SPC has a moderate risk area, which means possibly numerous tornadoes of medium to strong strength are possible. Things should get going here in a few hours, and areas from Starkville west across the eastern 1/3 ofArkansas, the entire northern half of MS, Memphis and areas east toward Nashville and Huntsvilleare all in or near the moderate risk area. Looks like some linear storms, along with some supercells. Everyone needs to pay attention tonight.

WARNING: The next few sentences will be highly meteorological in nature and may contain verbage that only makes you more confused. This is straight from the SPC and it might help explain this further to some of you. I will try to clean up some ofthe info thatreally doesn't matterto make it a bit easier to read:

things could get pretty bad. Strong tornadoes are a definite possibility. This is highly unusual for January. I'd keep my NOAA weather radio on all night in N. Miss ... I will here in N. Alabama.

This is going to be one that will last into the early morning hours. I'm going to be up most of the night doing homework/watching this thing develop, so I will probably start a thread later on tornadowarnings and cities in the path. If any of you will only have this as a place to stay updated, let me know because I will be up until at least 1 in the morningtracking this.

the NWS is going to get rid of the all-caps they use in their "products"? I know it's a throwback to the teletype days, but those days are long gone. The weather discussions were initially meant to be read only by mets in other offices, and for coordination, etc. And there are many other issues that need addressing too ... not the least of which is formatting ... make the stuff readable!<div>
</div><div>With the advent of the internet, weather sites, and particularly the NWS offices, are readily available to the general public and are very popular. All caps is very hard to read ... and all the really crazy abbreviations are no longer necessary (word length was an issue with teletypes ... it's not with the internet). I understand there was a proposal to use normal wording and type a year or two ago, but I don't know if it was passed or was even acted upon. The government moves very slowly (I can say that because I worked for them for well over 40 years).</div><div>
</div><div>The NWS needs to get with the program.</div>

They, along with most other stations, seem to think that only other NWS stations read their discussions. That just simply isn't true anymore. I find tons of people who just by looking up things on the Internet and reading discussion know about as much asI doabout weather, and I have a degree in meteorology.

I think the NWS and SPC could do one of two things. They can put out two discussions when posting time comes. One for the other meteorologists and one for everyone else. Or they can just put out one product that is detailed, but not as highly concentrated with abbreviations and terms no one but meteorologists know so that everyone can read it. I think they could go either way and make it easier for everyone. These long unreadable discussions are why so many people still don't understand weather. You would be amazed to know how many people didn't know the April 27th outbreak was coming.

The Memphis office does a good job of not abbreviating in the discussion and they try to keep it brief. I read them every day.

You like things in the 350s and 400s if you want severe weather. 500s is just plain nasty.Areas in northern MS, eastern Arkansas and western TN are in for a rough evening.

They are usually really good of keeping it simple and not bogging down the information with useless weather jargin. On days like today when people that might be in the line of fire need to read something to figure out when, what time, and how bad things will be, that is really really important.

or the detailed discussions. The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned. My beef is just to make it readable. All caps is very hard to read. And it's no trouble at all to spell out abbreviations ... even the mets would probably find it easier to read. I realize all professions have their own vernacular (I worked at NASA almost since it's inception, so I'm very familiar with talk of the trade), but being protectively parochial about it is a bit too much. Atmospheric physics is highly technical, but there's no need to make it so cumbersome. I talked to Brian from the Birmingham once when he was here for a meeting about the issue (you may have known him ... he's retired now but with one of the TV stations in B'ham) and about all he could do was shrug.<div>
</div><div>If anybody didn't know the late April storms were coming they had their heads in the sand. It was forecast several days in advance, was all over all the media, and was certainly on all the weather sites. High risks are to be taken very seriously.</div>

seem to be no storms in the entire state. There's a bit of rain near Nashville, and some light stuff south of Huntsville. Earlier, there seemed to be some small cells trying to develop but they never really did anything.<div>
</div><div>Watch out for later though.</div>

for allowing it. There has been a lot of news (sports and non sports) and weather broken on this board. It`s really pretty amazing.

The storms are about to enter into that area where the conditions are really favorable for big tornadoes.

Tornado warnings on three cells right now. Onegoing through Camden, one in front of it about to go through Fordyce, and the other going through Sheridan. Those storms are beginning to go from linear to supercellular, which is not a good thing.

You love severe weather and chasing tornadoes and supercells, but then you think about everyone impacted and it's tough to deal with. There hasn't been much press about the potential for severe weather tonight, and you never know when someone may wander over here and get valuable information on something as potentially dangerous asthe weathermight be tonight. </p>

Really bad news for them. That couplet on radar velocity is nasty looking. That's the storm of the night so far. Radar has pretty consistently strong with it, so there is a chance it has been on the ground for a very long time now. </p>

There are going to be a couple of longer track tornadoes by the end of the night in Arkansas. All of these have stayed together relatively well and haven't been cycling much. That's bad news unfortunately. </p>
