Allow me to give you a brief Prep/MHSAA football history (b/c I'm a Prep alum) which I garnered from the Clarion Ledger and a bit of google use for specifics.

Prep plays 2-3 public schools a year. If I'm not mistaken, they fill up their non-conference schedule with MRA, JA, and public schools. Before the MHSAA allowed schools to play MAIS school, prep would schedule some of the big TN academies (MUS and Brentwood). Yes, If my memory is correct, it was the MHSAA that was the hold-up for MAIS/MHSAA matchups (of course I'm speaking in a recent years time frame).

2010: Prep had a down year, lost in 1st round of playoffs which is pretty unusual for Prep
-beat Stanislaus 24-14, Stanislaus went to 3rd round of 4A playoffs
-lost to Pearl, 35-28. Pearl went to 5A playoffs
-Blown out 35-10 by eventual 3A champs Forest.

2009: Good year but lost championship to JA
-prep gave 4A state champs Stanislaus (w/ Favre) their only loss of the season (played @stanislaus).
-Also beat 3A runner-up Forest for their only regular season loss.
-I think they lost to pearl for the first time that year though.
-Prep wasn't even the MAIS state champs either, JA beat them for the crown.

2008:
Excellent year
-The first year the MHSAA allowed inter-association competition (coincidentally, it was the same year as one of prep's best teams in at least a decade).
-Prep shutout eventual 3A runner-up Newton 24-0 for their only regular season loss (not completely sure about the 3A runner-up part)
-Prep also completely destroyed 5A pearl 50-0 (Pearl sucked balls.... but still a 5A school)

Hall called Chaz Ramsey the best offensive lineman he had ever coached.

Hall said Will Martin could really play and was tough as nails at LB(signed with Southern Miss and now playing for Ole Miss).

Hall recruited Jared Foster to be his starting QB.

Hall said Peyton Johnson (I think that was his name) is our "Tim Tebow". He claimed they totally designed the offense around this guy's ability to run and pass.

All of the players listed above came from the "bump and giggle" league.

Hall can say whatever he wants about the MAIS, but he doesn't mind "hepping" talented MAIS players make the switch to MC.

The two best MAIS teams I have seen in person were Simpson Academy's '05 team and JA's '06 team. Those team could have beatenA LOT of public school teams. I watched JA play several times in '06 and watched MC play Olive Branch, and I left the MC game thinking that JA could possibly beat them. Granted MC is a better program now, but they were pretty good that year and I wasn't the least bit impressed with them. JA's OL and DL were better than MC's. And I stand by that statement. The '05 Simpson team would have murdered most, if not all public schools their size or even a classification or two bigger.

It might only be once in a decade, but JA and Prep have fielded teams that could have competed with MC. When watching Oloibe Branch and SP play, I am stunned at how much more athletic they are than any team in the MAIS. MC isn't nearly as impressive from a physical standpoint. They are physically superior, but they have never blown me away when I watch them.

And since someone mentioned basketball, I feel compelled to mention that MRA's basketball team beat MC's team that won the 5A state championship. It was in the summer, but they beat them. They would have done it during the regular season as well.

how many people that bash the MAIS schools have ever actually watched a MAIS game before.

I would add that Prep's 07 team- the year they went 13-0 and had the miracle Kaleb Barlow catch- would have beaten MC and Beautiful Bobby.

I am a public school person and attended a public school. But, I have seen Prep, MRA, and JA play before, and I have seen MC, South Panola, Tupelo, Olive Branch, and a myriad of other 5A-6A teams. I have also seen 1A teams play before as well, and a lot of people in between.

And I can tell you objectively- both are similar in terms of the quality of the teams relative to the classification that they would be in. The styles are different. The public schools rely on their athleticism and speed more. The private schools rely on being very fundamentally sound and can typically run more complex schemes than the public schools.

I think the elephant in the room is this- people think that the private schools suck because it's mostly white players. No one wants to say it, but I will. There's no other rational reason to think that the private schools can't play with the public schools. The private schools actually beating the public schools on a 50/50 basis or so- I'm not looking it up, but the private schools are beating the public schools more than most people that they would. But, yet it doesn't seem to change opinions. Which blows my mind. It also doesn't matter how many players the private schools send to D-I. And it doesn't seem to matter that there are more black players than ever in MAIS.

