What I like about this post is all the details!
Southwest was giving away for free what other airlines were charging for (checked bags.) They will no longer be doing this for free.

I read somewhere a while back that they are also changing their wildly chaotic boarding routine to a model like everyone else uses.

I don't fly Southwest much, but the last experience I had, I think them trying to become average would be worthwhile stretch goal for them.
Yeah. Southwest ain't what it once was and hasn't been for a long time. Just another airline, only with a lot fewer convenient route options because they don't use a hub and spoke system like other airlines and a jacked up seat assignment and boarding process (that they're finally eliminating).

This does seem like an odd move. The free checked bag is the only reason I choose them over any other airline if flight schedules are roughly equivalent. Not because I usually check bags, but because I feel like it helps speed up the boarding process because people don’t try to carry on massive bags.
Boarding is an unnecessary pain in the *** because of too many people trying to carry on bags. I can believe checked bags should cost more than a carry on because there is an extra cost to handling, and some risk of liability, but how much time is lost because of gate checking bags and it taking forever to get loaded because there are too many people trying to cram carryons into too little space. There should be a cost to carry on also to balance out. I would think a ten to twenty dollar difference is more than sufficient to cover the cost and liability of checked bags and not so big as to get everybody trying to take as big of a carry on as possible.

People taking an inordinate amount of time to stow / get carry on bags is only slight less aggravating than people who hold up a convenience store line buying ******* lottery tickets.

I never found it chaotic. People are just too dumb to know how to read and count, I guess.

It slows everything down bc people wander around looking for the best seat. Then they get to the back and realize everything is a middle and have to come back up. Cant wait to see it go.

They should be checking bags for free and charging people to carry on. And yeah, boarding is ridiculous. I just wait till almost everyone else has boarded and walk on the plane.

It's worth the $25 to me to get a window seat. I pay that to upgrade to A every time on SWA.

What always gets me, and I'm assuming other airlines do this now too, is the number of "special" people who get to board first, even before us "priority" guests. First it was only old people in wheelchairs, now it's those people plus fatties (but somehow never me), families with kids, anyone with long hair, lesbians with glasses, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, asskickers, shitkickers and Methodists.

I think most of the people I see in airports should be banished to riding buses.

Enshittification courtesy of private equity strikes again. Southwest used to really give you a decent, no-frills travel experience that was almost always less expensive than American/delta etc. Now it's just another airline and will be within $25 of the same price, and routinely more.

I don't care what priority class I'm in, I'm boarding last. Screw sitting on a crowded airplane for 1/2 hour longer than I have to.

I have first hand experience w/ SW and "fatties". I had an aisle seat, and here he comes waddling down the aisle w/ his side guts unable to fit between seats so he was squeezing through and moving every seat he passed on the way down the aisle. I had that feeling he was zeroing in on the middle seat next to me and yep he was, and it was the most miserable flight I have ever been on. He was a loud mouth breather and a heavy breather too. He kind of sounded like Ron Polk on the radio broadcast except louder. His bulky arms naturally pushed me and the passenger in the window seat away from his broad torso and his previously mentioned side guts hung over the arm rests into our seats also. He spilled a cup of coffee all over during the flight. He couldn't get out of the seat when we got to Chicago (from Phoenix) and had to get a flight attendant to pull him up (I refused to help that fat 17er do anything) I wrote a letter to SWA the next morning detailing everything that happened. W/in days I got a phone call with a personal apology and a letter a few days after that w/ 2 free tickets to anywhere I wanted to go w/ 2 books of those free drink tickets they were giving out at the time also. The person on the phone told me that SW had "failed" me 3 times that day. They "should have noticed that he was a 'person of size' when he scanned his ticket at the terminal door, when he boarded the aircraft, and when they had to give him the extra long seat belt extension so he could buckle in" (which the attendant also had to help him with because again I refused)
That's the only bad experience I've ever had w/ them but it was a doozie. I felt like they made up for it in the long run though.

Yep, unless I’m in FC and that ain’t very often - hard to get upgraded these days, and I’m sure not paying up front for FC or Comfort seating, I’m waiting until the last minute to board.

I’d pay to carry on the bag. Not having to go to baggage claim and run the risk of losing my luggage. I have never understood why the more convenient option is the free one. I don’t care how long a trip I’m going on, I’m somehow fitting my stuff in a carry on.

