These two teams have both kept the threads entertaining this year.

I remember when GW held the #1 spot in 1A and I said “there is no way in hell that GW is the #1 team in the state.”

I tried to explain what was happening there and how it will hurt them for years to come, in doing so I may have or have not crossed the line when I said the QB was over rated and they would not be playing past the first round of the playoffs.

6-4 at GW is nothing to be proud of, a team that once topped the 1A rankings going 6-5 will an embarrassment by Maroon standards.

It may be hard to believe but 6-4 is the worst regular season record over the past 20 years at GW. (2001-2006-2008-2013-2017 teams all went 6-4)

“Parry McCluer will beat George Wythe on Friday night”

IMO the best GW team to ever put cleats on Pendleton Field was the 2004 team. We went 9-1, not making the playoffs.

My last game I ever played wearing Maroon & Grey we won 33-0, in the last twenty years only two other teams have ended their season with a win at GW. (2002-2012 both won State)

I compare all teams to the 2004 team, and we would have beaten this year’s team 52-0 easily. They really don’t have the talent nor the heart of past teams.

These guys will never comprehend what it takes to be great because they have been given so much for doing nothing. (#1 team in 1A, best 1A QB in the state of Virginia) lol

We are looking forward to getting some new faces in there next year. It will take a couple of years for GW to bounce back regardless of who runs the show going forward, but we will rise again!

2kings4,
I am sure you were at the P.M Narrows game last night. What you saw has been a recurring theme all year. I have not seen G.W. this year but I will say there is no way P.M. goes into that game giving up 150 to 200 yards in penalties and walks out with a win.
We finally got one of the best linebackers we ever had back and put him in the backfield???... Still scratching my head over that one. However I trust the coaches know more then I so there's that.

Do we have some skill players? Yes there's a lot of talent there but they never got it figured out this year. Coaches or players.
Win or lose we love our Blues and will continue to support them no matter what.

GO BLUE!!!!

Bottom Line... The Blues Took A Butt-Whippin!!!! WATCH THE FILM!!! Yes, there were some "legitimate" penalties HOWEVER, the majority of the of the "Personal Fouls" and "Unnecessary Roughness" and "After the Whistle" calls (last night) were IMO assenine!!!

A kid weighing 400 pounds working his butt off to be involved in the play CANNOT stop on a dime, unable to keep his balance(while trying to "pull up")and falls on the pile at the end of the play with NO MALICIOUS intent?? C'mon Man!!!

PM's QB throws a pass and takes 3 steps (after the release)and gets nailed by three Green Wave defenders, on the sideline and is driven to the ground..... NO CALL?? C'mon Man!!

A Green Wave defender and PM OL gets tangled up and the Green Wave defender "yanks off" the PM players helmet, PF on the PM player?? C'mon Man!!

A PM defender makes a good, physical, FUNDAMENTAL tackle after pursuing the play and the Green Wave ball carrier throws a "short punch" and uses his legs(feet)to separate himself from the PM defender, PM defender clearly not happy displays his displeasure, BAAM!! PF on the PM defender? C'mon Man!!

Ref's throwing flags from AALLLLL THE WAAAAYYYY on the other side of the field when the call(if warranted)should clearly have been made by the official whose responsibility it is to make that call.. If a ref is making a call on the other side of the field, what/who exactly is he watching on his side, within his responsibility?? C'mon Man!!!

AT SOME POINT YOU HAVE TO LET THEM PLAY FOOTBALL!!! As someone posted earlier (2kings4 I believe, I'd have to double check)*** CORRECTION*** it was Tru Blu Tar Heel, my apologies 2kings4....on a previous thread, the Blue's are physical, they are aggressive and they play RIGHT UP TO THE WHISTLE and SOMETIMES JUST AFTER THE WHISTLE.. WHO DOESN'T??

Yes, I agree, there are some discipline issues HOWEVER, THIS IS FOOTBALL!! IT IS A CONTACT SPORT... YES, THERE IS GOING TO BE JUDGEMENT CALLS but it does seem to a little lopsided when it comes to calling what most would consider "petty" or iffy" PF's or UR's.. Just my opinion..

And if I remember correctly, that team missed the playoffs and a 5-5 (or was it 6-4?) Grayson Co. team got in because district champs were an automatic qualifier at that time? Glad those days are gone. I'd rather see 2-8 teams make the playoffs than 9-1 teams be left out.

