but we were not going to get him and will not get him in the future. Now, McDonnell at Louisville is another matter. And there are plenty other fine choices out there that would have been just as good, if not better, than Cohen. You have to consider just how prestigious UVA is in the overall big picture. Not just in the athletic realm. I have no idea how much money he makes, but I don't see him making the move down here.
that O'Conner would want to be in the same conference as his mentor Manieri where he would have to compete against him for recruits as well as in the standings. They seem to be pretty close. That may sound silly on the outset, but Paul Gregory and Boo Ferris had a similar type agreement because of their friendship, and we didn't play Delta State in baseball for years because of it. At the same time it may or may not be an issue, but it's something to think about.
Another thing I have to wonder with it being Virginia is just how pissed off is John Grisham at MSU baseball. If he ever finds out that we are going after anyone assiociated with Virginia baseball, he may very well offer to toss in some extra money to help UVA with the bidding war should it ever come to that.
I'm not even sure if McDonnell would want to leave Louisville where he can dominate the Big East every year for the SEC.
And maybe they would, because at the same time, I think it would be worth asking both of them at the very least. The worst thing they or anyone else can do is say no.
My stance at this time regarding whoever the next baseball coach is that whoever it is needs to be from outside the MSU baseball family- certainly both O'Conner and McDonnell would satisfy that- and they need to have experience. Although, I will also say that a top level assistant from somewhere like Clemson would be perfectly acceptable as well, but as in any job, experience is preferred. If we hire a top flight assistant, I'm not going to shoot an e-mail to Stricklin that says WTF? is all I'm asying. Honestly, if things continue the way that they are, we're probably realistically looking at hiring someone from some place like Southeast Louisiana- not that that would be a bad thing at all, but it's hardly Brian O'Conner at Virginia as well.