Bobby Hall is an idiot. He knows that his days are numbered at MC. That's why he has brought in his successor. I have yet to meet a parent that has a son on the team- and I'm talking about starting on the team, so it's not "my son should be playing" syndrome- that likes him. If MRA has a good coach that's competent- and it sounds like they indeed do- he may lose players to MRA because people hate his guts. He's already losing players because of Germantown opening. He can't afford to lose a whole lot more. I wouldn't be totally shocked if MC has a losing season next year. As people have mentioned, they have a difficult non-conference schedule. I think they lose to Olive Branch and West Monroe. Starkville and Petal won't be easy either. I also wouldn't be totally shocked if they lose to Northwest Rankin and Clinton on the road as well. And then who knows which game Beautiful Bobby will piss away with his brilliant coaching and lack of preparation.

Coach66 said something about the team being soft- I think that's true to a degree, but I think a lot of it is also just outright arrogance which trickles down from the head coach.

MC has always struck me as somewhat soft.Hall's teams don't blow people off theball on offense the way some other teams (SP, West Point) seem to do, and I just don't think the overall athleticism at MC is on par with Olive Branch,Oak Grove, SP, Meridian and etc.

People seem to be forgtting the coaching aspect of it as well. Like you said, a MAIS team will often be more disciplined and run more complex schemes. Ricky Black, not Bobby Hall, is the best coach in the Metro Jackson area. Brad Peterson is a damn good coach as well.

With that said, MC would still beat any private schoolalmost every year. I just think that every now and then a private school team would come along that would give MC a good game.

When the big private schools leave the MAIS, which they will do eventually, they will fair pretty well in the MHSAA. They will really be able to recruit at that point (think Briarcrest, MUS, Christian Brothers, Brentwood Academy, Evangel Christian and etc.), and they will always be able to pay the money needed to hire a good coach. Hell, I'm still surprised MRA was able to take a coach away from St. Stanislaus ( I know Stanislaus is private but still). However, I should never be surprised at what Dueases is able to accomplish. I would have loved to see him get a college gig. He can coach/recruit with the best of them.

I'm a bit fuzzy on the actual years but Jack Carlisle brought over some real quality players from Jackson schools when he was ramping up Prep's program. Indianola had a couple of excellent teams with several college signees on the field each year.

I hope one of you gentlemen from that era of MPSA can shed some light.

Beautiful Bobby is feeling the nearing of "The End." Todd, you alluded to the huge migration of teachers and especially coaches from MC to Germantown...and that is not to be underestimated. To my mind, it shows a complete disdain and lack of trust for the Athletic Director and all of his mis-deeds.

I actually thought that Mike Kent would pull the plug after this year, but he will leave it to his successor. If Ronnie McGehee is elected as Madison County Superintendent of Education , then there just might be an interesting fire lit under the seat of "Bobby the Beautiful (and wife stealer)."

In defense of Bobby's calling into Bo Bound's show, what the hell do you want him to do when no one is showing him respect and his head hurts real bad. He just had to lash out.

Pearl was 4A, but you are right. It was the worst Pearl team I've ever seen. Pearl and Prep are now 2-2 in the series.
Newton didn't come close to the state final game. Theyclosest Newton has ever come is the quarterfinals. Preplost to Newton the next year.

Northwest Rankin and Clinton are the only two that could beat them, the rest of the district is a joke and the non-district schedule was a joke. In fairness, MC has beefed up the schedule for next season. Olive Branch, Starkville, Petal and West Monroe. Of course the district is still mostly a joke.

I will defend playing Canton- they are in Madison County after all. No excuse for Hattiesburg and the others.

But that's one of my gripes with Bobby Hall- his unexplainable scheduling. Why not play RIDGELAND, Brandon, Pearl, Terry or dare I say Jackson Prep or JA non-conference or schools that have a similar academic reputation as MC like Tupelo, Ocean Springs, and etc.

I do like the current schedule better- playing Petal, Olive Branch, and Starkville is more interesting to me than Picayune. Personally, I would have wanted no part of West Monroe, and I think MC will feel the same way. Really, MC should be playing Hoover and South Panola should be playing West Monroe.

I can't wait for Bobby Hall to quit or be fired. I have been a season ticket holder for 4 years. The man is "stewpid". His offense was beyond predictable. When his offense would sputter, then he would put Tobias in the wildcat to bail his *** out. He has a wealth of talent every year on the team, but he fails to get the most out of his talent. I am not surprised that Bobby would make foolish comments on the air.

It is better to be perceived a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt!!!!!!

He was a tremendously talented passer, at least at that level. Definitely a pocket QB, not an athlete-back at all. Shannon was an upper 3A school in a 1A-5A system at the time and Coach Mike Scott called on friends in the JUCO ranks to help him design an offense to take best advantage of his abilities. Started him at QB on the high school team in the new system (5 WRs, single setback) when he was still a freshman.

