don't bother, if it's with the Corp of Engineering then by all means jump at it. Vicksburg has lots of history and charm. Lots of hilly streets and bluffs. And you have the ****** from Mound and Tahloolah right across the river.

There are job opportunities in Vicksburg? There is no lowdown. There are about 10 main streets from which you can get to anything, 5 neighborhoods worth living in, 2 restaurants worth eating at, and one great national park. Otherwise, not much to see, not much to do, but you won't have to watch TV to get your fill of soap opera.

I grew up there and still have family there. Nice downtown with very very affordable housing, particularly if you are into older homes. When I was there the public schools were really good, not sure if they still are but I have not heard otherwise. It's located so that it's easy to get to Jackson and the Airport in less than an hour, close to hunting in the Delta, not a bad drive to New Orleans for Mardi Gras and weekends. It's even a reasonable drive to Dallas or Atlanta.

Vicksburg Country Club is an ok golf course, but Black Bear over in Delhi is great and not a long drive (45 min). Lake Bruin is a favorite weekend spot for Vicksburgers,a lot of folks have lake houses there and it's notthat expensive to get a spot if your into fishing and skiing.

You can do a whole lot worse in Mississippi. If you got an offer at Waterways Experiment Station then you'd be set assuming you are GS12 or higher. You can live large in V'burg on that kind of money.

No movie theatre. No bowling alley. Nothing to do. Hardly anywhere to eat. 90% of the people who work in positions dealing with the public have pissy attitudes.

That said, the county schools are decent, and there are a lot of good people here and steady government jobs.

What else do you need to know, take the job and move now.

Good place if you are married and have kids or if you are Dawgbreeze's age. If you are single and/or like a nightlife, then HELL No...
Schools aren't bad if live in right area, even though most send their kids to St, Francis.
The good thing is that you are close Jackson for restaurants and nightlife. The Clear Creek recreational area just missed out on the 2012 Olympics. Bars stay open 24/7 due to resort status, all two of them. Rusty's Riverfront grill, Walnut Hills and the VCC restaurant are the only good places to eat besides the Casa. Then you have the Casinos for a little gaming. Lot's of outdoor activities if you like to hunt and fish. Plenty of good people left in the River City.

There are tons of outdoor type activities, expecially if you have kids. If you are young and a recent graduate you'll be driving to Jackson to socialize with ladies most likely. But that's only like 30 minutes. For Atlanta that's a short commute.

The restaurant scene has taken a hit in the last few years. There are still a few good restaurants though. Rusty's is good. I miss 'top of the river' real bad, and it's been gone nearly 20 years. Best Catfish ever and best atmosphere on hte bluff overlooking the river.

If you are a sociable person you should be able to find people who share your interests. If not, you'll be bored out of your mind. Anyone who was taking a job here without living here before, I'd recommend rent for 6 months to a year. Find out if you like it. If you don't, but you like the job, Clinton is an easy commute and plenty of people drive from Madison and Rankin counties.

As for schools, Vicksburg High isn't great but there are worse. I'm not really familiar with Warren Central but it definitely has a better reputation than VHS. Neither of them are on the same level as your better public schools in the metro. St. Al seems to be pretty good aside from pumping out message board heroes like crazy.

Hunting is good, once you meet some hunters. Delta is straight north. Dallas 5-6 hours west, New Orleans, Natchez, Red Stick directly south. Jackson (shopping) is 45 minutes east. They have a Krystal (Meridian doesn't). If you get to the point where you can run the loop in the National park without stopping you will be onebad mother!

HS Football - Warren Central and the Gators! At times, both have been pretty good.

There are several decent Homebody neighborhoods there.

Been here just over a year. Got a job offer and couldn't resist the good deal they gave me. Landings Apartments, Park Residence, The Crossings, and the Magnolia Commons are all nice apartments. I prefer the Landings because it's got a lake if you are in to fishing. Really good local Restaurants. (ok decent restaurants). Unless you are big into casinos night life is better inJackson. Upper End is good in Vickburg. The Lounge at the Beechwood is good for MNF watching. Good county schools here. A lot more younger ladies in the Jackson and Clinton are which isn't that far away.I've enjoyed my time here so far. The town can be dead at times, but like I said the night life is in Jackson. Lots of Bulldogs down here too.

I take it you have never been to eat at a real restaurant. There is no fine dining in Vicksburg, none...

I lived in Vicksburg for over 6 years after finishing school. I still work there. I moved to Clinton when I got married last year. In all my time in Vicksburg, I've never heard anyone praise the town for its eating options.

I actually plan on moving to clinton eventually but with gas going back up, I will live with it for now. Also, Define good restaurants. Isn't good restaurant relative to the eater anyway? I think Toneys, Walnuts Hills, Rocca, and Rustys all have pretty good food. I guess it depends on what you're in to.

Roca's is good, I prefer Rusty's. If you have a giant slice or draw off the tee, have we got the golf course for you! If the river level is right Vicksburg has beaches too. It's funny growing up in Vicksburg then moving to a bigger city makes you realize Jackson is not very far at all.

I remember riding in the car to Jackson as a kid and thinking it was the longest drive ever.

Is the only golf course you can select which fairway you want to go down and not add any extra strokes!
