Folks claiming Tyson was overrated or fought bums his whole career are either really young and never saw him fight or just don't know a lot about boxing to begin with. His era was no less competitive than any other era minus late 60's early 70's with Ali, Frazier, Foreman etc.
Just because he ran through the division didn't mean there weren't good boxers. Marvis Frazier had a great amateur career and only lost professionally to Holmes and Tyson when he got beat into retirement. He took the title from Berbick who was the last to beat Ali in '81. Berbick also took champion Holmes all 15 rounds losing a decision. Holmes was maybe washed up when Tyson made really short work of him but he still was a former champ with an impressive resume. Pinklon Thomas had a good run too. Definitely wasn't a slouch. Used his length nicely against Tyson but couldn't stand up to the power once Tyson finally got to him. And folks seem to forget that Tony Tucker was running through the division in his own right. Spinks and Foreman both said no thanks at a mandatory title defense against him and had to vacate. Tyson wasn't skeered though. And don't get me started on the Spinks whoopin. Holy moly. Yeah if you take Tyson out of that era of heavyweights it would have been very competitive and fun to watch. None of them could stand up to his power though. Just because Tyson ran through them with ease doesn't mean they were all bums. Those were some good boxers he was whipping up on. To say he was overrated is just silly. Easily one of the top 5 heavyweights of all time and could have been the GOAT had he been able to keep his head on straight. Unfortunately Cus Stamato was the only one that could harness him. Once he left it was downhill for Tyson.

I bet he's addicted to pain killers.

All the surgeries and injuries. You are probably right. Sad. Why does society enjoy tearing down past heroes?

I hate golf and couldn't care less about Tiger but man drugs and alcohol are destroying us. Get clean peoples.

I'm not looking to tear him down at all.....and he's doing a great job of it all by himself.

A "fraud" is someone who pretends to be something he's not. As far as I know, Tiger Woods has never "pretended to be" anything other than the best golfer who ever played the game.

He may be a scum-bag, or a POS, or whatever you want to call him (and on a personal level I generally agree), but . . . Tiger Woods is the best player to ever tee up a golf ball. Period. I'm tempted to say ". . . by far the best player . . .", but I won't in deference to the fact that Nicklaus is and always has been, as one poster said, "a class act." At his best, and I mean at his BEST -- Nicklaus was not as good a player as Tiger was, at or even close to his best.

My first memory of golf on TV was seeing Arnie win his first Masters in 1958, when I was 11 1/2 years old.

When Nicklaus started beating Arnie regularly, he got just a little bit smug for my taste, but not so smug as to detract, overall, from his being a class act. I thought Tiger would win 19 majors or more, but now it's clear that he won't. Of course, a part of Tiger's present physical problems undoubtedly arose from the fact that he started playing at a highly competitive level at such a young age, and continued competing at the highest level without any "break" for 17 years (1991 - 2008). When we talk about "majors", I always try to remember that Tiger won three straight USGA Junior titles, at ages 15, 16, and 17, and won three straight U. S. Amateur Championships, at ages 18, 19, and 20 -- before he ever turned pro ! ! !

I agree that it is a shame that Tiger is such a non-role-model for young kids. But he certainly is not !

A man with that much money could do much better IMO.

****, he banged 1 legged hookers at Denny's. I think he's doing pretty good.

If you were a cop, would you arrest tiger for DUI? I sure as hell would not. I would make a light hearted half jokingly attempt at extorting him, but wouldn't care....unless he said something smart then I'd steal his car if it wasn't a Buick.

I read somewhere (maybe another thread on here) that he offered them golf lessons. Couple lessons, club membership and a cool million, I'm driving him home myself and tucking him in.

Yeah, I read that in a later story. First story said 7, which I thought was weird or very problematic. The first story alluded to the fact that he was just over the Fl. limit. Tested at .08 it said.

It is weird that they waited 4 hours to book him though. Prob had something to do with him refusing to blow but still that's a long time I would think between arrest and being booked.

Clearly, you didn't read his statement. According to Tiger, "alcohol was not involved." Rather, it was "an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications."

0.08...anyone could easily blow that after a few drinks. A big story out of nothing really.

