OT: Weequahic HS Unscored Upon Streak

Is Weequahic blowing everyone out 357-0 so far this season a good thing or a bad thing?

Newark Weequahic HS is 7-0 with had outscored their opponents 357-0 so far going into their 8th game. Yes they might give up some points this week to West Side this week because stupid things happen in a Newark City League game. If not, Immaculatta will definitely score points the following week, IMO.

But the question is: is Weequahic blowing everyone out like this is a good thing or a bad thing?

Simply it's a good thing for Weequahic and not so good for the opponents. It's not immoral, poor sportsman's or anything like that. It's a senior laden roster so what is your issue? Are they cheating. Leaving starters in the whole game. I'm sure they didn't pick the entire schedule. It happens sometimes.

Got no issues with them whatsoever. I actually think this becomes a historical thing if they stay unscored all the way through. Or at least until the playoffs.

The reactions that I’ve seen elsewhere from some “fans/alumni” of some high schools up 280 has been hilarious. Ranges from “disgraceful” “unsportsmanlike” and one doof said that the state should look into suspending coaches for running up the score like that.

Wish I knew how to post screenshots onto this board but…

Like I said, I can’t screenshot onto this page. But here’s what Mike Kinney said about Weequahic before their game vs Boonton this past Friday:

“Joe DL No they're not running up scores. They average only 11 passes a game and Shady Marshall averages only 10 carries a game. He has not run the ball 70 times yet this season and is over 1,000 yards. They have scored 234 of their 357 points in the first half and the defense already has scored five TDs. Eleven different guys have scored at least one touchdown - in 6 games! That's not running up the score; that's just playing football against teams that aren't as good as you.”

Of course those fans ignored these observations from the longtime HS reporter who would know what he’s taking about.

Not exactly a top 20 schedule . I kind of have sympathy for most inner city hs football programs. Not many resources and little support.

If anything it speaks to the distribution of talent in NJHS football. As @tico brown points out, the way the scoring happens is very fair. You have to let the kids play football. They just need more talented teams to challenge them. There is something wrong with how the talent/teams/divisions/conferences are formed.

The state rotates their divisions/conferences/schedules every two years. I’m sure they will be slotted in a division with the likes of Cedar Grove, Hasbrouck Heights, Westwood and other top Group 1s for the 2024 and 25 seasons.

Agreed about both. There’s a city Group 5 school whose admin is satisfied with being in the Ivy. And there’s some day care centers with better facilities than this school.

Agreed. Went to see Dear Old Dickinson play Tenafly and Sunday. Our team was dwarfed by the unfamiliar opponent. I loved the rivalries with Ferris, Snyder and other more local teams. Travel is not helping with expenses.

Should be no excuses for Dickinson to be the way they are: borderline Ivy. Should be at least a 500 team if they ever had the support.

The lack of outdoor facilities in Jersey City is shameful as well. Dickinson and Ferris has to share a field at Gateway Field, Lincoln has to share a field at Lincoln Park with Hudson Catholic, and they got lucky when Hudson cancelled their season. Snyder practices at Caven Point but gets kicked off for any soccer or JV/ Freshmen game. Yet no HS football team is allowed on the football field at Berry Lane.

Maybe they should’ve built some athletic fields instead of all of those half empty, 50 story luxury towers all over the city. Or gave land and $81 million for that County Science High School by the Liberty Science Center.

Late 70s DHS practiced and played freshman and JC games at Okly Oval, aka the rock bowl. Shared Roosevelt Stadium which was a dangerous hazard. Current facilities(still mostly Caven Pt) still insufficient but actually used to be worse. Barringer up next as the final of a 6-game season. We played 9 back in the day

It’s supposed to be 10 ( or 8/9 scheduled with playoffs/Consolation Games to make it 10). But as with what’s been going on at DHS, the admin is satisfied with doing the ABSOLUTE minimum for football players while most of HCs there is only there for the check.

At least Caven Point FINALLY have TWO working scoreboards after at least 5 years of one been out of order. Let’s see if the can straighten out the goalposts for their next trick. I’m not even going to ask how old that turf is.

BTW, they already played Barringer and lost opening day. They’re at 5-1 Orange and that might have a running clock before halftime. They finish with 1-5 Paterson Kennedy at Caven. And even that might ugly as well. The Dickinson kids deserve better than what they have.

Okay.. they have to find a way to force the big developers to build them a field somewhere useful... make a deal! That's not right.. the big developers making a fortune they need to take care of city residents with families.. though maybe that's the plan.. stop services to families.. get them to move.. build more apartment blocks for the singles and childless.

Remove teh hill here and build the field right along this road.. if you need fill toward the severe slope down to the railroad tracks and the turnpike spur, you have it in this hill.

As late as in 2010, students at magnet schools without football (University, Scinece, Arts, etc) or at county schools (Newark Tech, South 13th St Tech, etc) could play for a football school and play other sports at the school they’re attending.

These days with their open enrollment, magnet and charter schools, who knows these days.
