You know a basketball game always takes precedent over a bowl game for UK fans. They play Louisville on January 2, so if I'm the Liberty, PapaJohns, or Cotton, I would stay far away from UK this year is possible. The Cotton would stay away from them anyway due to location, but the Liberty and PapaJohns would be stupid to take them.
But still can only seat a third of the people that Commonwealth Stadium can. Some fans will go to the bowl game simply because they don't have b-ball tickets. A student there get to go to maybe 3 or 4 games a year because they have a lottery for tickets. Therefore, some students may choose to travel to the bowl because a bowl ticket is guaranteed.
there are a ton of UK fans either in or within a few hours of Nashville. Atlanta...not so much. I think the whole "can they sell enough tickets" argument for bowl games is a little silly. The actual schools get an allotment of maybe 15k tickets? Any university with a decent enough following should be able to sell that many.
