Payne: "This is year one for me"

This doesn’t surprise me. I am convinced he is on a 3-4 year plan. From the start this was never about winning in year 1 or 2. The entire process from Day 1 to now screamed patience. Most everyone gave him a pass in year 1, including me. I was completely willing to be patient.

Then Year 2 starts they come out the gate with zero sense of urgency. The light bulb didn’t go off until after the UK game. All of sudden his sense of urgency picked up. Too late. Year 1 is now anchor around his neck in deep water because of Year 2.

Completely different vibe it they are sitting at 11-5 or 10-6. Year 1 starts to fade. He shouldn’t make that statement sitting at 6-11. Even if I grant him his excuse any 1st year coach at Louisville with no restraints should never be 6-11 while also losing a majority of those games by double digits.

This is a guy that 100% believes he is doing a good job.

I have never seen such lack of basic skills in 1.5 years at this level. He has decent talent, and I believe the team as a hole could be better in those basics if pushed to do so. How many of the "projects" players are still playing much less still here? KP's priorities are not in proper order, as a result the players suffer as he figures it out.

This shows the strategy that both KP and this “leaderless” University are planning.

I expect the next trick will be showing a statistic on KP beating the point spread; doesn’t matter about losing, “just show some improvement”.

I didn't want to believe it but I think we are now facing another year of Payne... Why? Mainly financial reasons, second, I see effort at times by the players. They got the lead down to 6 at one time when they could have just rolled over. This is not Petrino's last year when everybody gave up. Third, the players seem to have his back. There is no hire out there (like there was for Jeff Brohm in football) that guarantees automatic success. I do think that he believes 100% he is doing a better job.

The complete lack of urgency until after the uk game is really puzzling and frustrating. Where was it his entire first season or especially earlier this season when losing to a D2 school for the 2nd straight year, losing to Chattanooga, Arkansas State, DePaul, etc.?

Also recruiting so many projects and guys that simply can't compete at this level while neglecting filling positions of need yet again.

I was thinking that last night. "Well, we are 27-2 against the spread so k will be back another year"

He won’t be back. I believe initially everyone including leadership understood year 1 was going to be challenging, not 4-28 challenging. They scheduled to get him wins. Then it was a mess all the way around. Then Josh has to have meetings. No good way out midseason. KP gets the message. Starts coaching with more urgency. Play better but still lose.

Same here. The lack of basic skills is mind-boggling and cringeworthy at times. I would really like to see one of their practices.

How would year 3 be received by the general fan population? What would it do to season ticket sales, YUM revenues and concessions? How would the business owners around the YUM feel about a year 3? How do you get recruits or transfers to come here with the two year record we would have? Those are all arguments against giving Payne another year.

So…positive arguments for bringing Payne back for year three. Some financial considerations regarding yet another coaching buyout. Continuity, even in a dumbed down, bar lowered sense. Joy for KP supporters. Hope for an improved record over the first two seasons. Perhaps holding on to some players who like Payne. That’s about all I’ve got.

In my humble opinion, facing year 3 is far more scary than anything the NCAA would have done to us.

Just curious if anyone knows if he actually recruited anyone before or was just player development? All I remember that stood out was how he would attract top talent and yet as was just pointed out we have no one signed for next year.

we don't have a single player signed for next year.
That's only reflective of the uncertainty we have of retaining him. Hell, I doubt you would have any signees if you replaced him with an interim coach, only if you knew who would be the next HC. Apparently we are not there yet.

The whole KP is a great recruiter is BS. Any of us could recruit with Cal to UK.

He had ONE commit for next year and there aren't many guys left. This has been a horrible experience but thankfully it will be over soon!

Remember that tweet from Bozo after NC St game when he said win streak over at one? Yeah. Since this is year 1 KP needs to donate last year's salary.

He just doesn't get it. And that's fine no hard feelings. Despite all this, I do hope if he's here indefinitely he can win some games. I agree with Cycle it just wasn't a priority early on, not sure how they could expect fans that have been suffering before he got here to hang in there. Maybe they don't need the fans.

This is simply one of the most self-serving and absurd statements that I’ve read in a while. And in this day and age - that’s saying something.

Here’s what I find more noteworthy though. He - at least from the attached tweet - didn’t answer the question of how long it would take to get it going?

Well Kenny, what the effing answer?

Payne's Answer to how long it will take : "To answer your question, I don't really know exactly. But to me....in my world...inheriting what I inherited...this is really year one for me."

The key part of that answer is of course - “in my world”.

It’s a shame there wasn’t a follow up question asking him what color the sky is in his world…

Sad thing is there was no follow up. Why didn't someone say "well Kenny what was last year?" Or "what do you say to the kids last year you said you cared about"?

Our media is WEAK!! They will crush someone on their shows, and I agree with them on what they're saying about Kenny, but they won't do it in a press conference. You don't even have to crush him. Just a follow-up question, but they are all too weak and scared.

What?? That's because the earlier game went long. The ACC network is not like ESPN where they can move the game over to ESPN2 or ESPN News. Has nothing to do with KP...

Well, it does a little. If KP wasn’t the WOAT - the UofL-UNC game would almost assuredly have been on ESPN proper like it usually is.

True, but even ESPN and ESPN2 schedule games back to back and there's always a threat a game will go into OT. ESPN just has more options than the ACC network.

The entire TV market had changed. This weekend on CBS or ABC they showed USC and Arizona St. One major network had Boise St on in the Louisville market.

Louisville being god awful doesn’t help but conference affiliation is the main factor.

I do firmly believe that, unless the next coach is the second worse coach we’ve ever hired, you will see a bounce back in our national profile. Right now, I don’t even want to watch this team regardless of the network!

That said, I’m surprised more of KP’s post game comments haven’t made the national air more. Everyone loves a good blooper reel!

The issue though is that we thought we had a homerun hire, no brainer with Mack. Of course, we all know where we are with Payne. Is there a can't miss hire like Brohm in football out there? I used to think there was but now we might need to take a risk on an up and coming coach and hope things work out. Not a good place to be if you're my age... 66.

I believe there are a couple at least fairly close to that. The question is would they actually come here and could UofL afford them? Though I'm starting to think your thoughts on them hiring a younger up and comer will be the direction they go.

Not sure. I think Satterfield and Payne were up and comers…maybe not so young.

Satterfield is 51 and well yes Payne is 57. Agree not so young. I was thinking more of someone in their late 30's or early 40's.
I get that, but I still feel that someone with a successful Power five coaching resume should be given top priority. At this point I’m a bit gun shy of unproven coaches.