It's interesting this comes up on the Bobby Hall thread because, at that time (mid 90s), Hall had an unstoppable force going at Amory, another 3A team and a team in Shannon's district. Hall had some Amory teams in there that, at least from a defensive standpoint, could have well held their own with South Panola or any other. He had some defensive lines that could have flipped bulldozers. The records show he won 2 state championships, but his teams were deep in the mix every year there for a long time. In '95 Amory beat Shannon in the North Half Championship, then won a state title game the next week that Shannon could have won just as easily. Shannon and Romaro won state the next year, interestingly, after a 1-loss Amory team was excluded from the playoffs through a tie breaker. They had beaten Shannon 30-28 in the regular season, but almost inexplicably lost to Ripley by 12. Shannon had beaten Ripley by 12 and won the district and went on to win state.

Romaro's first start at Ole Miss was against Memphis and he looked like the guy we'd all watched in high school. Really a magic touch on the ball - always the right speed - always the right spot. It was my observation Romaro didn't become a superstar in college because, when something went wrong, like a pick 6, he would hang his head and that was it for the day. Maybe a Spurrier could have made him great, maybe not. I'm sure Cutcliffe did what he could but, by the time he was under that coach's care, Romaro had already been through the Tubberville pine box, post-egg bowl departure. Don't know if that made any difference. He'd have been a junior in Cutcliffe's first season I believe. Romaro broke several old records at Ole Miss that Eli then re-broke immediately thereafter, so he gets discounted a lot.

I'm not as familiar with Hall's history but I know, after he climbed the coaching ladder and left Amory, neither he nor Amory have had anything approaching the level of success they'd enjoyed together. Amory went from practically never losing to Shannon then to never beating them now. There were some years of inherited Hall-product success after he left, but that seems to be gone now. Probably Hall and Amory were the perfect storm together -- the town and the coach and the team were something straight out of Bissinger's Friday Night Lights. Amory's an insular little country town with a good gene pool that didn't focus on much more than winning the hell out of football games from the cradle on up, and Hall was just the right caliber of hardass to make it happen.

to the running backs, did his qb's attempt/game? His success has been BUILT ON THE RUNNING GAME! He has never developed a qb ever that proceeded to play qb in D1. That is the topic of the thread. He ***** on a HC from a private school because the host of the radio show says that he is a true qb coach, even though Hall can't spell QB! I don't give a 17 how many state championships he won at Amory or Louisville. He's in the big time of HS football, one of the largest schools in the state, great facilities, great fanbase, his choice of really good athletes, and he's been nothing but an under achiever!! He's a classless redneck that won some games in the old days, he plays a soft schedule year in and year out, and when it's time for the big game...folds up like a cheap chair. He's my selection for Douche of the Year.

Relative to their classifications, the MAIS schools can compete with the MHSAA schools. You're right thatgenerally the betterMAIS football playing schools are very fundamentally sound. That being said, I've seenmore than a few MAISfootball teams that are not.

With regard to complexity, I don't know if MAIS schools' schemes are any more complex. My HS alma mater ran a multiple formation offense. While attending games at my old school when I was a student, some MHSAA coaches and players were there & I overheard a coach saying that the scheme was complex which I don't think was the case because I knew the terminology in calling the plays was simple and understandable. I don't know if the fairly simplistic terminology is still the case generally some thirty years later.

As far as Bobby Hall is concerned, I think highly of his football smarts. I saw several Wayne County football games prior to his being coach there, and what he did with Wayne County in the short time he was there is still remarkable. I know their championships have been won under Marcus Boyles's tenure but Hall was a catalyst for change.</p>

and it may have been cause i haven't read every post, is that Williams at MRA was the runner up for the Germantown job. He said Hall told him after selection that he gave it to his long time assistant because "hedeservedit". Williams has a big chip on his shoulder about this. Said he would not mind someone getting the job over him cause he was a better coach or some other good reason, but to get passed over because the guy deserved it pissed him off. MRA is thrilled to have him and he as brought in some impressive asst.coaches.

Some general observations...

Most of this Bobby Hall hate has less to do with Hall's abilities as a coach and more to do with MSU fans being upset that he is an OM guy. That's pretty obvious from reading the thread.

Bobby Hall is an idiot for calling into the show if that's what happened. At the same time, there isn't much of an accurate description in this thread of what actually was said.

