God rest his soul now that he's joined all of his shipmates.

Lou Conter, last survivor of USS Arizona from Pearl Harbor attack, dies at 102
Was just at Pearl Harbor 2 weeks ago. The Arizona Memorial was powerful. The most moving part was in the Shrine Room. Not just the names on the large wall (those that died in the attack), but the smaller walls on each side. These are the names of Arizona sailors who survived, but when they eventually died, asked for their remains to be brought down to the ship so they could be with their brothers forever.

What a Naval career this man had, the Navy's first SERE Officer training navy pilots how to survive if shot down.
His honor to duty and Country should be an inspiration to all.
I will be interested to hear when the keel will be layed down for the USS Louis Conter.

Wow, that's very honorable and something I haven't heard of until you mentioned it. As an aside, you might want to edit your post as I was wondering why they would call it a Shine Room when I started reading your respone.

Yikes. Just fixed that typo. I didn’t know about that either. There was a plaque that describes the significance of those smaller walls. Very moving.

When I visited the Arizona memorial, a very old Japanese man was wheeled in to the section where all the names are listed…everyone was asked to leave the room so he and his care taker could have some privacy. The word was he was a survivor of the attack…I’m not huge on memorials, but that event and the Arizona site were powerful.

RIP Lou Conter
America just lost another hero
>“The 2,403 men that died are the heroes. And we’ve got to honor them ahead of everybody else. And I’ve said that every time, and I think it should be stressed,” Conter told The Associated Press in a 2022 interview at his California home.<
