75% of my back yard is bermuda grass sod. For some reason, the builder only sodded it to a certain point. The left over 25% is just pasture grass (looks like bayhaila sp?) It grows so much faster than the Bermuda of course. My question is what is the best way to get bermuda growing there? Do I need to wait until next spring to do this or can I do it now? Do I need to kill the bayhaila first and then spread the bermuda seed?

Roundup the bahia grass, till it up, then go overseed with bermuda. And water it regularly.

What if your entire front yard is bahia?

Also... New backyard is shady with a mix between good dirt and red dirt. What should be plant there?

Well, uh, do you like the bahia grass?

Lots of grasses tolerate shade and red clay. Depends on how much money you got.

If you til it up you better remove some of the dirt and bring in new top soil. Even if you spray roundup you may have some that will live and invade your bermuda.

I would also lay sod instead of seed.

You can buy bermuda seed that is supposed to be shade tolerant. I haven't tried it so can't confirm. Zoysia may be a better option for the back yard depending on how much shade you're talking.

For the front yard I'd follow the above instructions unless you have a strict HOA. Wait 7 days after applying roundup to seed with fertilizer. Then water the 17 out of it daily.

I'm no expert

But if 75% of your yard is nice Bermuda, wouldn't plugging grass from it be a better option that seeding?

I've never had good luck with seeds.

Hate it. Moved to a HOA neighboor hood (all with 3 acres of land) and all my neighbors are either retired and cut their grass often or pay to have it cut. And i have a push mower.

Whatever you do is going to be costly if you are talking 3 acres. I'd over-seed with centipede honestly, buy a riding mower, and mow at 1.5". And where do you live, by the way?

Be advised that bahia is hard to kill. Might just live with it. Maybe just do something different in your immediate back yard if you like walking on softer grass.

I've never had that happen to me, but I've heard alot of people say that. Usually if you roundup it good, you can use those dead plants as good mulched up soil. But yeah sod is great just more expensive.

These are only my opinions based on what I've done, so I don't want it to sound like I'm trying to argue or anything, but I've never done well plugging the grass in, it always dies on me. If I till it up nice, and bury the seeds per the direction, I usually do pretty well.

Live close to Meridian. My side of the road is wooded and i only have about 1.5 acres to cut. but it looks like crap when all the other neighbors especially across the road have huge yards that are always kept cut. Spots of the yard stay too wet after rain for a riding mower plus a creek that i can get most of with a push mower.

Not sure if relevant or not, but my front yard was St. Augustine, and backyard was Bermuda. The St. Augustine is kicking the bermuda's ***. Now about 50% of the backyard is St. Augustine, and I'm pretty happy about it, as I don't like bermuda much. The one spot that bermuda seems to have a stronghold on I'm going to kill, till, water til it sprouts again, then kill and till again. Then throw some Augustine in there. I don't know if St. Augustine is good in your area, but it does great in the freaking desert I live in. It's been 108 already and my grass is still green, and I haven't even turned on my sprinkler system this year.

The Bahia will be very hard to kill. Round-Up x4 will get you started. How many square feet do you have to do? if small you may want to sod it if not seed will be your other option. Water lightly but frequently, do not let the seed dry out once you get it wet.

Not real sure, it was there when I bought the house. This was taken a week ago, after a few months of high 90s and 100 degree weather. I like it, reminds me of the "real" grass I grew up with in NC.

I think 1 pallet of sod will cover everything I need. How much does a pallet usually run?

First where are you located? How much the sod cost will depend on that. You can estimate on between $1.50 to $2.00 per square foot. I may be low on the pricing I don't normally buy small quantities. What ever you do before you put the grass down put down a slow release fertilizer first, I repeat (SLOW RELEASE) not ammonium nitrate, the grass will establish much faster if you do this first.
