I am getting a minor in math with my engineering degree. Would i be able to teach math classes at a private school with just a minor?

with that degree if you are willing to work for very little. You should contact the MAIS (former MPSA). <div>
</div><div>You could possibly get a public school teaching certificate through the alternate route. (*I did that in the 90s in social studies.) It means you would have to take some education classes over a certain amount of time and take a qualification test. Contact the MS Dept of Education or a school district in which you might be interested.</div><div>

If you want to teach in public schools at least. I think private schools might be different. My wife had to take classes every month for a few months to get her alternative teaching license, because she didn't have a degree in education. However, she wanted to teach elementary school, and it may be easier to qualify to teach older students.

Private school may be different. They have different regulations, and more leeway in their hiring practices.

Where do you want to teach? Rural? urban? rich? poor? public? private?

That is one of the reason's the education system is so <17>'ed up....you can have a degree in mathmatics or english or whatever, but you cann't teach in public school because you don't have some ******** education courses. Don't know about Miss, but in Ala the teacher's union is definitely in control.A degree in a specific subject is far superior that an "education" degree (plus being much more difficult).</p>

I was in Orlando two weeks ago on vacation with the family. I was wearing a Miss State T-Shirt. One of the ticket collectors saw me and walked up to me and said that he graduated from Miss State with a engineering degree. He told me that finding a job was very tough and he was doing what he had to do to make it. It is my understanding that you can take a test and be able to teach while getting certified. Also if you are a Veteran the VA has a program run by the State of Miss that helps get you qualified to teach. To you advantage, you are a male and male teachers are very desired in many school district due to the kids being horrible. I have a history degree but teaching was a option. I went into another direction. My temperament would not allow me to teach. I would have jerked someone back bone out their ***.

You'll be able to teach in both public/privateIF you have 18 hours in a subject area. Both associations will push you through emergency/alternative certification. Get your Mississippi teaching certificate if you can. MAIS accepts that.

I've heard they've tried to clean up the rules, but in my day i had the departmental sign-off on the minor, but the administration tried to block it for no real reason. I had to pull the lawsuit card.

As an engineer, you may have to take more math for the minor than those with a different major.

Its now 21 hours for public schools. Having a "minor" has nothing to do with it. If you have 21 hours of collegiate math classes, you can get certified to teach math.

I agree with AA, get your public school license and the private school will be taken care of.

I would think that most engineers would be able to teach. Including my master's (in civil) I have 27 hours of math I believe. With the five calculus courses (cal1-4, diff. eq.) required and a stats class most are pretty close to the 21hrs. I'm glad this thread happened because I almost stayed another semester to be able to fit linear algebra in which was the only class I lacked for a minor. Looks like I wouldn't need it anyway.

which was 25 years ago......

You still have to pass the subject area NTE (if they have one) and pass the general NTE within a year or two of getting your emergency certificate.

Not necessarily...but if you have 18or 21 or even 27 hours of a subject, you should be able to pass the exam. And once you haveone certification, you can add multiple subjects afterwards.
