Our Special Teams are HORRENDOUS!!!!!!!!!

For whatever reason Dan does not focus on special teams like he should. It's time for us to hire a special teams coach and make it an area of emphasis. This was not one night of bad luck. This was the culmination of poorly coached special teams.

For the last three years we have all been holding our breath on every kick-off. I have no confidence in our field goal unit to make the kicks. And this is not just an overreaction to the Alabama debacle. If you had to pick the weakest phase of our game how could you not pick special teams?

And what makes it worse is that if every fan knows it.......the coaches know it and they still haven't addressed it.

It will be difficult for us to EVER get to the elite level with our current level of play on special teams. There are essentially 5 aspects of special team: KO coverage, KO returns, Punt coverage, Punt returns and FGs. Of those 5 the only area we excel in is punting (thanks Baker!) but in every other area we are at best average to below average and in the case of KO coverage and FGs right now we are WELL below average. We are 9 of 16 on FGs this year which is very near the bottom of the SEC and we routinely allow long KO returns and have given up 2 TDs this year already on KO returns. On our FG attempt in the Bama game we have a 6th year senior allow a guy to come right around him on the edge without even making a solid attempt to block him or force him further out to get around and get the FG blocked. And of course this doesn't even count in the Bama game the 2 KO return fumbles (1 lost), a punt return turnover and a punt coverage interference penalty (which granted was questionable) made worse by our HC getting another 15 yarder. On the other side Bama was solid to a tee on all their special teams. Its got to get better to ever have a chance to move up in the SEC West.

We did not lose to Alabama because of special teams. I wish people would stop thinking that if we had an all world kicker and Frank Beamer coaching our special teams Saturday that we would've won.

I hate to rain on your ******** opinions- but the facts are:

State is 1st in the country in punt coverage- 1st in the SEC
State is 27th in the nation in net punting- 5th in the SEC
State is 43rd in the country in KO returns- 5th in the SEC
State is 64th in the country in punt returns- 8th in the SEC
State is 58th in the country in KO coverage- 8th in the SEC

Your opinion is dead wrong- the facts say we are pretty good on special teams...we just need our true Freshman kicker to make a few more FG's

Just saying that our special teams SUCK!!! If we had played flawless special teams against Bama we would have been able to compete. Instead....our special teams suck and we got blown out.

Ahhh...statistics....the salve of the weak minded.

The problem with your weak *** argument is that there aren't statistics for everything that is affected by special teams. My point is simply this....the weakest phase of our game is special teams.

So, Peaches....what say you? What's the weakest phase of our game?

Mullen thinks he is a special teams Guru

Mullen thinks he has to come up with the most grand schemes in our awful special teams. Keep it simple and stop embarrssing ourselves

What plays on special teams would we have needed to make in order to "compete". Did special teams blow 2 different coverage plays for Bama TDs? We had special teams mistakes in the game, sure, but we had many more offensively and defensively.

Corky- you said " This was the culmination of poorly coached special teams." - and I made you look stupid. Calling me Peaches doesnt change the fact I just made you look stupid. Now Corky, go back and sit in the corner, and I'll let you know when it's safe to come out.

Glad your stats agree with my opinion. As I said we excel in punting so no issue there. The other stat you have where we are in the top half of the conference is KO returns and the only issue I had with that were the 2 fumbles this past weekend. KO coverage has been very undependable in SEC games. I think KO coverage and punt returns only even rank 8th because all of our weakest competition is in the books and we look GREAT against the MTSU, Troy and USAs of the world but that's not who I am concerned about. Notice you don't list FG kicking which I believe is toward the very bottom of the league and that is HUGE because every missed FG is the different between points going up on the board or not. Granted our special teams aren't usually as a whole as bad as they were this past Saturday night but anybody who doesn't see an issue there during Mullen's tenure is not looking very closely. And I just said our special teams currently aren't good enough to get us to an elite level, if we just want to be a nice 7-8 win team every year we are good to go.

We turned the ball over 3 times on special teams, and had fg blocked. If I'm not mistaken, all of those turnovers were turned into TDs for Bama, although one was in garbage time and really had no effect on the outcome of the game. To upset a team like Alabama you can't do those things. We might not have won without the turnovers, we sure didn't put ourselves in a good position with them.

So what's the weakest phase of our game? Simple question.

And giving up long kickoff returns and not reciprocating with long returns of our own, getting a field goal blocked, losing possession on a punt due to poor situation awareness, 15-yard penalty for fair catch interference, fumbled kick return.....are the culmination of poor coaching. One of those happens in a game....bad luck. All of them in one game? Gotta be coaching....or in this case....the lack thereof.

Give an example of a "grand scheme" you have seen Mullen put on the field in

special teams. Not sure what you are talking about. Our special team formations look pretty conventional.

No we didnt- we had 3 turnovers- but one was a Russell interception from the half yardline...and it was 24-0 before we even had a turnover in the game

Those stats don't mean ****. The fact is that we've never had great special teams.

You're right. So, we had 2 turnovers that were turned into TDs. Special teams play didn't cost us the game, but it didn't help us get back into the game at any point either. We probably weren't going to come back from a 21 point deficit to Bama, but our special teams play helped seal the deal for them. I'm not saying that Mullen needs to fire himself or anything of that sort, but special teams did play a big part in field position and securing the blowout for them.

If we have a play go wrong, 70-75% of time #32 is involved

I love him to death but he has missed key blocks in the offense and now special teams and dropped key passes that have absolutely killed is in critical times. On the fg block, he didn't lay a finger on the all American that blocked the kick. On the interception, he was the #1 option on the play but he didn't get off the line and get open(granted he was HELD BIGTIME by the dlineman).

Now he's made some big plays too but in crunch time he has hurt us more than I care to remember. Just my opinion.

We've given up a TD return in half of our SEC games. We're around 60% on FGs. We have no kick returns for TDs. We have the fewest touchbacks in the SEC.

The ball is not always kicked to the same spot on the field. Sometime that makes a return look different. I dont see him running a different return every play. We're not watching the same team or you know very little about special teams play. My money is on the latter.
