Passing game this fall

I liked what Morrow did yesterday, and I really liked the number of times he was targeted. I feel like in order for us to be a successful passing team in the SEC, we are going to need him to stretch the field. Trying to go deep over the last few seasons with guys that are 5'8 has not worked well in SEC play. If we can prove he is a threat early in the year, it should help to open up our slot guys over the middle, and also give more space for the tight ends to get open.

With all of the experience coming back at WR this year though, and tight ends looking very good catching the ball this spring....what is everyone expecting statistically from guys like Bumphis, Clark, Smith, Morrow, M. Johnson, this year? With so many targets, who will be our top 3 statistical leaders in receiving?

I feel like Malcolm Johnson has the potential for a big year in the TD category. But I could see a guy like Clark being a yardage leader with his experience, and even Perkins getting a lot of yards receiving out of the backfield.

Thoughts?

The passing game does seem to be coming along. We have a chance this year to better than last year because we have more weapons. As good as Relf and Ballard were, you cannot expect to consistently put together 12 play scoring drives against top tier SEC defenses. This year with Morrow, the tight ends, a quarterback that can throw the ball down the field, and that opening things up for the slot guys we have a chance to hit more big plays and score more points against the big boys. However, it will all come down to the o line. They must be able to protect Russell. If they do, we could potentially win 9 games. If they don't we will win 6 again.

One thing to watch is that due to our pass first mentality our games are going to be longer, our defense will be on the field more. It's a good thing we have more depth.

Another thing to watch for, is since Russell is now the full time QB, I think he will be more willing to throw the ball away and dump it off. I have always felt that since he only played sparingly, he would come into the game feeling like he had to make a Play and thus forcing plays that weren't there. As a full time player, I would suspect he wouldn't do that as much.

To add to that....I would like to see us build some big leads against our weaker opponents early in the year, and get Dak in there to run a similar style that Relf ran the last few years. This could help to shorten the game while also giving him some early experience. The X factor will be the O-line once again this year though, you're right. Good O-line play could turn a good year into a great year.

I look for State to have better than average passing game, but nothing spectacular. The offensive line wont be good enough for a great passing game. The tight ends should be a strength with Morrow a welcome addition at WR. The smurf slot guys will continue to disappoint. I have no idea what to expect from the running game, but someone should step up to be at least adequate. Now, I fully expect a potent offense again in 2014 when T. R. is a senior.

I am not to worried about the running backs, and I don't know much about any of them. The reason for this optimistic viewpoint is because in my lifetime I cannot really remember us not at least having a serviceable running back. We always seem to find someone that handle the load.

The key is the offensive line. It is really simple this year. We have depth and are pretty good at every other position on the field, but that one. They must able to find away to make Russell comfortable. Also due to this, I expect and hope that we would see more screen passes put into the game this year than in any other year.

We have a dangerous quarterback and he has some weapons. We just have to make sure he isn't laying on his ***.

His leadership has come along. His skill set in general has come along. If the O line can give him time, we have the potential to win nine regular season games. The D will be solid again, bend but don't break. I would like to see us generate more turnovers. I hope with Autry rushing the QB more, we will have that potential again.

With good o line play, we could potentially win:

All 4 ooc games
Auburn (They could be reeling without their number one QB and star rb gone.)
UK (not even a threat to us anymore, no matter where we play them)
UT (worst UT team I've seen in years)
Ole Miss ( The only, only chance they have is that the game is in Oxford. During the Mullen era, though, that hasn't mattered)
aTm ( They have no D. None. Nada. Worse than Arkansas D. And we get them at home.)

When you see that many sacks in a spring game, is it because your o-line is playing bad, or is your d-line playing good? I fully expect us to have one of the best defenses in the league this year, but at the same time, seeing a freshman (although a highly regarded freshman) like Quay Evans being in the backfield all day makes you wonder how our o-line will stack up.

Day is the starter. So like you said, hard to learn much from the spring game. From what I have read. Holley is not ready for the SEC, yet. Don't know if that says about Quay.

could only see so much on the poor espn3.com feed. Autry only had one
sack but I think he was going up against Siddoway, the starter. I'm still optomistic, but he looked smaller than I expected. Wilson says he's a good one, and that's good enough for me.

And we all know what Mullen can do with a good TE. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do this fall. Morrow needs to live up to the hype. By late last season he was good enough that he could have played, and a lot of coaches would have burned his redshirt.
