I don't do the winterizer, never had good results.....

I have centipede on sandy soil, and as long as your centipede is strong, no need to do anything. Just put down pre-emergent in February/March dependent on where you live.

From my limited understanding, winterizing is not going to do anything for your weeds coming up in spring. Winterizing really is just a way of providing nutrients to your grass over the winter months. This is really not needed for Centipede because it goes dormant and does not require the extra fertilizer. I have always been told it can actually do more harm than good because it can force you grass into a growth spurt when it should be storing nutrients and going dormant.

Is it possible that you put the pre-emerge or too early or too late? I have always had more luck putting out pre-emerge in early January because if I wait until Feb, depending on the year, I already have some weeds active and it is too late.

I could be very wrong on all the info above, this is just what I have been told over the years. I have had a decent amount of success with pre-emerge as long as I get it down early enough.

First question N or S MS? Second are you asking about fertilization or weed control? With cooler temps and moist conditions you could be to late for pre-emerg! Fertilize turf through the summer for healthy turf and there is no need for winterize fertilization. Probably need to call a turf care company. Not someone that just cuts grass.

My understanding of it is that winterizer does below ground what regular fertilizer does above ground - it makes your roots have a growth spurt and dig deeper. I've always been told to winterize around Labor Day (in Jackson) so that your grass will have about a month of growth left for it to work before going dormant. I've got Bermudagrass, but I think the same thinking applies to all of them.

My experience w/ pre-emerge has been pretty good, putting it down in Feb., but this past year our winter was so warm that I already had weeds going when I put it out, which didn't help. Usually wears off sometime in July or so and crabgrass starts popping up.

But I think you're right - winterizer doesn't have anything to do with weed control, and from what I've heard the winterizers out there that also say they have some kind of weed control built in don't work that well on killing weeds. I usu. just let the cold weather take care of my weeds this time of year.
