when he signs with State on Tuesday.
"I hear them everyday," Patterson said, adding that the funniest one he's heard recently is "that I'm signing with Mississippi State and that I'm trying to make it a big surprise. I just laugh and I walk off."

A good friend of mine (lives in Louisville) talks with Dennis Thames on a regular basis. Thames claims Patterson will sign with MSU. When told that newspapers and radio reports had him signing elsewhere, Thames said something along the lines, "I don't give a damn what they're reporting...he's signing with State."

Again...take it for what it's worth.

I think he signs with OM. It would be a very entertaining to read the spirit if he did sign with us tho. They would go nuts.

I agree with the OM signing...but Good Lord, that would be so sweet to watch the Rebs absolutely freak out if he does pull out the MSU hat.

I have heard three names of WR coming in this weekend to visit.
Mullen is doing everything possible to land one more burner. Props to Mullen.
It is so great to see this kind of energy coming from the athletic department.

[Patterson will] make his decision public on Wednesday morning at 9 in the studios of CBS affiliate WCBI in Columbus, Miss.
Does anyone else find it odd that he's not doing this at school? I mean, why would he want to hole himself up out of town in a cramped TV studio, rebs? Wouldn't you think he'd want to bask in all the limelight and early morning drunken revelry of the rebnecks from Shuqualak who'd be there in their confederate garb ... IF he was going to sign with UMiss? Instead, he's decided to announce his decision out of town. Interesting.

Playing the Devil's Advocate here, but the Rebs are claiming Pat is feeling hometown pressure to sign with State so the "out of town" angle could be argued against us as well.

Some people love Starkville, some people love Oxford. From 2500 miles away, they are actually pretty similar in most respects.

The reason that I would question his intelligence is because it is clear that he looking to get to the bigs as soon as possible. While MSU will be improved next year, it is highly unlikely that will include a lot of down field stuff that creates highlights. At Ole Miss, he has a guy who finished out the year tossing that kind of stuff all over the field. Alabama has Julio ahead of him and unless he has the most prolific sophomore slump in history, Patterson would be a distant number two there. Even with a fairly decent receiver corps returning, Patterson would get balls thrown at him.

Still, it is high school recruiting and seldom a day passes without a rumor about some kid. If you go to the private boards, you will see rumors of kids committed to Florida, Arkansas, LSU, and UGA who will all flip to OM on signing day. This is not an Ole Miss phenomenon, either. It has pretty much crept into every board of every borderline recruiting class.

I have been following SEC football and recruiting since long before Rivals and Scout appear on the screen. I remember stories told in the barber shops (those were the recruiting hubs in the 1960's) about kids taking money under the table to go to LSU instead of MSU.

The other reality, as several of your posters have pointed out, is that your class is very, very good, but is probably more in need of a 2/3-star OL than a 4/5 WR.

So. The same can be said about your class but it hasn't stopped your coaches from recruiting the hell out of Pat.

that he's leaning out of state. I wouldn't believe there's any way in hell he signs with state, even if he said his NSD announcement would be made from the crack of Mullen's ***.

Good point. To add to the conspiracy theory, Columbus has a pretty large contingent of Bama fans.

while we needed to sign linemen for the future, the athletes/wr can make an immediate impact. We can mask this OLine class with future classes and then also HOPE some of our younger ones develop.

The chances we were going to sign an immediate impact olineman are never very good.

But I liked your post on all other points.

That argument is just plain idiotic. Seriously. It is a well known fact that Saban is after Patterson as Julio's complement, not his competition. They need another option down field.

The Sanders kid is the "burner" and was courted by USC and Clemson for the longest time, USC landed Scruggs and Clemson picked up McNeal. It would appear that lots of folks offered him, but none were serious enough to burn a scholarship on him. The fact that Clemson didn't with only 13 kids in their class suggests that they think he could be a sign and place guy.

The Hood kid is a bit bigger target, but probably not very fast. He is a converted RB who had a pretty good senior year (1000+ yds catching), but is a project. He is close enough to Tuscaloosa that he might greyshirt or take a redshirt walk-on there and convert to DB or something. Although, for that matter, he is just about as close to MSU.

If you want speed, Sanders is your guy. If you want a body, Hood will be just fine.

from Kendall Kelly (a Bama verbal). Bama starting losing Kelly when they went hard on for Rueben Randle and Patterson. Now Kelly may walk on them and Randle is going LSU. This is why I think Bama gets Patterson in the end.

sides of the ball... in particular the DL. I also think that we will not miss Oher as much as many fear. (How many times did you see us run his way last year?)

However, when you look at "elite" classes, like UGA, USC, ALA, etc., it is very apparent that you are correct. That has also been the case historically.

We are looking good to land Ricky Johnson (3-star former Ark commit) and Brandon Heavens (3-star Auburn commit) - and I will gladly take those two.

WCBI is just participating in all the drama of NSD. Bumphis, Patterson, and Thames are going to sign LOI on the set at 9 am on NSD.

Derek said he has no idea about where Patterson is going, but Bumphis and Thames should sign with State.

excited about Auburn. I forgot that Johnson had tripped your way. I'm wondering if there might be an SEC thing in the way there. Nobody has pushed very hard on him. His self-reported GPA and ACT are adequate, but he is retaking the ACT. Something is fishy about that.

I agree, that if he is good to go, he will be a very good pickup.

in a Dan Mullen offense with a Parade All-American QB throwing the ball to him. Not saying at all that UM wouldn't be a good choice for him too, but MSU became a much more attractive place for a good receiver to sign with when we hired Mullen and then Russell reaffirmed his commitment.
