Our Big Ten role is becoming clearer

Our Big Ten role is becoming clearer. A one-way NJ recruiting pipeline to the higher profile programs and a venue to showcase that talent. Sort of like the bad old old days. In what millennium does Rutgers land a 4- or 5-star talent from Ohio, Wisconsin, and Michigan?

We we are like Atlantic City during to Miss America contest. No one in their right mind would go there except when the spotlight is on. When the contest is over, everyone leaves town.

We were added to the Big Ten to make the Big Boys of the conference stronger: more money from TVs and a recruiting pipeline into New Jersey. Both things have come true. Beyond this boost to Ohio State et al I don't think the Big Ten leadership gives a damn if we do well or not.

I remember having arguments on this board years ago with posters claiming entry to the Big Ten would immediately boost recruiting, to which I replied it would boost recruiting for Penn State and others but probably not for us. This is exactly what has happened. Eventually joining the Big Ten will lead to more money for our program, but probably little else. It is up to our program to improve itself.

When alumni decide to better support the program. We get the program we pay for. If we keep waiting for imaginary millionaires to support, well never be any good.

OSU pays Urban Meyer 6 million due to alumni donations.

That's the program we're evolving to be but it definitely doesn't have to be that way.

This administration can't be trusted to do the right thing with money. After one of the worst seasons in 20 to 25 years, as bad as some of the Shea years, our administration rewarded Fludd with a f cking raise and contract extension.

********. Anybody with the slightest ability to close the better talent in NJ (not even the Top 5...) can get it done a hell of a lot better here than Flood is getting it done. This guy is a freakin' disaster (please don't give me the "3 straight bowl game" ****, either, because he did it with Greg's D in 2012, barely did it in 2013, and with all of Greg's seniors in 2014...).

+1. I can't believe what I'm reading here. This program would be DEAD without the current B1G membership. NJ recruits would be heading out of state regardless if RU were in the B1G or the AAC, but can you imagine how dreary the future would be while getting blown out in the AAC??

Jim Delany pretty much saved the RU D1A football program and erased the bad decisions of Fred Grunniger by offering Rutgers B1G membership. Now the RU administration needs to find a real B1G coach and fxck Barchi for waiting to be revenue neutral.

Here we go again, blame the fans. We donate and support this program way more than it deserves.

Teams that win National championships get bigger donations, and if we did, so would we.

Rutgers is breaking records every year for Athletics donations, some of it forced with mandatory parking and seat donations, but never the less, breaking records.

You think our fans deserve this? And you really think the fans who already give so much are going to make a difference by writing a check for an extra $500?

Please Al, you know the real money for any athletic program comes from high money donors and always will.

As far as waiting, I agree, we should not wait for the big money to come in, hopefully it will, but RU needs to make some commitments and invest some money as well, both of which Barchi refuses to do.

THe fans are not the problem AL, sorry, Barchi's refusal to make any commitments or investments is.

I don't know why people persist in comparing what's happening at places like tOSU and coaches like Urban Meyer with what's happening at RU and with Flood...there is absolutely no comparison.

I'm with Nuts on this one. With the correct staff keeping more of the NJ talent home and coaching them up, we could easily be a competitive team in the B1G. At a minimum, we can be at a level where you need to show up and play a pretty good game to beat us in our place, and blowing us out should be a rare feat.

Besides, the league did NOT invite us because they wanted a better shot at recruiting in NJ. It was to make more money. A successful Rutgers draws more fans and TV ratings to the conference, meaning increased revenue too.

While some of the points in this thread are true regarding why the B1G added Rutgers (recruiting for the other B1G teams, TV money, etc), don't for one second think that Delaney likes what he is seeing from Rutgers. If these beatings continue, I can totally see Delaney meeting with Barchi and JH regarding Rutgers' commitment to big time football.

Ah, that statement is a little disingenuous. You forgot the buy out part if Flood gets fired.
