Folks claiming Tyson was overrated or fought bums his whole career are either really young and never saw him fight or just don't know a lot about boxing to begin with. His era was no less competitive than any other era minus late 60's early 70's with Ali, Frazier, Foreman etc.
Just because he ran through the division didn't mean there weren't good boxers. Marvis Frazier had a great amateur career and only lost professionally to Holmes and Tyson when he got beat into retirement. He took the title from Berbick who was the last to beat Ali in '81. Berbick also took champion Holmes all 15 rounds losing a decision. Holmes was maybe washed up when Tyson made really short work of him but he still was a former champ with an impressive resume. Pinklon Thomas had a good run too. Definitely wasn't a slouch. Used his length nicely against Tyson but couldn't stand up to the power once Tyson finally got to him. And folks seem to forget that Tony Tucker was running through the division in his own right. Spinks and Foreman both said no thanks at a mandatory title defense against him and had to vacate. Tyson wasn't skeered though. And don't get me started on the Spinks whoopin. Holy moly. Yeah if you take Tyson out of that era of heavyweights it would have been very competitive and fun to watch. None of them could stand up to his power though. Just because Tyson ran through them with ease doesn't mean they were all bums. Those were some good boxers he was whipping up on. To say he was overrated is just silly. Easily one of the top 5 heavyweights of all time and could have been the GOAT had he been able to keep his head on straight. Unfortunately Cus Stamato was the only one that could harness him. Once he left it was downhill for Tyson.
