I'm coming up this weekend for baseball and the last couple of times I've come to town I couldn't get from 25 to downtown on old 82 without being detoured. Just curious if it's still all messed up. Thanks.

If you’re talking about Hwy 82 around Gordo and Reform then the answer is yes. At least since 1985 anyway and probably for the foreseeable future. I’d like to know why Alabama buys the land, does all the infrastructure, builds the roadbeds, and in some cases even builds the bridges and then paves one side of the road and just walks away.

I am in no way defending ALDOT in any fashion, but years ago they adopted a policy for NEW roads: Build all the slopes, drainage, culverts, bridges, then get the sub-grade and base compacted and let it sit. A year’s cycle of hot/cold, dry/wet helps expose problem spots in the subgrade to fix before paving begins.

It seems the policy for West Alabama is a decade or two hot/cold. dry/wet will help expose even more. **

Does seem like it's been sitting there awhile but I can deal with what little is left. That old 2 lane run was torture.

In some cases, you’re right.
The West AL highway project Governor MeeMaw promised would be done before her term is up is about to lose funding to I65 widening. This, after millions in right-away have been purchased with businesses and homes demolished/relocated. What a cluster.

Yes, 182 is under construction. Right now they’re just west of Henderson Ward Stewart and it’s closed entirely.
It has been down to one way, eastbound, but as of right now it’s closed

Hwy 78 (I-22) from the MS line to Birmingham stayed under construction for 30 years.

And let’s not even mention Hwy 45 from the line to Mobile.

Yeah. I think it’s about 7 miles of two lane now between Starkville and Tuscaloosa. It used to be a tough ride before they got where they are now.

ALDOT must use a different funding formula or something. It is crazy how long projects take them compared to MDOT. After Katrina ALDOT closed the rest area on I-10 at the MS line to re-do it. The bridge that MDOT re-built from Ocean Springs to Biloxi was finished about 2-years before ALDOT finished that rest area. Blew my mind...

Interesting tidbit on the WAH in your other post. I'm actually working on that project so that should be interesting because not only has ROW been acquired, but some utilities have already been relocated.
