Great get! I am always amazed that we get kids to turn down full rides to walk on.

Excellent news. This is as big a walk on as you can expect these days.
It is a very good walk on class especially in the trenches.
He's a D end. If a certain D line coach played a hand in this that's a major cherry on top of what was an excellent recruiting cycle for him.

"Yet to be seen, they have to prove it on the field, I will judge by their on field play, yada yada yada, fart sounds"

For not having recruited at this level before a great big "Well done!" to that certain D line coach.

Funny how you always said people cannot get excited about recruiting classes until they prove it on the field. Unless of course their position coach played here.
Same old Tom. Been working on your math skills?

Watched him play BB. The best athlete on the court, but definitely a walk on. Nice frame, has some solid explosiveness, if he goes all in with S&C could maybe make a move.

Not going to bag on the kid, he's got the guts to walk on, then he probably has a work ethic to match. I wish him luck.

What we need is more offensive linemen to pass on the low level D1 and walkon.

We have had PLENTY of walk on lineman playing a ton on the lines.

Yeah, preferably 4th and 5th year players that win the job, or can play on a pinch like the TO days. Not like the solich, callahan, pelini years

Welcome young man. Anyone know if he is related to Bryce Paup who played and coached at UNI, played for the Bills and now coaches at Minny?

Not in a direct way, like over the past 4 generations. Maybe there is some distant connection but I haven't heard of it.

Always love the walk ons.
Lord knows we don't get them like we did back in the day, with franky and the boys stilling all the good ones.
So I especially love it when we do get a good one.
Count me as happy. :D

I hope he ends up worthy of a ship, and in the meantime I sincerely hope his parents can afford to pay his bills, because student loans suck. It's probably my #1 "if I knew then what I know now" pieces of advice I'd give myself if I could go back. It was crippling for about 10 years.

Who is he? I am ignorant....

Someone Parrella has been in on since he started coaching for us. He's super high on Paup, so much so he's guaranteed a 105-man spot in the fall. Other walk-ons, not considered or tagged as a priority, aren't guaranteed a spot till school starts.

If this kid has a work ethic, and I have no clue one way or another but hear he does, I can see him on the field as a redshirt freshmen with special teams.

Parrella nailed him, but coach Wilhite did one hell of a job with this walk-on class.

Thanks.
Never been this hopeful for NU football in a long time. These coaches get it

And the follow up question is, would Paup have come on board if we over signed, ran guys off, and didn't reward walk ons like we do? I think not.

Good point.

I have been following all your posts on this topic dingle very carefully. You make a good case and caused me to modify my thinking.

It is probably true that we will never be able to recruit at the level of teams in talent rich areas like Ohio or Texas. So for us the walk ons are more important as a means of building depth. Better to get preferred walk ons from under the radar small town Nebraska kids, than take a "reach" two star from somewhere else. Furthermore, you can analyze walk ons over a few years to see if they deserve a scholie, thus avoiding recruiting busts/voids.

Osborne believed in walk ons for all those reasons and understood that it is critical to the success of NU football to have them. You don't want too many walk ons, but a few here and there.

I just think its a philosophical question that there may not be a correct answer for one way or another. I would have liked another 4 star guy in this class and maybe we should have cut bait with Calvin and maybe we would have done that IF we could have gotten a kid with equal talent. I guess my point is that we have a history of getting kids from our walk on classes almost every year that end up having a greater positive impact on our program than a single 3 or 4 star kid ends up having. I don't think you have to worry about having too many walk ons (they tend to leave the program if it becomes evident they won't ever play). I just think you have to worry about having to start 2-3 walk ons on each of your O and D lines like we did last year.

I should have been clearer. When I said we don't want too many walk ons I meant as starters. Thanks

We can still oversign and have scholarships available for walk-ons.

Walkons that bleed husker red, have a strong midwest work ethic is what drove our greatness. The talented kids had to bust *** in practice so as to not get whipped by a walkon.

That said I saw Paup as a DE. I was thinking LB. He could grow into a very good DE, not sure LB would pan out.

I also took the time to look at our OL walk on class. I'm very impressed.

how do we do that without violating B1G rules?

What B1G rules?

20 seniors
+3 B1G allowance (part of oversigning)
2 seniors graduate before fall camp
25 scholarships available for '17 class

Sign 25, lose guys in the summer and now you have available scholarships for walk-ons.

The lose guys in the summer is the part that I was referring to regarding the B1G scholarship rules.
