I think I'd make a terrible dentist and hate doing it.

People show up acting all weird because they're dreading to see you, folks mouths are mega nasty, you gotta put your fingers all up in there. I swear I'd drop those picks and mirrors in people's mouths all the time. And then there's dealing with being a professional around really hot gals, as well as all the grossout people you'd have to work on. Plus you often are managing a small business and a few employees with all that entails, not to mention the insurance situation sounds worse than regular medical which is really saying something.

No thanks.

What I don't understand is why dentist gives toothbrushes and things like that away. If I was a dentist, I would have bowls of candy all over office and rather than give toothbrushes away I would give Cokes and sodas without straws. *******

My buddy is a OB/GYN and he might not say he made a mistake in career choice, but he did say that the GYN part of the practice is not what one would necessarily want 95% of the time.

Just looking at the general population of women stomping around my little part of Mississippi, I think being an OBGYN ccould be an apprenticeship for being a veternarian.

Customer service at an airport. Really almost any CS, but tensions are higher there and ramifications worse.

Also, I always thought while easy, it would be mind-numbing: the guy that has to turn the sign from STOP to SLOW over and over during road work.

ETA[: 1 more. The guy that has to drive the trail vehicle with the WIDE LOAD banner.

Could have gone in with my dad's dentist office and ultimately taken it over. And it's pretty good money. But I'm like you. Is that really how I want to spend my working life for 40 years? So I did something else.

Truth.

I wanted no part of the family mom & pop store when I was a child.

It helped put two kids through college and grad school but being forced to deal with the public to that extent while being introverted & having undiagnosed Aspergers wasn’t fun for me at all…

There are still people who say I should have opened up a similar business & I tell them I don’t have the temperament.

Deburr department in a machine shop. All day, looking through a microscope, scraping tiny metal burrs off machined parts without damaging the part. My neck aches and hands get shaky after only 5-10 minutes of trying to troubleshoot something under the scope.

Air Traffic Controller
Permit Coordinator

On old boss called to offer a position in Traffic Engineering at a consolidated Traffic Control Center for State and City agencies. Turns out, the center was basically an ATC center, and I’d be monitoring traffic data, plate readers, at least a hundred traffic cameras, and aiding emergency services and LEO activity. I said thanks, but no.

My dentist always said the weeks following the Fair was his biggest weeks of the year. The reason, Taffy and Candy Apples

As a young high school and college student I chose the profession of blowing insulation into the attics of existing homes with a local insulation contractor. I would invite any of you to try that occupation this time of year. You can't see because of all the dust that gets kicked up. You can't breathe because of all of that same dust as well as whatever fibers (fiberglass or cellulose) that are being blown in that float around for hours. You have a respirator on as well which further complicates breathing. You have on goggles that constantly stay fogged up because of all of the before mentioned breathing issues. You are dragging around 2 cords (light cord and blower control cord) as well as a 5" hose full of insulation that runs all the way back to the truck outside. Dragging those can be complicated when the roof you are under has only lets say about 12-18" of clearance on a low ranch style roof and you are laying on your stomach on a board you are also dragging around to TRY and keep from falling through the sheetrock of the ceiling below you.

17 that job and respect for anyone that does do it........

Lots of coal mines in and around the Bham area. The pay and benefits are quite good.

I’ve heard many 1st hand stories where rookies go through the hiring, procedure, testing, and safety training, and that first time they lay down on that cart and get to the bottom of that mine shaft and say “nope, I quit, beam me back up, Scottie”.

I’ve worked in mines for short times with my job. No way I could do that every day, I’m not physically built for that. Wearing all that safety garb and tools, walking around in the dark and mud and rocks. Crawling thru man doors and climbing ladders that are in questionable condition. You’re around large equipment that can crush you. Everything is either wet or dusty and the dirt gets in everything you have. I kinda enjoy working in that environment for a few days but my back, knees and hips couldn’t do that as a career

Waiter.

The way I see people treat wait staff in restaurants I would end up punching someone in the face. And these are people who are good waiters and waitresses getting crapped on by customers.
You get numb to that. Being a server is one of the best jobs you’ll ever have, if you’re good. You have zero responsibility. You just show up, hustle, and make your money, and that’s it. You have an expense coming up? Work a lil extra leading up and come up with the cash.

As an adult with kids, I couldn’t go back to the day to day hustle financially speaking but now in the same business with over 50 employees, a bunch of vendors, and a thousand general headaches, I miss the days of being free to a degree.

I was just talking to the top restaurateur in the metro imo and I referred to servers as mercenaries and he got a kick out of it.

The worst job on earth to me would be a patrol cop, primary care doctor, accountant, or lawyer. A trial lawyer would be cool but how much actual court time vs paper pushing to get to that point.

I’m just not built for office work or punch clock life and I don’t mean literally punching a clock. If I wasn’t doing what I’m doing now I’d probably be sales. I need autonomy and the ability to either make it or fail on my own merit.

I could suck at many, many jobs considering the number of short comings I have..

Earlier in life, I envied saltwater fishing captains and deckhands. But I think doing it for work would make me hate fishing. The people you have to deal with on a daily basis would break me. People that can’t even hold a pole correctly, drunks, imbeciles that think fishing is “catching”. That and its long days and at times really hard work. Not to mention the explosion of people with boats, increasing federal regulations, and so on.
