Jeremy Fowler<S>@</S>JFowlerCBS <SMALL class=time>34m </SMALL>Miss. State is considering not hiring an OC to replace Les Koenning. Mullen calls the plays. Bulldogs might hire special teams coach instead

I have no heartburn with this move (if in fact it happens). Thoughts?

I like the Special Teams coach. I don't know about not having an OC. I am afraid Dan might overload himself.

If he were to appoint one or two Assistant OC from those already on the staff it might sound better to me.

A SEC coach has to be a CEO a lot of times and I just worry that adding other duties might get heavy on the shoulders.

Gonzales - he and Mullen have worked together for about a decade now between MSU, Florida, UT, and BG.

That would be a A+ move IMO. I think we'll throw Billy G a title, and maybe a small raise, maybe the same for Hevesey, but we all know Mullen is the MSU offensive czar.

Special team/TE coach would be great.

Ha, Scott Stricklin say... "Dan, you can have all the god *%$# money for your assistants that you want, but for the love of god... fix the special teams situation pronto"

That was my first thought as well. As long as he has a good spotter to discuss play calls with then I like it.

Dan isn't a CEO coach. Les Miles is a CEO coach, and look who his assistants are. We just ponies up $1.2m for 2 years for a DC. He is the HC of the defense. Dan always has been the OC and will forever be the OC so I see no problems with this. Relieving him of special teams I think frees him up a lot more than having a puppet OC.

This special teams coach would also coach quarterbacks or would another coach be shifted to have that responsibility?

You would have to think they will have an additional responsibility outside of just special teams... almost all of them do...

I'd like a ST/TE coach. Sallach back to an office job. Then hire a QB coach/ace recruiter.

Definitely want a good qb coach. We have talent at the position, but a lot of youth

Agreed on the additional responsibility. I was wondering if it'd be a QB/ST coach or, as you mentioned, a ST/TE coach-- for example.

I doubt it's adding that much responsibility to his plate. The question will be can he rely on Gonzalez/Hevesy/??? to implement the offense during practice and can somebody on staff do as good a job as Koennig getting Mullen information from the booth. Even if Mullen has to take a more hands on approach with the offense during practice, if he has really been coaching special teams, being relieve of those duties could make it a wash.

HIs clock management was way better than what we have now....

He made mistakes with clock management, but he pulled a few games out of his ***, too!

What they do with the QBs will decide the route that they take.

I suggest hiring someone looking to make a quick jump with the title Assistant Head Coach. It could be a nice combination with a ST coach and free up some additional time for Mullen.

Nothing they do in the off-season, other than landing some solid recruits, will make me happier than hiring a ST coach. Mullen already calls the dang plays. Like others have said, as long as there is a spotter for him to discuss the decisions with then I am happy. Our ST play has got to be focused on and the head coach is clearly not the guy to do it right now.

I think we have the pieces of the puzzle, along with a favorable schedule, to have an above average year. Most on here agree. Add in solid special teams play and we could have a very good year.
