Speaking of the District:

I know they demolished the old school building that sat there. What's the timetable to break ground? I think it's a great idea but am hesitant to get excited in the event it turns into another Farrish Street fiasco.

Who made that image? Was it 615 or you? That's probably one of the funnier photoshops that have happened on here.

That and McDade's. I don't even live in Jackson and I shop at McDade's when I'm traveling through. Whole Foods will not change this either.

To be completed by 2020. Coming soon!

It is being done in phases and that is the final phase completion date.

"Construction of Phase I – which will include the hotel, the restaurants, office building, bank, the lofts and possibly one or two other pieces — will take 12-15 months."

WFM is just another grocery store marketing the all natural organic label while still partners with the USDA and Monsanto.

Buy Local or harvest local

I'm about as anti-organic as you can get, but the Whole Foods has a lot more than a grocery store. I work and live right around the corner, and I'm pretty excited about being able to grab a slice of pizza at lunch and a growler at the bar on they way home. I was wondering why the building was so big and it's because it has a lot of small shops an areas in it.

I'm like you on organic but the ready made food is good. The groceries are there to vacuum your money for "organic" food.

The District and Farish Street aren't remotely similar, except they both involve multiple buildings inside the Jackson city limits. That's it. District will be a big bucket of win for both Jackson and MS. This one is happening.

Ok so how do you know if its organic if its not labeled? That's USDAs job but you'll trust bubba at the farmers market where I know people say things are organic to increase sales.

That's so true..
People go to farmer's markets to buy vegetables, that are most likely not organic, then rave about it to their friends.

It's my heart when I buy a hydroponic tomato from beaverdam tomatoes in Indianola because I know I'm not supposed to like it so much, but it tastes so damn good.

The Old Fannin Farmers Market doesn't even hide it.

Heard a lady ask if the green beans were organic. The response was, "No, but I can tell you who grew it." Apparently a local, trusted farmer didn't matter because she made a fuss and left. Farmer's markets are great because you know where the food came from and you know where your money is going. Plus, how many places give your toddler a banana then let him play behind the counter while you shop? Go ahead and consider this an advertisement for the Old Fannin Road Farmer's Market. And so DS doesn't make me pay for it, stop in to Mudbugs while you are over there.

Definitely an issue at farmer's markets. Hell I have friends rant and rave about the "organic" stuff out of my garden when a fair bit of it needed some bug dust or it would have never made it.

BTW, the Yukon Gold taters last year were so high in sugar content that when I fried them up they smelled like a funnel cake cooking. Should have made some moonshine.

Old Fannin had some white sweet potatoes last year that tasted like vanilla ice cream. They said people loved making pies with them. I wished I had a still.

I have no problem with farmers markets. We have an awesome one in Hernando (voted the best in the state) and we go buy stuff from there. We may eventually start selling rice there we mill ourselves. People want to connect a face to the food and that's awesome and I strive to do that myself through Facebook and twitter. I guess my point is that we have the safest food in the world even the stuff not grown locally.

Well I think most people don't know how organic farming works. They use pesticides, natural pesticides. The problem with the organic ones is they aren't as effective and they don't last as long. So they put massive amounts out. Bottle line I would tell anyone WASH YOUR PRODUCE. People buy organic fruit or veggies and just eat them without washing. Boggles my mind. You know what they use for fertilizer? Manure.

True. I won't even touch seafood that was caught somewhere besides the waters off of the USA. For me it's more about where my money is going. I know that every dime I spend at a farmers market is going to that market, the the local tax base, to local employees, and to a local farmer. And send some of that rice down here.

If you see Par Excellence rice (I know they sell it in Sams) that might be our rice. We sell ours to them.

Finally, a place for the pretentious people to shop and eat!

Steel-cut oats for everyone!
