I became a Tiger fan the day he came from behind to win his third straight amateur title.

Phil Mickelson won on the same day on the PGA Tour. The Tiger/Scott U.S. amateur final drew better ratings.

The next spring (1997) my father died on April 7th and was buried on the 10th. Tiger shot a 40 on the front nine at Augusta that day then blitzed the field to finish -18.

Watching Tiger got me through that weekend and gave me something to smile about. I never stopped watching until he stopped playing.

That being said, I don't think he's a very nice guy. Definitely was a fan of his game, but not the man.

Folks can quibble on here and give their opinions but the only way to determine which athlete has had the biggest fall from grace is to look at numerical stats. Which athlete made the most from endorsement deals (which signify overall popularity) and then which athlete lost the most money due to loss of those deals (which signifies a total loss of popularity)? My guess is that Tiger would prevail in this debate but gotta throw Pete Rose out there as well.....

Contrary to popular opinion, PED's aren't going to turn a bad athlete into a great one. The work is still going to be the reason for the success. It gives them a slight edge due to sheer strength, but if they're all doing it, isn't it the same thing, just a better product?

Also, when will the PED NFL scandal break? I bet it's tough to find one of those players that's clean. The NFL has been allowing it for decades.

NBA hasn't had a scandal either. When someone gets busted it was always some kind of "accident."

It's an interesting question. For me it mostly comes down to what we are telling our young athletes it is ok to put in their bodies.

But there can be a fine line between supplements and PEDs, and it's a moving target as well.

I think it would also be a battle. Not trying to argue who would win head to head, just that Tiger did not face the level of competition Jack faced. Keep in mind, Tiger doesn't play today either. Tiger's prime was years ago. The level of competition is great right now on tour, and I enjoy watching golf as much as I have in years, but it was not great 10 to 15 years ago.

That's because he was so much da** better than everyone else. Not hard to figure out. It was a battle for 2nd place. There's never been a period on the pga tour in which the battle was for 2nd best.
Els would be one of the 5 most accomplished golfers of all time if woods had not been around

There's not a single sport in the world in which the players get worse as time goes on. Technology progresses,so do people. Bigger ,stronger ,faster.

Agree. I grew up playing. Followed Jack in his amateur days because I lived near Ohio State.

I walked Augusta several times with Jack. He could nut a 2 iron off the deck with air/spin. Powerful. Out drove everyone (like Tiger).

But Tiger's short game was better. And like Jack he loved 'the moment'. I believe it would be a push.

Aside from Tiger himself and Phil, there isn't much to talk about. The amateurs form back in the day were better than a lot of pro's too. Golf wasn't sought after by some of them due to financial reasons. I would bet it's possible the best golfer in history isn't even a name.

I agree. I was a natural athlete, and rejected PED's. I will admit, especially in baseball, it was tough to hang with some of the users. Their pop was just a bit sub human. But I also admit some of them would spend more time in a gym than most. Some people envision PED users sitting on the coach with a needle and standing up to be Barry Bonds. It doesn't work that way.

I think at minimum major league baseball should have a special section of the Hall for some of those guys. They made a fortune off of their backs, even turning a blind eye, then want to banish them once the media makes it a story. Without those guys in the 90's baseball might not have made it.

I remember watching that too. I have no idea why... I'm assuming he was already getting big, because I just remember ESPN promoting the hell out of it. Or was it ESPN? Remember watching it with my grandparents.
I think they would always show the clip of tiger hitting a golf ball on David Letterman as like a 2 year old. Maybe I'm wrong, been a while.

That was also about the time Happy Gilmore came out as well. Still waiting for part 2.

It would have survived, but not been the same. Mark McGuire, Sammy Sosa and Bonds were all roided the hell out, but it was great for the sport. Bonds head got so big he had to go to the pottery barn to get a straw hat. Compliments to Cedric the Entertainer.

I'm a huge Griffey guy, probably my favorite athlete of all time. I hate admitting that because I'm a huge St. Louis guy, and adore Ozzie, but Griffey has a very special place in my existence. (Seattle Griffey, not Reds Griffey)

Griffey in his prime was hitting toe to toe with those guys. "The race" was an incredible year for baseball. I was in St. louis with my dad when McGuire tied the record. Looking back on how incredible Griffey was to be able to do that was insane.

Had he been on PED's, whoa. I think Griffey is the modern Mick.

You also see today where great pitching beats great hitting ( if everyones natural).

Not as great for marketing the sport, but it is a good product for those who enjoy the way the game was meant to be played.

Dunno, It would be interesting to see everyone on juice though.

1:00 PM PT --We've learned Tiger's girlfriend, Kristin Smith, learned about the arrest while shopping at a Neiman Marcus store in Dallas. Someone called her and, according to several eyewitnesses, "she went crazy" and said "I knew it, I knew it." We're told she began crying, then bought $5k worth of merchandise and left.

In my opinion, the analytics and ing that today's players have at their disposal makes it damn near impossible for one or two guys to separate themselves frm the rest.

We thought Sergio was going to do it. Nope.
We thought Rory would do it, he started to, but there are too many other players that are too good for any ne player to move ahead of the pack.

Yeah, I read that in a later story. First story said 7, which I thought was weird or very problematic. The first story alluded to the fact that he was just over the Fl. limit. Tested at .08 it said.

.08 barely drunk. Used to be .1 but the lawyers wanted to make more money so they
had it changed to .08.
