I was hoping once USC disappeared it would go away. PAC 10 is the best conference in the country according to ESPN. This sounds very familiar. OSU will walk through their schedule and the media pushes the PAC 10 darling. Setting up like Auburn in 04. Bama better not lose a game or the SEC will be on the outside looking in.

over most of the last decade they've been the 2nd best conference in the country, and they areeasily the 2nd best this year too. This year it's:

1. SEC
gap
2. PAC-10
gap
3. Big 10
4. Big 12
5-6 - Big East/ACC, both are pretty bad for a BCS league

So far the PAC 10 has beaten

Texas
Tennessee
Houston
Iowa

Also,Arizona State, which is likely the 7th best team went to Madison and lost by 1 point. If you took the 7th best team from the SEC (weighting it in favor of the SEC because of 12 teams - I took the bottom 2 Vandy and OM out) the pecking order in the SECwould probably be Alabama, Florida, Arkansas, LSU, Auburn, South Carolina, then maybe a tossup between us, Georgia , or Tennessee. None of those 3 teams would lose by 1 point to Wisconsin. Also, UCLA is likely the 5th or 6th best team in the PAC 10. They beat Texas by 22 points. South Carolina wouldn't beat Texas. Oregon beat Tennesse by 35 points. And the PAC 10 doesn't have a team so weak that they would lose to a Division II school. The worst team in the PAC 10 is Washington State, and won their game against a Div II team.

I'm not saying that the SEC isn't better. I'm just not saying that it's as obvious as you guys are saying. And quite frankly, I don't know outside of Penn State and West Virginia what teams the SEC has gone out of conference and beaten that would really impress me. And those 2 aren't as impressive as say Texas and Iowa, both of which were in the top 10 when they played the game. Now, there's no argument that the SEC doesn't have the best team. Alabama is really good. But, just because a conference has the best team doesn't mean it's the best conference. Because that would mean the Big East would have had the best conference in 2000, and I don't think anybody is trying to make that argument.

So, what argument can really be made for the SEC at this point, besides presuming that games would be won or that they have the best team? I'm a fan of the SEC, but I also don't look at it with SEC colored glasses with a thought process like "The SEC is the best conference just because it is."

you cite 4 teams beaten by the Pac 10 and only one of them is in the SEC. if the claim is that the SEC is the best, then your argument doesn't hold much water when you argue for the Pac 10 (argued to be worse than the SEC) by saying they beat teams from the other non-SEC conferences (argued to be worse than the SEC).

just sayin

Mostly because it's obvious Virginia Tech is pretty bad this year. So that means Oregon State has to be good. Otherwise the media darling boise state broncos will get no love.

Bama is scary good, but outside of them I am not really wowed by any team in our conference this year.

The PAC-10 seems pretty solid this year. Oregon is VERY good from what I've seen. Not sure which conference is better, but it's certainly debatable.

The anticipation of "injustice" towards the SEC is laughable. I think the BCS has treated the SEC pretty darn well, Auburn notwithstanding. How many championships in a row is it now? If Bama or Florida (whichever wins tonight) runs the table in the SEC, they will be in the championship game. If not, then they might not. Just like top teams from every other conference.

The point is that the PAC 10 has gone out and beaten highly ranked teams. So far they've beaten 2 teams that were ranked in the top 10 at the time. My point is that the SEC hasn't done that. The PAC 10 has done alot this year outside of conference. They've actually stepped up and played big name teams out of conference and won in most of them. Only 2 games that I can think of that they've lost and those were games they were underdogs in. Those games were Oregon State at Boise and Arizona State at Wisconsin. The SEC hasn't done that. I don't care how strong you perceive the conference, if you go out and play big name teams that are better than most teams in any conference and win - well that says something for your own conference. Iowa has finished in the top 10 several times now and was ranked #10 when they lost to Arizona. UCLA went to Texas and won - by 22 points. Don't say either one of those teams isn't worthy of helping to promote the argument that the PAC 10 isn't as strong as the SEC, because both of those teams would beat 9 or 10 teams in the conference.

This just isn't true about Texas this year. Texas was ranked this year based on their history and what Gilbert did in the 2nd half vs Bama last year. Texas doesn't do anything particularly well this year on offense. UCLA simply exposed them. I can promise you (from living here & watching them play) that Bama, UF, AU, & LSU would all handle Texas this year. Arkansas & USC would probably beat them as well. Heck, on a neutral field, we would probably beat them 4 games out of 10. UCLA beating Texas is really a fairly plastic win. OU is vastly overrated as well. The Big 12 is hurting this year, especially in the south.

so what makes them the best this year? Who have they beaten? Penn State? West Virginia? To this point, that's about it. When someone can provide me a decent argument, I'll believe it. Until then, I don't say the SEC is the best just because it's the best like others do.

I will say that you can take any 5 year stretch and the SEC is the best in that period. It just isn't the best every single year, and this year is one of those years.

for several years now on the Gameplan. They have gotten better overall the last three or so years. I think they are getting close to catching the SEC.
