I think I'd make a terrible dentist and hate doing it.

People show up acting all weird because they're dreading to see you, folks mouths are mega nasty, you gotta put your fingers all up in there. I swear I'd drop those picks and mirrors in people's mouths all the time. And then there's dealing with being a professional around really hot gals, as well as all the grossout people you'd have to work on. Plus you often are managing a small business and a few employees with all that entails, not to mention the insurance situation sounds worse than regular medical which is really saying something.

No thanks.
Very high suicide rate in dentistry.

You get numb to that. Being a server is one of the best jobs you’ll ever have, if you’re good. You have zero responsibility. You just show up, hustle, and make your money, and that’s it. You have an expense coming up? Work a lil extra leading up and come up with the cash.

As an adult with kids, I couldn’t go back to the day to day hustle financially speaking but now in the same business with over 50 employees, a bunch of vendors, and a thousand general headaches, I miss the days of being free to a degree.

I was just talking to the top restaurateur in the metro imo and I referred to servers as mercenaries and he got a kick out of it.
The idea of being able to leave your job at your job is damn appealing. I don’t know what they pick up in financial stress in exchange, but I’ve often thought once I have enough to cover the basics, it’d be nice to “retire” and pick up a low stress job for spending money.

Lots of anti dentites on here.
Not me. I think a dentist has it made and wished I had gone down that path rather than engineering. Here's why -
  1. People wait for months for a dentist appointment = steady work.
  2. Doctor-ish pay with much less education required. (that can vary - orthodontist vs general dentist)
  3. My experience of setting and rescheduling checkup appointments every 6 months tells me they take lots of vacations whenever they want.
  4. Someone already mentioned that they have all those attractive hygienists and assistants in the office.
  5. The aforementioned hygienists do all the dirtiest work (cleaning) and then take the x rays.
  6. Most of the time (in my experience) the dentist looks at the x ray and says "Looks good. Have the receptionist set you an appointment for 6 months from now." Any work he would actually do is in a mouth that's already been "sanitized" by the hygienist.
  7. I also look at it like this. If a person loves their job, their kids will see how much they love it and follow in their footsteps. If that happens multiple times, you can bet it's an occupation worth considering. The 2 dentist offices I've used over the last 25 years have been 4 and 5 generations deep. One of them actually had a chemical engineering degree then went back to school to become a dentist.
  8. Added bonus of being known as Dr. insert your last name here. Although that doesn't matter to me, it does to some folks. It's more deserving of the title than someone with a doctorate in some bs field of study IMO.

Being a fluffer on a gay p0rn set would be very unpleasant for me. Slightly better job than being an actor on the same set though.

At least you all had jobs to choose from in the 1970s; there were no jobs to be had... anywhere. I remember one year ahead to just mow yards if I could find them.
