My washing machine is putting grease spots on the clothes and the wife is pissed. My internet research indicates that I may as well go ahead and junk it and get another. I am cheap so I have been checking craigslist and doing some research. I thought I might splurge and buy a front loader but I keep reading that they smell really musty due to the rubber seal around the front door holding water.
Anyone got any opinions on front load vs the old top load?
Also anyone got any recommendations on where to get one in the Tupelo area before I jump on craigslist

Do NOT buy a front load.

I spent a fortune on one, supposedly the best on the market at the time. (GE I think) They suck! My wife was hating it the 1st week. Think about this, when the load gets unbalanced and you turn it off to sort the wet clothes out, what do they do? Yep, they all fall to the bottom in a pile!! Unbalanced again. I changed the door gasket twice in the 1st year for about $100 each time. That's the last front load we'll ever have. She hates loading and unloading it too. It is a horrible design.

I have a HE top loader and get the musty smells too. My advice is to buy the cheap washer and ***** about the small loads it washes. At least you're clothes won't smell.

Don't buy a front loader. My parents got the high end Samsung ones and they hate them. Get a regular top loader. The high efficiency ones save you about 10 cents a month in water and don't clean clothes near as well. Yet they cost triple what a regular washer and dryer costs

Front loaders are fine but buy a whirlpool. All front loaders have a clean cycle where you run nothing but bleach through them on a certain cycle about once a month. Other than that, leave the door cracked when you are not using them and you will be fine. Samsung should stick to TV's and GE is having other appliance manufacturers make their washing machines, just like maytag.

By a whirlpool duet and have a happy wife. She can fit damn near twice as many clothes in as she normally does and they work perfectly. They also save on water and are much much easier on the clothes that you wash than a top loader with an agitator.

They're terrible. Relatives have one and hate it. Stinks, requires regular cleaning and always have to leave door open. I was considering getting one before my old one went out. After hearing them, couldnt give me one. I figure they'll be obsolete in another 10 years. My regular machine requires no cleaning, works like a charm and clothes don't smell like goat spit.

Don't get a front loader! We have a GE and had the door gasket replaced once under warranty because it was black with mold. We did all the preventative measures, too. Our next will definitely be a top loader.

Same experience. Perfect washer. Just leave the door cracked so it can air dry. We've had ours for 10 years and the only problem was the water pump needed replacing last year. I did it for the cost of the pump. remove the front kick panel, remove hoses, one or two screws, put the new one on. 10 mins max.

We just bought a new washer/dryer. With that said I have a good friend that doe

does appliance repair and he told me just as you said, "DO NOT BUY A FRONT LOADER OF ANY BRAND". Bought a GE top loader from Sears. Sometimes the newest technology is not the best technology.

i dont know where they sell these and the stacked units dont exactly work well for large families, but we bought one at a garage sale for 35 bucks and it was practically brand new. best $35 i ever spent. i have it in a rental property and they are really tough. these are the kind they have in college apt complexes....so you know they are durable. having one make me appreciate them for their simplicity and durability.

100% agree. We bought a Whirlpool Duet (front loader) a couple years ago and have had no issues. We do a bleach load every week (towels and my t-shirts) and do the clean cycle with Affresh when it "tells" us too. And like you stated, we leave the door open after the last load of the week until the next morning, and haven't had any issues with mildew, etc. Another great feature of ours is that it has a detergent reservoir that we only have to fill every couple of weeks. And you can fit tons of clothes in it with no issues.

My wife loves it...

if you like spending more money than you need to.

if you like your clothes less clean than they could be. if you like saving water bc it's so expensive.** then buy a front loader.

there's a reason top loaders are making a come back. we just upgraded to a top loader and sold our front loaders on CL for $500 and nearly broke even. my clothes smell clean for the first time in 5-6 years.

we'll never go back.

Agreed on the duet as well.

I bought a Duet washer/dryer set off craigslist for next to nothing. The dude selling it said he hated the washer and that it stunk all the time. I got it cheap so I bought it anyway, and being a tinkerer I started trying to find the problem.

It did stink bad, but I pulled the front panel off the bottom, and there was a drain plug with a cap on it near the floor. I pulled the cap off, and there was a little mesh filter in front of the drain. The filter had caught two batteries, some children's toys, band-aids, toothpicks, and a fuckload of lint, which were all covered with black slimy ****. I cleaned it and it fixed the stank. The washer could not drain out its own dirty water because the drain filter was clogged.

Bottom line:

1. Get a whirlpool duet set.
2. Don't be a tard and leave batteries and **** in your pockets. The stank is a real thing, but it is caused by the user. Always.
3. Run the bleach cycle ("clean washer") once a month, and always leave the door open when you are not using it.
4. If this sounds like a lot of work just to own a washer, then get a top loader. Front loaders aren't perfect and need a bit of babying, but there are definite benefits. My favorite part is that the spin cycle runs much faster since it spins on a horizontal axis, and your clothes are damn near dry before you put them in the dryer, so the dryer doesn't run as long.

Good luck

So they have dryers now that are supposed to perform a dry clean function. As in you can do your own dry cleaning instead of taking clothes to the cleaners. Now if they have a dryer that irons clothes, I'm in.

1) Buy a top-loader (fronts are getting more reliable though)
2) If you're looking for dependability first...get a SpeedQueen. You won't find a more reliable, long-lasting washer

3) If you're looking for pretty solid dependability and super high tech-look at Samsung or Whirlpool

4) Stay away from Home Depot washers.

Sidebar: we have a SpeedQueen that was built during the Reagan admin and its still doing fine. Just bought a SpeedQueen dryer.

My wife convinced me to buy a high$$$ Fisher Paykel computer that washes and dries clothes. The damn thing would do everything except answer the door and make coffee.

But when it crapped out (and it did routinely)... $$$$.

Buy cheap low-tech. When it craps out throw it away and buy another one.

I bought my first HE washer recently. It is a top loader.

I hate HE (High Efficiency). For normal loads, its OK. If you have sweaty clothes in there, the whole load will come out smelly. I have to wash stuff twice or make sure to select heavy duty & extra rinse cycle and its mostly OK. Too much hastle.

I wish I would have skipped all the electronic gadget ****, walked to the back of the store, and got a old school washer & dryer with knobs (except dryness sensors are a must have...they dry clothes until they are done instead of drying until a timer goes off).

From someone in the appliance repair business.

Get a top load, that lets you change the load size....water temp... and time of wash cycle. Everything else is something to go wrong and cost you money.

Buy a Whirlpool, or GE. Also note that Roper (sold at Lowe's) is made by Whirlpool, it's one of the best buys out there. Same transmission and major parts as Whirlpool at a cheaper price. Hey, it's a washing machine, not a damn piece of art. Buy the cheap one and spend the rest on beer.

The musty smell is pretty easy to avoid...don't close the door when you're done with laundry. The gasket area can dry, and it won't mold. Or if they are somewhere you don't want to leave the door open, get a rag and dry the water at the bottom of the seal.

The unbalanced thing I had a problem with on the final spin (high high rpm). I adjusted the feet on the bottom during that cycle and haven't had a problem since.

That being said, they were expensive, use special detergent (although it's pretty common now), and take longer than an old top load. I like mine for the idiot proof digital controls. Put in clothes, soap in the drawer, press play.
