blow up. Nobody would listen to them.

I was driving across the desert one morning from Lancaster, which is near Palmdale, going to work at a test range on Edwards. The sun was just coming up and I was driving east. We tested early to stay away from the winds of later in the day. I saw something on the horizon that grew larger and larger, and when it was closer I could tell that it was the Atlantis, replacement for Challenger, that was built and Palmdale taking off and was being ferried to KSC. That was a beautiful sight.

Here it is flying over Sacramento this morning. Sorry the photo is not that great; it's the best I could do with my crappy company camera.

Pretty sure Endeavour was built as the replacement for Challenger.

Pasadena. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
I'm assuming they were involved somehow.

It is 12 miles and they are going to begin moving it on the night of the 12th on the 405 from LAX to Inglewood. On the 13th they are having a "Launch" ceremony at Inglewood city hall followed by a parade carrying it to the Exposition Park at CSC> It is only going to be moving at about 2 mph and will take all day.
