Interestingly, his HS coach wouldn't let him go to the Iron Bowl because of grade issues.

Does anyone else find it odd that he's not doing this at school? I mean, why would he want to hole himself up out of town in a cramped TV studio, rebs? Wouldn't you think he'd want to bask in all the limelight and early morning drunken revelry of the rebnecks from Shuqualak who'd be there in their confederate garb ... IF he was going to sign with UMiss? Instead, he's decided to announce his decision out of town. Interesting.
I am guessing WCBI said, "no you come to our place".

is that part about throwing downfield. Just because we really don't know what we are going to do, you may be right about us throwing the ball downfield, but it's just going to depend on our perssonel. I think UF didn't throw downfield a whole lot becuase that's not one of Tebow's strengths.

was louis murphy, 6'3". they only had 3 guys over 20 catches. i wouldn't say that they had any outstanding WRs, though. plus, they ran a lot with tebow.

three years ago, with leak at QB, dallas baker had 60 catches. perhaps that's a better comparison, since we won't have a starting QB who can run like tebow.

/i did look, of course.</p>

I think he had more yards receiving than Harvin did this year... If not more he was right there in yards and receptions

option offense, which means that long, deep throws are the exception, not the rule. The stink on Smith out of college was whether or not he had the arm to heave the ball down field. Possession receivers, tight ends, and slot backs thrive in that situation... Larry Fitzgerald and Plaxico Burress don't.

I'm pretty sure Patterson thinks he is the next Fitzgerald.

the pitch will be that russell has the arm to run an offense that goes downfield, and perhaps lacks the legs to run a qb option centered offense. and as he's said before, mullen plans on running an offense designed around our personnel. we don't have an option qb.

i see your point. i just don't think patterson would be an idiot for choosing starkville. unless henig was throwing to him in the WCO.

I think that shows that a big receiver can do OK in Mullen's "short passing" offense. And we'll be throwing it more with Russell at QB than FL threw it with Tebow at QB.

Johnson's committment is pretty much a done deal now and is just waiting to be made official. The Arkansas coaching staff was at his basketball game this week and UT tried to get him to set up visit so I wouldn't so no other SEC schools really recruited him. We are probably going to get Heavens as well but his grades could be an issue. He is good but I'm not overly excited about possibly getting him. Sanders is the best WR left on our board besides Pat IMO but he will have to go to JUCO.

I think we oversign by three or four and hope that we can pull in either Pat Miller or Jamal Reid. We are in desperate need of a good corner.

then he knows Brandon Mcrae as well.

I know Im stating the obvious, but most of these kids can be convinced of anything. I doubt he is looking back at Florida's film to see how much downfield throwing he is. If he is, he is probably also looking back to see how many times ole miss used their bigger receivers in the Wildcat formation.

I know I'm a homer, but I think Hodge is as good of a receiver as there is in the SEC. He doesn't get all the publicity that others get, but I really don't think there are many receivers that have the ability to go up and get a ball like he can. On top of that, he actually has great open field speed. He doesn't run a great 40 time for whatever reason, but I've seen him pull away from fast players on multiple occasions.

He's only 6-3, if that can be a knock on the guy, but he's got a great vertical, and he's strong in traffic. Alas, he was only a 2 star though, so he can't really be one of the best in the SEC.

I guess it depends on how you look at it. Ole Miss has three of the top ten guys in yards per game and only two (Hodge and Dex) in catches per game. So, Hodge caught more passes, but Wallace did more with the passes he caught. At any rate, if I am a recruiter talking to a receiver, I trot out this stat and show him that we WILL be throwing the ball to somebody... if not him, then who?

1 A.J. Green-UG, 74.1ypg
2 Brandon LaFell-LS, 71.5ypg
3 M. Massaquoi-UG, 70.8ypg
4 Julio Jones-UA, 66ypg
5 Kenny McKinley-SC, 64.2ypg
6 Mike Wallace-UM, 60.3ypg
7 DJ Williams-AR, 60.2ypg
8 Shay Hodge-UM, 55.8ypg
9 P. Harvin-UF, 53.7ypg
10 D. McCluster-UM, 48.1ypg

how is being 3rd behind Hodge and Mcluster better than being second behind J. Jones?

we have no one on that list, and we will be throwing the ball to somebody. why not be THE #1 somebody as a true freshman?

probably won't start a game for State this year, though. I think he's talented enough to play early, but I also think Lee will be able to manage Mullen's offense moderately well, or at the very least well enough for him to retain the starting job. It would not be wise to burn the shirt behind a shaky O line to go from 6-6 to 7-5.

I should've put "faster" in quotes. Point being, Hodge isn't thought of as being a "fast" receiver, yet he runs away from guys that are thought of as faster than him.

Point being, the guy is fast whether people think so or not. And I'm being dead serious when I say I'd put him up there with anyone. He's one of the few receivers that you can count on if you just throw it up in a crowd. The guy continually makes great catches. He just doesn't get a lot of pub for it because he wasn't highly touted coming out of high school.

For one thing, Wallace was the team leader in receptions and he just graduated. Hodge and McCluster will be seniors, so they will be gone by Patterson's sophomore year, unlike Jones who will only be one year ahead of Patterson. And for another thing, McCluster isn't used as a typical WR. He's used as a slotback/running back.

At least, if I was a coach, and you were the recruit asking me that question, that's how I'd respond.

In all seriousness, Ive heard Pat is going to go to the army. This came from one of our commits, but I cant release the name. Supposedly Pat already has 3 kids and cant support them.

We have three of them. We also have a great QB who has been through the SEC wars and knows how to get the ball downfield. We throw the ball a whole bunch and our #1 guy is gone. We'd like for you to come in a be our #1 receiver next year.

vs.

Pat. I wish I could show you our offense, but I can't. I can tell you what I did at Utah and Florida. I'm pretty sure that this freshman we have coming in will be okay.

of how someone would couch it if they were trying to convince him to come to their school, then any school can make a good argument.

I thought the point was that he sees he'll be no. 2 behind Julio at Bama. And my point was that anyone can see that being no. 2 at bama is better than being no. 3 at ole miss.

Oh, I'm sorry. His name isn't on there either, huh? Well, the #1, #2, and #3 receivers at Ole Miss all had enough catches to make that list.

That's the difference. As I indicated in another post. Julio will get all the tosses. While the guy with the most yardage for OM last year was actually #3 in number of catches.
