OT: Yet ANOTHER turfgrass question....

Ok. I put down roughly 6000 sq ft of Bermuda sod last spring in my backyard right before all the rain. It took well and is doing fantastic. There are a few patches of green right now that obviously aren't grass that are too numerous to practically spot-treat. I don't see any Bermuda in the roots trying to green-up yet.
My questions: Too late to spray the whole yard with Roundup? If so, 2,4,D? Let a business come spray it? What say ye?

And a follow up question...

I'm on the cusp of starting a sodding project on a (roughly) 1100sq ft section of my side yard. My father in law says I should screw tilling up what's there and just lay the sod right on top of the pittyful excuse of a lawn that is currently there.... Thoughts?

Tilling will settle and make the yard uneven. Use Roundup first, let it die, then sod. OK to smooth it off to take off the high spots and fill in the low spots, but better to not deep till.

I think it's too late to safely use Roundup all over. I use a lawn service and they came and sprayed something on my Zoysia about 3 or 4 weeks ago. And I have zero weeds. You might consider letting the pros do it. Personally, I would not hire TruGreen though.

couple of days. I just sodded some of my back yard in bermuda because the builder "forgot" to finish sodding it. I used round up and waited about a week. I then tilled just the surface and then laid the sod down.

I am having problems with non broadleaf weeds. What will kill them besides roundup? I used 24D and they are still alive

Ok where are you located? I will assume central to south Mississippi for the purpose of this discussion. It is most likely too late to spray round up. (If you notice most of your spring blooming shrubs are at or just past peak bloom; think Forsythia this is an easy to use indicator of optimal day length and warm enough soil temps to facilitate Bermuda green up)
2-4,D is only going to work on broad leaf plants not your grassy plants. If your weed problems are indeed broad leafs (henbit, purple flowers: chickweed, or plantains, or dandelions 2-4,D will work. If you are seeing poa annua (rough bluegrass) there are some new chemistries out that will remove them, but not worth the cost for home owners imho. You should pre-emerge you Bermuda NOW to prevent crab and goose grass, repeat this again in mid summer and late fall and you will not have these weed issues.

Pre-emergent times are easy to follow if you think about MLB baseball time lines. First application Spring training, Second appl. All Star break, Third appl. World Series.

TruGreen is like a nasty STD. Once you let them in they never go away. They will hound you forever with letters and calls. I had the head of the TruGreen place here in Memphis get pretty nasty with me because I was telling him to never call me again. He was a real jerk about it even though I was being polite.

This time of year I spray trimec for existing weeds and use stealth as a pre emerge. The stealth has a yellow tiny to it and is almost as good as using green dye.

If you spray pre emerge in the fall the trimec won't be needed this time of year. I dropped the ball last fall.

I had my entire yard sodded two years ago with Zorro Zoysia and the guy used Roundup Pro (not sure the difference. Maybe more concentrated?) and sodded about a week later. After the roundup, he used a Harley rake on the front of a Bobcat, got all the dead stuff up, and leveled to a certain extent, then went over it with a landscape box. And then he sodded.

As far as the weeds ... my lawn guy uses some things I've never heard of, but i have no weeds. He came today and used Oryzalin, 2-4D, and Three Way. The last time he came he used pre-emergents but I can't remember what those were called. I assume today was pre-emergents too. I don't think he's used fertilizer yet, but he doesn't use a lot.

Poor service to the extreme. I used them for about two applications 3 or 4 years ago (had fescue at the time) and the second application completely killed my yard. They wanted to reseed, but I told them not to come back on my property and don't call. I did the seeding myself, and later sodded with a warm season grass (zoysia).

You're at the same latitude as I am in Madison, and my zoysia is a little green around the edges. And it's colder here than in Memphis as a rule, and was this winter. I haven't noticed an Bermuda greenup around (most people have fescue), but I think it's too late to risk Roundup.

Yeah, I tend to agree. I spent a lot of money on that sod (large rolls that I installed myself) and would be sick if I kilt it with Roundup. Think I'll stick with the Trimec and spray it myself. Thanks for the info, fellas. It pays to be friends with the common man.

If the soil is compacted you need to core aerify the area then drag something like a section of cyclone fence over the cores to break them up and drag back into holes. This process will not change the soil contours! Core aerifing will provide a better air/gas exchange to the root zone! I would also recommend getting a soil test done, it will provide you valuable info needed for nutrient requirements!

As for spraying roundup now, it can be done, but if you don't know how to calibrate your sprayer and you don't know how much to apply safely, DONT TRY IT!

We spray roundup on our yards in the summer time. Light rate. Does wonders for msma resistant crab grass.

I applied a mixture of Eraser and Simazine 4L last Wednesday. Hasn't done jack to my weeds. The Roundup I used on the patio and driveway has killed everything. Looks like I'll be buying a big jug of Roundup and starting over on my yard.

DCD, what rate do you use, do you ever use the generic roundup from the co-op, and would it be safe to use this weekend after we freeze again?

The generic co-op brand is Eraser. See my above post. Read online this morning to give it a week to see results. Will know by the end of the week if it's any good.

Had the same issue. IMO, avoid them like the plague. Find a good local company. Ask around. If you see a lawn in good shape, sometimes they have a treatment sign in the lawn. Use that company. Do not use trugreen. You will regret it.

Not for certain but eraser if it is only glyphosate it will take 7-10 days to start to show signs of plant decline. The Round-up you used on the patio most likely had diquat or paraquat in it an you will get a 24 hr burn down with it. Be patient with your eraser.
MSMA on the way out Desoto dawg try some DriveXLR8 (Quinclorac) for your crabgrass

Still early for vessel as you see in the label it is an amine formulation of 2,4-D with Dicamba added it will work better in warmer temps between 75 and 80. To see any action now go to SpeedZone Southern this is a product that is an ester formulation of 2,4-D that also has Carfentrazone. The Carfentrazone will along with the ester formulation and Mecrop work better in temps that are only in the 50's. label
