receive up to 1 to 1.25 inches of ice on trees and power lines. Been living up in and around the Memphis metro area for 42 years and have never heard of ice accumulations nearing that amount. 1994 wasn't even near that bad. If the Perfect Ice Storm happens as they say might......then I cannot even fathom the consequences. I remember 2' diameter pine trees breaking in half with only about a half inch of ice. The ground literally shook and my young kids were traumatized by the sounds of bombs going off all night long. I sure hope to God this doesn't happen for all our sakes.

So … I work as a First Responder for the State. We got an email from the higher ups laying out if we get called, what we might could expect. In the email, it went into what just 1-inch of ice accumulation can do …. I literally had no idea exactly the deviation it can bring. Obviously MS doesn’t deal with ice too often, but just the weight an inch of ice can put on trees, power lines, structures … just crazy!

I was in the middle of the ‘94 storm in the Tupelo area. It was bad. We were out of power for nearly two weeks.

For goodness sakes kids, yall are acting like this is something new. Life will go on. I’m calling a nothing burger south of 82. And north of 82 will be manageable. Happens every year. I’m very impressed by the states prep and Entergy is all over it.

Ice storms with that much ice do not happen every year. If it pans out it’s a once every 30:years or so thing here.

My point being, some kind of weather event happens several times a year and we come out of the other side. It’s life

Not everyone does come out on the other side. If you have ever had personal experience with one of these rare storms of any kind you know what I'm talking about. Blowing it off like you did really is irritating, and disrespectful.

There's a reason a lot of folks do come out the other side.

It's called accurate preparation.

Look up the Preparedness Paradox. You are a person experiencing it now.

Sometimes preparation doesn't matter. It helps, but with generational storms the unpredictable and unpreparable moments are magnified.

Hey, this is SPS. No matter what is discussed here it will always be the absolute worst, devastating, miserable situation that has ever happened in the history of mankind. No other option should ever be considered or you will be bludgeoned with name calling insults for not complying with the nastiest possible narrative! ****. Joking but not really. :)

The thing with this storm is a large part of the state is expected to get enough ice to completely take down the power grid for several days which is bad enough on its own. The difference this time is this storm is being followed by brutally cold temperatures for several days. Those that lose and power and heat will then have to contend with with temperatures near zero. That's going to be hard for anybody, but for those with poorly built and insulated houses it's going to be a really bad situation.

How are things down that way this morning? Either TWC of Fox Weather had one of their reporters in Oxford yesterday but I haven't seen them today. Radar looks like Memphis is pretty much on the line of snow and freezing rain.

Here, in Madison AL, we had a little sleet/freezing rain overnight and something else is heading in but certainly nothing out of the ordinary. Supposedly temps will rise by noon and it'll just be rain. Madison County is split east to west just about in the middle with snow north of the line, and sleet/freezing rain south of that line. I'm pretty much in the SW part of the county, not far from the Huntsville airport.

Are you talking about the weather or our athletic teams? I’m confused.

If it gets real nasty just get in touch with your inter Jeremiah Johnson soul and let those skills and instincts take over. A country boy can survive. It’s interesting to observe people these days. We would be fine no matter what. However, our next door neighbors, nice people, but totally helpless in almost any situation. All they know how to do is “call the guy”. Way too many people like that these days. People, especially adult men, absolutely must be responsible and have skills necessary to take care of their families in adverse situations.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that you had a great dad who taught you all that stuff. Not everybody is that lucky

If you are reading and posting on a message board, I don’t think survival skills like skinning a buck or running a trotline will be necessary due to this winter storm.