As I previously said, many of us can be arrested for the same crime after coming home from Friday night dinner with the Mrs...

Tiger was and still is the best thing to happen to golf. If Tiger comes back to any single tournament, it will be major headlines and the rating will go through the roof. It's the reason why a good chunk of his endorsements have not dried up.

Hater gonna hate.

With regards to this episode. everyone on this board after a couple of drinks could be stopped and charged with DUI. It's the reality. And most first time offenders will get a slap on the wrist...it's that common.

And Tyson's fall dwarfs Tigers...I mean, Tyson went to jail for rape. For those comparing the two are idiots and probably hate Tiger for other reasons.

Don't let your saltiness about HillDawg losing and being embarrassed on this board bc of it cloud your judgement , like it seems to be doing with your post above :-/

Tiger releases statement:

"I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions," Woods said in the statement. "I want the public to know that alcohol was not involved. What happened was an unexpected reaction to prescribed medications. I didn't realize the mix of medications had affected me so strongly.

"I would like to apologize with all my heart to my family, friends and the fans. I expect more from myself too. I will do everything in my power to ensure this never happens again.

"I fully cooperated with law enforcement, and I would like to personally thank the representatives of the Jupiter Police Department and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's office for their professionalism."

Who said he didn't have a big name?

I said in most boxing decades prior his name wouldn't have been what it was when he boxed. This isn't earth shattering news. Many boxing fans believe Tyson was a paper tiger.

His name was huge during his run, and he still wasn't the best in an average decade.

You think he's the bomb, great. Enjoy that.

I don't think he's the best boxer of all time or anything but he's up there , and in his prime he absolutely was one of the best.

You seem to know at least a little about sports (maybe not ?) so I'm a bit perplexed as to your reasoning behind all this.

Although I do agree that Tigers fall from grace was mightier than Tysons. Tiger was like HUGE for awhile there. Like Michael jordon huge (not on the same level obviously, but yeah)

You think he (Tyson) kinda sucks, great. Enjoy that.

:)

I just think he benefited from a down sport and then was shown to be not as great as previously thought. I think In former decades his name would have been much weaker.

If you look at his top 5 wins, it's an absolute joke. To put his name at the top with other boxing greats is a joke imo.

Not putting him at least near the top is a joke, imo. You must not be that* familiar with boxing .

Surely you jest ?

One poster said, "Tiger is a young man"..Tiger is 41 years old..at what age does a grown man stop being a "young man." This jackass is not even man enough to admit fault. He is saying alcohol was not involved. A reaction to prescript meds. This guy will never win another golf tournament let alone 4 majors to equal Jack..not ever going to happen..I will never condone drinking and driving. Not from a celeb or any average everyday idiot..

It's pretty well known.
There were payments by him to a doctor that was convicted of selling peds.

Tiger also went from a 25 year old string bean, to a 26 year old muscle bound dude, pretty much overnight.

Get your head out of his ***, and use your brain. He was cheating!

"Overnight" lol

Man, exaggerate much?

Your entire argument is flawed. You can tell you're being backed into a corner bc of your lashing out and personal insults.

Live and let live man (;

LOL, so he was treated by a doctor, like thousands of other athletes, that was found to have supplied PED's to some athletes, so that means he had to be taking them too… .and I'm the one that has to extract my head from something?

I'm not a groupie, but I'm also not someone that throws around accusations without proof. If you want to do that then have at it hoss.

That's just his style, I wouldn't take much of what he says seriously lol

Johnny miller once said on tv that tiger could bench 450 pounds.
If that is true then he definitely was on roids or HGH. I used to lift quite a bit and never took anything other than creatine and getting to 315 on my bench was a lot of work. To get to 450 you are taking serious stuff at Tigers weight and build. No way he did it without taking the good stuff.

When Tyson fought, there were huge parties at homes, apartment complexes, bars, and whatever else, just to see his match on pay per view. And there were those matches where his devastating right hand punch would knock a challenger out midway thru the first round and the fight was over in seconds. Yet, people will say that it was the best money paid for in terms of seeing excitement and watching Tyson literally knock a man into tomorrow.

From my point of view, Tyson by far was the more known athlete or star of their times. Just an opinion.