I actively despise having to carry around my luggage, plus baggage claim is usually convenient to whatever ground transport your headed towards. I've also been lucky and never had any kind of problem with checked bags; that would very likely skew my perception.

Southwest hasn't been the same since they got rid of the backwards seats.

Went on a guys' trip out of Texas once, and the 6 of us filled up a party row. (3 Backwards seats facing 3 other seats). We had a blast, and I got to know the stewardess, err, flight attendant, pretty well before we landed.

I ordered a Heineken, but they were out...so she brought me some other beer for free. She offered me a second beer and I asked for another Heineken....she laughed, and then she brought me another free beer. Fun flight.

Same here. I see people struggling with their luggage in airports all the time (well, what little I fly). I feel sorry for those people. It looks awful. Worth every penny to check the bag.

I don't like sitting that long either, especially when it's hot (which is most of the time on the plane with little to no air)... but it's a trade off for me not to be in the claustrophobic middle seat. I like to lean on the window and sleep, and you have nowhere to go in the middle. Then you have someone on both sides of you fighting for the armrest... no thank you.

Also you can get really lucky (rarely anymore, I admit) but there are those beautiful occasions when the flight isn't full and your middle seat stays empty. Come on, that's pretty good. And if you went in early and got the exit row AND a vacant middle seat -- you've hit the ultra rare double jackpot -- well it's just the closest thing this side of heaven.

But wait a minute - never mind, it's not that great. You don't need to do it. You and everyone else should keep waiting in the terminal. That's a much better plan for you.

Yeah, very rare, but it's awesome when that middle seat stays empty. My best empty middle seat story. Was flying from Raleigh to Atlanta on my way home. Boarded late and middle seat was empty. Last empty seat on the plane. Right before they closed the door, I see a fairly big guy come in and walk down the isle. Sure enough it's his seat. Turns out he was the sports reporter that got fired from the Columbus paper for making negative comments about Lafayette LA when we were in the regional there. We had a really good conversation about State athletics, and shared a big laugh over the "We don't talk about injuries" press conference with Mullen. Turns out he was really hoping when Dan walked out he was finished, and then he walked back in and talked about injuries.

I fly SWA a lot.. average 80 legs a year.. and I’m going to miss open seating. A-List Preferred is where it’s at.

All of us who fly weekly for work will tell you, it’s not about how long it takes to get on that b1tch. It’s about how long it takes to GET OFF.

Aisle seat on row 3 is my usual spot cause that’s where the overhead bins start accommodating a carry-on on the 737.

Just let me on first.. I don’t care what the hell the rest of you do to get a seat.

Here’s potentially the worst part:

“the company will design new carry-on size guides so customers can see if their luggage fits as a carry on”

Several in my company have said we will revolt and no longer book Southwest if they become stringent regarding carry-on sizes. I mean… have you ever tried to put your carry on in one of those sizers at the airport?

If you haven’t, I’ll save you the trouble.. yours probably won’t fit. My usual bag won’t and I’m not downsizing to one that will. I’ll just swap my life to Delta or American.

Early boarding has definitely gotten much more overcrowded than it used to be. I won't do Southwest any longer because of no assigned seats, but would consider them again, once they start assignment.

The perfect Southwest loading place is late B. You can then not only have a seat choice that you like, but you can sit next to someone that you choose, not the other way around. A and you get to pick any seat, but you are subjected to whoever decides to sit next you and I attract the wrong people for some reason. C and you have very few choices left, so you may be fighting with someone who is spilling over into your seat with you...

I loved flying southwest in the 90s. I had a road warrior career, out of town every week. At the end of the week, come straight from the plant in my nomex in boarding A, would just walk right up to the gate and sit on the floor. The groans were audible and the cattle call would start more than an hour before the flight. I sat on the front row to get the hell off the plane and get home. I hated being stuck behind what would be the slowest 17er in the world who would also put their overhead bag 8 rows behind them for no apparent reason.

Bring back some $19 and $29 flights!

Definitely don't like how flights on other airlines are now. The number of different "preboard" groups is just ignorant.

I haven’t read most of this thread, but they are now puppets to a hedge fund that came in and bought up stock to stack the SWA board. This is why they’re doing the things they swore they’d never do, including layoffs (15% corporate cut a couple weeks ago).

Sorry if Germans.
