How do you blame Tommy for that play? Forget the coaches trying to cover their ***. Go watch the play with your own eyes. QB sweep the running back should be picking up a block to help his QB--not running a route. If two players got it wrong...then it is still on the coaches for doing a piss poor job of communicating.

I'm sorry if it is so hard for you to believe that a running play was disguised as a passing play. I find it incredibly hard to believe that coaches would lie in this situation just to cover their ***. It would be suicide. Besides, something tells me Tommy didn't do interviews after the game because he knew he screwed up.
That is completely absurd.......a coach is an authority figure who has proven themselves to get where they are in their field. Any parent who is not completely worthless teaches their kids to respect authority figures. Just like a cop does not need to earn my respect, neither does my coach, professor, pastor or boss. Those folks can lose respect, but initially that respect is given and must be in a civilized society. This is the problem with our world today. If kids we taught properly to respect the cops, they would not resist arrest and in turn get their butts beaten down. Chris Rock has a great video on youtube on how to not get your butt beat by a cop.
I'm sure some players do and I'm sure some don't. The staff, not just Riley, need to gain the respect of the entire team. IMO, they haven't done that yet with the mistakes that have been made. Also I'm a fan, I'm nobody. He doesn't need my respect, although, he hasn't earned that eitherSo you're telling me the players don't respect Riley? You really believe that? Didn't the running back speak last night and say it was a pass? I thought I read that on here. Tommy probably did feel responsible for the loss...after all he was 10-31 105 yards with an INT. He shouldn't want to talk to anyone.
I just can't buy that it is a play call to let a defender go tackle your qb so it will look like a pass play. If it doesn't make sense. Coach to RB " Don't block anyone-- that could possibly spring the QB for a first down. Instead let the defender run tackle the QB so it will at least look like a pass"
I think you're missing the point. You're not just going to respect someone of authority just because someone tells you that you should. You can say you do or you can act like you do but that's not respect. That's going through the motions. For example, we've probably all had multiple bosses. Some good, some bad. Did you respect all of them because you were supposed to or because they earned it?
He said he thought it was a pass and then backtracked later and admitted he was confused. I have said numerous times that the coaches should have called a timeout to clarify what was going on. I think there was confusion all around after seeing a still pic of the play. There are guys going both ways on the play.
I will grant you that some on the team may not respect Riley and staff... Those are the ones pining for Bo, in my opinion. if that is the case, they aren't fully on board.
Many don't want to bring up Pelini but if you're talking lack of respect for the current coaches, I don't think there's any way Pelini can be kept out of the conversation.
And I think that is what we have in the locker room. People that don't buy into what these coaches want to do yet and when people don't buy in, they are not going to be successful. To be a great team, everyone has to buy in. Will this staff get everyone to buy in? It remains s to be seen.
I think you nailed it. Should have called a timeout. What I want to know is if Langsdorf basically said, 'We're gonna run a pass play but I want you to just run. Don't pass.' Basically hanging TA out to dry if a defender came free, like one did. TA was dumb for throwing that ball but they play call was even dumber
I don't think they'd be 'pining' at all if Eichorst would have hired someone that wouldn't have made most people question the decision. Plenty of fans did, I can imagine a lot of players did as well. That's why he needs to earn that respect
I'm hoping that the staff can turn this around and players will buy in but like you said, it remains to be seen. On a sidenote, I feel like this has been a pretty good conversation without immaturity and name-calling. Doesn't happen on this board very often

I hear what you're saying... I have been thinking that these 9 months have been great for building these relationships. But when adversity hits, that's when we see how strong these relationships are I guess.
I have given everyone in my life the benefit of the doubt and respected them from day one, whether they are an authority or not. A person should have respect until they do something to lose it, particularly authority figures. Do you just never respect anyone that you come upon until they have proven themselves to you? That is a horrible way to go through life.
There is definitely that possibility. My thought is more of confusion and that is why the timeout. They should have been able to see that Carter was lined up wrong and called a timeout. I have been told that it was emphasized to Tommy that he run the ball no matter what. I think there were some things lost in translation.
That's different. Random people I meet every day are not people I work alongside that can affect my livelihood.
You must be a newcomer to the world of football if you have never heard of a play where you want 10 players to thoroughly sell the look that it is a pass play in order to deceive the defense. In those instances, sometimes the QB is the only one told, that way you ensure that the other 10 players will do exactly what they would do if it was a pass. Keep studying the game young man, or lady. You will eventually catch on.
If a defender comes free, Tommy falls to the ground and it is ballgame over. How is that hanging him out to dry? QBs slide to the ground 10 times a game at least. It isn't alot to ask of a 3rd year QB....or of a peewee QB for that matter.
Not realizing that the play was doomed from the start was hanging him out to dry. I like the idea of just sliding down, then putting the ball in the hands of the game MVP-Foltz

The play was not doomed by any means.....all the play had to accomplish was to not result in a turnover and to keep the clock running and the game would have been won. It was basically a stretch running play with your most experienced player. The stretch play runs a couple extra seconds, rather than a dive.
A quarterback bootleg RUN was called, and if that play had been executed, NU would have had a win. That is factual.

Is Illinois a quality team? We were averaging 5.5 yards a carry running 3.4 per passing attempt-why keep passing?
