That's OK. I'm perfectly happy with McCray-Penson. May even be a better fit and better chance to stem the tide of transfers out west.

Who's the Van Schaefer they mention in that article?

I was hoping we'd get Walz, but it looks like he just doesn't want the job. Of course, he could be like Saban ....

Very excited to get NM-P if this holds true. Not the extended track record/resume as a HC as Walz, but she took over an OD program that was in much worse shape than Walz did, and not able to recruit as well at OD as was possible at UL. She appears to have made a HUGE impact on OD. They play great defense, but also improved their offense significantly under her.

Imagine what she wil be able to do with the recruits & support she will get here. Also, she spent 10 years on Staley's staff, and was teammates with DS on the national team. That could prove very useful for us when playing them & recruiting against them.

Would’ve loved Walz but this is a good hire that has a lot of potential. Can’t wait to see what she can do here.

One thing is for sure (assuming no additional transfers) she is getting a loaded team next year

I’m very excited about getting NMP. I think she’s going to ge a better fit for our girls than Walz. Personally think he would always be looking elsewhere. She can build her dynasty like Staley and if I read correctly she’s coached Rickea and the TN girls coming in AAU or something else. Recruited a lot of them too. I just think she’s going to be the right fit for us and made HUGE turnaround at OD in 3 years.

I'm good with this. Something about Jeff Walz. He's always entertaining offers like he did this year from us and last year from Tennessee, but said he would retire or die at Louisville. Didn't Dan Mullen entertain offers every year?

I'm willing to get behind Coach McCray-Penson and see what happens.

This has a Joe Moorhead/Rick Ray feel to it. I know this will get a bunch of down votes but in two years you will all agree with me.

For starters, not a Moorhead fan, but not even close to being as bad as Rick Ray.

If Rick Ray had a long stint in the NBA, was part of a National Championship coaching staff, and turned around a bad program as a head coach... yeah, very Rick Ray.

She is from Collierville, Tn. Yes, she played at UT, and there will always be that pull if that job were to come open. But Starkville is closer to Collierville than Knoxville. In fact they are closer than Austin is to La Grange, the birthplace of Van Schaefer.

And who knows, she might be able to turn Jayla Hemingway around being they are both Tennesseans. As someone said, let the next few weeks play out and see who she can re-recruit. We may forget about Ol’ Van in short order.

Edited to spell La Grange correctly, being a big ZZ Top fan, I should have gotten that right.

I don’t agree with this but my one concern is that she’s going to end up being one of those basketball coaches, like you see in the men’s game, who becomes the “next up and coming coach” because they have a couple of good years at a lower level, gets a big name job and never really does anything.

But that’s just my usual pessimism nagging at the back of my brain. If she’s the hire, I’m on board.

It's really not pessimism. It's commonly how these things play out. It's very hard to maintain success after losing a program defining coach.

That said, it's also unusual to walk into a situation with a team that has Final Four potential right away. She'll have a lot of pressure, but a ton of pluses.

Clearly, she knows basketball at a very high level. I'm hopeful and happy with the hire.

For football the comparison would be Tom Herman maybe. I think Johnnie as the Moorhead comparison and I think that had something to do with John deciding on Nikki.

There is certainly risk but there wasn’t an available coach I was any higher on.

I’m sure there were other good coaches that applied and Harris could turn out to be better than her. I’ve never heard Harris talk to make any guess at her personality but John has been around her for years so he should have had a cool feel for her aptitude to be a HC

It’s also interesting that most of our fans are convinced this is a championship team roster. I think we are really good but we had some major holes last year that I’m not sure we fixed.

I don’t look at this team and say anything less than final 4 is a bad job

There are never any guarantees, not even if we had hired Walz or if Schaefer hadn't left. But her pedigree is about as good as it could possibly be. Much better than 90% of those up and coming mid major coaches who never really amount to much.

I think it's a bit of an overstatement to say "most of our fans" are convinced this is a championship team, assuming you mean NC.

This is a good team. They are losing an experienced starting guard and a solid transfer, but adding a McD's AA transfer and some impressive freshmen to a team that would have been a 3 seed this year.

I think that certainly qualifies as a team with Final Four potential. Now let's hope she can hold the team together.

Spit my coffee thinking, now this guy is True Maroon. But, if anything, it may have a Les Miles feel.

McCray-Penson may have the best overall past experience for any Coach we have ever had except maybe JWS. She was a star while playing basketball at Tn and being SEC player of the Year, 2 time AA, her 9 or 10 years at SC speaks for itself. Also played with Dawn in the Olympics and Coached a National Team last summer. Spent 3 years at OD with last two years winning 20 plus games. She just has the "IT" factor.

She is a big time winner, she fits the mode for our program, team she inherits and our school.

Not only are they both Tennesseans, but Jayla's high school is about a quarter mile away from Collierville.
