JUCO recruits. To hinge off of that topic, is it worth it to ever recruit a JUCO player that has to redshirt, and if so, which position would it be ok to do that.
It is a case by case situation. You would prefer to not redshirt them but sometime circumstances lead you to redshirting them. Other schools have redshirted JUCO's and have been successful in doing so.
I would imagine that it is rare for a school to recruit a juco player with the intentions of redshirting him unless there is already a solid senior starter on your roster at the same position. If the juco was talented enough that you wanted him and needed to strike, you could redshirt him until the starter has moved on.
Another scenario could be a great player who needed some time in the weight room to bulk up for the SEC or someone coming off an injury.
In most instances, I doubt a coach recruits a juco with the INTENT of redshirting him. However, it is an added perk if the player has 3 to play 2. In this case, if the juco recruit struggles to learn the pace of the league or isn't quite the player you thought he would be, you can redshirt him as opposed to wasting a year of eligibilty.
I agree with that, especially in the case of OM & MSU.
At the same time, I've seen lots of good juco RBs (LaGarett Blount, Daniel Thomas, LaMichael James, JJ Johnson) & LBs (Ashlee Palmer, Chris White, Rory Johnson, Tony Fein) over the years.
I think safeties have a tough time due to assignments and WRs struggle with new offenses.
with the occasional RB or OL thrown in because sometimes a back or offensive lineman blooms a little late.
But no on redshirting. If these guys arent ready after playing 2 years of juco, they arent likely to be ready to be someone you can count on in D-1. The only exception to this would be in the case of some type of injury they are rehabbing from and they wont be ready to play when the season rolls around.
Mackey at UM needed an extra year....right?<div>