You'd think Hall was a coach with a terrible record based on the comments in this sandy ****** thread. All of this because he supposedly asked what this other coach has done to be considered a QB coach? If putting a bunch of great QBs in college is the gauge of success in MS HS football, who are some current coaches in MS that have put out multiple great QBs? MS isn't exactly a hotbed of passing offenses.

You have to admit, people in this thread tried to down play Hall's son's success, which is silly. He went to a smaller college. I assure you I've seen worse QBs at OM & MSU. The fact that he played at a smaller school has little to do with his abilities or success. Just admit it. He must have been groomed fairly well to be successful at that level.

Did Hall say he was a great QB developer in the interview? That can't be determined in this thread, but it is being implied.

Why does Hall keep getting good HS football jobs and winning if he is terrible ? And if he is winning, why does anyone (looking at you Thick) think that its null and void without a high powered passing game? I promise you there are more successful running teams in MS than passing teams.

Several people in the thread mention that MC is soft and not on par with Meridian, SP, Wayne County, Olive Branch, etc in terms of athletic ability or physicality. Then in the same breath, they blame Bobby Hall for losing to those teams. Let's be honest, a large part of the Madison area is a result of white flight. These aren't exactly a bunch of tough country or inner city kids playing for MC. Many of these kids would be in the "bump and giggle" league if they lived outside of Madison.

Todd mentioned that nobody wants to touch the skin color thing in regards to the perception that private schools suck. Yet it seems to be ok to say that private schools run "more complex formations and passing offense". I guess the perception is ok that all private school players are smart and have better coaching because they are over 90% white. Maybe they are more complex in Jackson and at some of the larger private schools that are in business for education. Get outside of those areas and there are a ton of private schools that are mostly run oriented offenses that are full of dumb *** redneck kids getting a poor education for the sake of segregation. The truth is that not all public schools are alike and not all private schools are alike.

Now bring on the insults and bashing.

  • If Will Hall had been 4 inches taller, he would have been very highly sought after. He set records at Northwest CC. And he set records at UNA. And won theequivalentof the D2 Heisman. He'll be a heck of a head coach one day as well.
  • Wouldn't Jason Campbell be considered a successful QB to come out of MS high schools?
  • Keeping Flora in Madison Central's area will go a long way to keeping talent at MC. If Flora had been a part of Germantown's area, it would have gutted MC.
  • Hall can be a good strategist. I don't doubt that. But a fault of his is sometimes refusing to make adjustments. He can be SURE that something should and will work, so he'll run the same running play over and over until it does. But he'll have to punt a lot of times in between.
  • At Amory and Louisville (and maybe Wayne County) Hall was able to work the local gatherings and whip up the enthusiasm for the football team. Football was really important to the community. Everyone bought in. Elementary school kids couldn't want to wear the high school jersey one day and play for the Panthers or Wildcats. In Madison, there are a lot more things going on that people aspire to do. So "selling" the program is a little more difficult at MC than other places.
  • MC probably has one of the highest budgets and best set of facilities in the state. So maybe the previous point shouldn't matter.
  • Why did Germantown hire a guy who has never been a head coach over a guy who's been very successful as a HS HC?

a few years ago. Yazoo (Kaleb Eulls) was 4A at the time and everybody, including myself (an MPSA alum), thought that MRA had no chance. From what I heard from my dad who went to watch Kaleb Eulls, MRA came out with 4-5 wide throwing all over the place. My dad said it looked like Yazoo County had never seen a forward pass before. Back in my day, MRA was a completely run-oriented offense. They had an awesome running back and close to nothing else. So I guess they play to their strengths, which is good football.

Since I'm only really inclined to follow my Alma mater, Prep, I don't think they have ever been seriously called (by a knowledgeable person) as having "more complex formations and passing offense." I know in 07 when they were really good, they were known (by coaches) as having lockdown defense and an excellent, very fast, scat-back RB.

But this all stems from race. Everyone assumes/knows that white kids are less athletic (on average) than black kids. Thereby, everyone assumes that in order for a majority white team to beat a majority black team, then there has to be an extraneous reason other then "they were just better at football". So people say stuff like "they run a lot of trick plays"..."more complex offense"...yada yada yada.

The MPSA flack reminds me a lot of the Boise St. flack from several years back until they started beating teams like Oklahoma.

Again, the fact is that most private schools don't run complex offenses. This is a figment of your imagination, just like thinking you are a baseball expert. You are asshurt over an OM guy coaching your former school.

Next time, try to refute a point, Mr. Band Nerd.

Here are some stats from Jackson Prep last year. Hardly a complex pass happy offense.

Those special education students you mentioned at SP blew Jackson Prep out of the water in almost every passing category.
