AFTER THIS SCRIMMAGE I WALKED AWAY THINKING BIRD WILL BE A POWER IN THE AREA AS USUAL, GRANBY HAD A FEW GOOD PLAYERS, AND PETERSBURG IS FLYING WAY UNDER THE RADAR. A FEW LC BIRD FANS SAID THAT THEY WERE IMPRESSED WITH THE WAVES TOUGHNESS AND SPEED. BIRDS BACKFIELD LOOKED GOOD AND LOOKED LIKE THEY AVE 10 YARDS A CARRY VS GRANBY. PHS WAS TOUGHER VS BIRDS RUN GAME WHICH MADE BIRD GO TO THE AIR A LITTLE AND THEY STILL LOOKED GOOD DOING THAT. IF PHS CAN STAY HEALTHY WITH THAT BRUTIAL SCHEDULE THEY COULD MAKE SOME NOISE IN THE PLAYOFFS...

mbonape1 I agree that they are the top 2 class 3 schools in the 804. We will find out early how the Wave stack up to the Blue Devils as they play each other on 9/22 in Hopewell. The Wave could possibly be 3-0 or 2-1 heading into that game. James Monroe will have a lot to say about that though.

First, welcome to our forum, steeler.

Perennial top team in 3a, James Monroe is keeping a low profile. Don't be fooled, they will be improved from last year. But so will Petersburg.

One big difference will be the fact that the game will be played in the comfortable confines of Maury Field, (comfortable for James Monroe that is). I look for JM to win by at least 14. A Petersburg loss by less than that, or pull off the upset, and the Blue Devils will have a fight on their hands. As will Buzz Edward's newly re-molded CH Colonials. After that, the Crimson Wave may not find another win the rest of the regular season.

BTW, Hopewell needs to fill some pretty big holes on the line. Coach Irby has built a "program" down there, but I'm not convinced that Hopewell will even be as good as they were last year.

Petersburg always has a couple or three exceptionally good and fast athletes. When they can put the ball in their hands in space, they are always a threat. What usually happens at Petersburg is "numbers". They just don't get enough good players to come out and stick with football for the duration. That leaves a lot of vulnerability in their starting 11. A), they get worn down by the second half, and B), the opposition identifies their weaknesses as the game wears on, and exploits same.

Offensively Hopewell has some talented receivers, rb's with Walker leading the charge and the qb is a dual threat; however, all of this is useless if they dont get sound o line play. This will be their nemesis as last year when they played physicsl teams.

Same thing goes for the defense. They dont have the size to slow down the run. Their db's are first rate, but again who needs to pass against them.

I am not a Hopewell hater. Root for them in every game, but one. This team just will not go deep on the playoffs. The physicality of the bigger schools on the district will be too much to overcome.

The question is can Hopewell beat Motoaca and Meadowbrook this year. Pretty certain they lose to TD and Dinwiddie. If they can beat those 2 and go 7-3... Who is "Burrel" from Lower Burrel, Pa....that is their game 3 and how the hell did that end up on the schedule? Even if they drop one to Powahatan or Norcom which I don't think they will. But lets just say they went 6-4... We don't think they can make a run in the 3A east playoff race? I assume that Pheobus and JM will be there but Hopewell can't play with those guys on any given Sat in Novemeber? They will be ok in Class 3

Lol, mbonape. Max Preps strikes again. They have included Hopewell, PA's schedule with Hopewell, Virginias. Hopewell plays Tabb, Norcum and Powhatan out of district. Good catch hoss.

Monroe wont be a contender this year... Not the same team as of late... They look to me like a 5-5 team after their scrimmage with Brookville yesterday... They dont have the talent all over the field kinda team like they usually do...

Without the benefit of seeing JM scrimmage, and not having any first hand knowledge of how things are shaping up, I still say the worst they finish is 7-3. Coach Serbay always gets the best out of his kids. So I respectfully disagree with you.

After a 0-2 start for JM, do you care to recant?

He’s right DP don’t put much stock into James Monroe this year
