I just do not understand how anyone can say that Rich Rodriguez was NOT an outstanding coach at WVU!
He is the ONLY coach in WVU history to have THREE double-digit victory seasons! And he was only at WVU for 7 years. That’s double-digit victories almost half of his seasons with the Mountaineers. If Oliver Luck instead of Pastilong were AD at WVU when Rich was coach then WVU could have had a Nick Saban-like era for decades. What a golden opportunity was missed!
Don Nehlen, an excellent coach who did good things for my alma mater, in 21 seasons, did it TWICE.
Dana Holgorsen, another whipping boy for WVU fans, did it twice, in 7 seasons.
So Dana set a pace TWICE as god as Nehlen's for double-digit seasons, Rich set a pace that would be NINE double-digit seasons if he were around 21 seasons.
So why all the attacks on Rich, FOR HIS COACHING RECORD AT WVU?
And Dana, even, who was on pace to do it SIX TIMES in 21 seasons?
OK, Rich was an egomaniac, messed around with females, bad-mouthed WVU. What does that have to do with his double-digit seasons and 69.8% winning percentage, 2nd only to Clarence “Doc” Spears’ undefeated 1922 national championship team among coaches who have been head coach at WVU more than 3 years!?
People let their anger cloud what’s staring them in the face: Doc Spears was WVU’s most successful coach ever, Rich was #2 and Don was an excellent #3 and Dana wasn’t chopped liver with his two double-digit seasons.
The numbers are laughing at your hateful ignorance.
Stop hating the man so much that you thrash a W-L record that you would be dancing naked in the streets about if Neal Brown did it. It's so demeaning to the character of those who do it.