Yeah 6-4 is a horrible record at GW we have been extremely lucky to have not had a loosing record in over 20 years. Other 6-4 teams were damn good just played a killers row of a schedule. My Sr year we went 6-4 and lost twice to the runner-up that year twice by 1 point each time. No blowouts no beatings it just seems these kids don't care if they win or not as long as they are seen playing. I think they will win next week again PM who I was very high on to begin the season. But sadly for them and us we both failed to do what we knew we could. But in 2 weeks if we do won against PM we have to go to Dixonland so that's a nice sendoff lol

I know it only MY opinion but it's really hard to say which was the best team in recent years. I have to say that the 04' team is the right up there!!! Sad that we will never really know how good they could have been. One thing is for sure the current team wouldn't hold a candle to them or most teams GW has put on the field in 20 plus years.

sir with all do respect if u don't rank the 04' team up there, it's merely because U didn't see enough GW football in 04'. Just saying. They blanked most opponents and I may be wrong to say but I bet they gave up fewer points than the baseball team that year

What year is it?? Just like them GW fans. This years team isn’t worth talking about so you dig up old tape. This year isn’t over, get on board Maroons. I hear y’all are already ranked #1 for next year.

I just looked this up on VHSL-reference's site. BTW, how freaking cool is that dude to make those stats available to us? Much thanks to VHSL-reference!

Anyway, back to GW's robbed 2004 season. GW went 9-1 and outscored their opponents 381-47. They shutout 7 teams. Unfortunately, their lone loss, which accounted for more than half of the points they gave up for the entire season, was to Lebanon. Lebanon won the Hogoheegee as a result and got the automatic berth to the playoffs.

So, who DID make the playoffs? Lebanon 9-1 Hogoheegee champs, Giles 8-2 Three Rivers champs, Floyd 9-1 wildcard, and Grayson 5-5 Mountain Empire champs. Grayson happens to be one of the teams GW shutout earlier in the season, by the score of 56-0. Any way you slice it, GW got hosed that year.

Loved watching the 2004 team. I'm not saying they aren't up there...It's criminal they couldn't prove it in the post season. I'm just saying they aren't the measuring stick.

How many points did that 83 team give up, just curious?

I think only the 1993 and 2011 teams went 10-0 reg season.

Not true. 1983 our Maroons went 13-0 before falling 14-7 to Courtland in the 2A state title game. Virginia only crowned 3 state champions back then, and only sent 16 teams per class to the playoffs. Courtland found the end zone in the second half on a fake punt on a cold, rainy day at Pendleton Field.

Hey they don't have stats easily available for when the dinosaurs roamed, the only measure stick one can have is a team they played on, and this years team isn't close to what we were.

Dinosaurs? C'mon man...I'm not that old lol

Seriously, that team was excellent, and beat a lot of very, very good football teams. The old New River District was leaps and bounds more competitive than the Hogoheegee or MED has ever thought about being.

Right...GW's last season in the NRD was in 1989. Dropped to 1A D2 in the Hogo in 1990. Lebanon made the drop in 90 as well.

The 80's NRD was Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Giles, Radford, Narrows, Carroll Co, and GW.

Giles was just an average team back then. We could count on beating Carroll and GW, but struggled against everyone else.

Giles was pretty good early in the decade...I remember how tough Tyrone Meadows was to stop. Seems like they were pretty good in 89 with Shawn Eaves, as well.

Still say this district could easily be reborn. Narrows Giles Radford Floyd GW Galax and Carroll. Let Auburn and Grayson join if they want. Would be great for all of the schools. What could be.

Fort Chiswell was once in the NRD too, so I would add them to the list. I would love to see that district reborn!

I knew Floyd and Galax were in the NRD at one time, but wasn't sure exactly when they dropped from the district to 1A. I was speaking moreso about the 80's when I was old enough to follow and know what was going on haha!

I didn't realize Fort was at one time. Seems I should have known that lol! Thanks for that nugget, obguthr!

While I dont know about GW, we see this type of thing a lot in society and even more in sports. The older generations of anything always says they had it harder, they were better, etc. Not saying it's not true in this case, it would seem you are correct.

But even back to 2004 rules were different, styles were different, athletes were different, etc. It's hilarious to me when I hear these debates on tv about a team today vs one in past when older are saying they were better. Then the question always comes up, well what rules would you use? Well obviously we have to use the old rules haha

I believe him when he says the 83' team was the best, they played harder competition. I never saw them play, but his word is enough.

I feel the 47 points we gave up that year will be a number hard for any team to beat even playing at 1A level now.

I guess I should say one of the best defensive teams, nothing wrong with that.

Being 9-1 and not being able to continue on took me a while to get past in life, probably why i act the way I do these days.

I felt going into the Lebanon game, and talk was, "We will be playing them again in a couple of weeks, save something for then, unless going undefeated is more important then winning GW's second state title, you guys are better than the 02' team." and we knew we were just as good with better "d" because we played with them.

A lot of team mates agree, but just as many who agree, disagree. Saying we went all out 110 that game and came up short, the better team won, didn't matter if we made the playoffs or not, we could not beat Lebanon....
