per Sunherald: Pegues a likely target for Saints.

Saints fan, what say you? Is he the best safety in the draft?...probably not. I will say this, as a Saints fan, I am not happy with DP as a first round draft pick. If they get him with one of their 2nd round picks that is fine. With their 1 pick they should either go, LB, DE, or CB...past player available type thing.

I would think the Saints could get a quality safety from the free agent pool. Can't really come up with any names at the moment, but I know there has to be a couple at least. I would personally like to see the saints draft a CB for their first pick.

but he'd be a good pick then. i think the saints still need to go corner in round 1. or a linebacker probably wouldn't hurt.</p>

I was pleasantly surprised with our CBs this year. Usama Young and Tracy Porter showed a lot of promise for a 2nd year guy and a rookie. Add that to Mckenzie and Gay. Drafting a safety would be a great idea, though i think we could get DP in the second round. But in typical saints fashion we'll 17 up our first round pick a la Robert Meachem or something.

Tracy Porter was doing a pretty decent job before he got hurt. I didn't really expect much from a rookie cb, but I would have to think if everyone is healthy next year cb won't be the least talented position on the field anymore.

However, I agree with someone else who said the Saints should probably go after a good DE. They need to get a good pass rush for a change. But hopefully, now that Gibbs and crew are gone, a new defensive scheme could help with that this coming year.

I wouldn't mind having Pegues. because I would like to have a State guy to root for on the team... I just don't know about spending your first pick to get him.

Pegues should NOT get picked up by the Saints in the 1st round

It would not be too smart for the Saints to pick up Pegues in the 1st round because they have a problem with the linebacker spot. Scott Fujita is good and Shanle is alright and Vilma is also good and young. But they don't have a true middle linebacker. Fujita and Vilma can do it but they are much better on the outside. Aaron Curry from Wake would probably be the best choice. But it's true what someone said about the DE situation. The Saints have a good defensive line when it comes to the running game, but it isn't the same story about the pass. I don't know how many games I watched this year and the Saints couldn't put pressure on the quaterback. So maybe the DB crew for the Saints isn't that bad it's just that they hold coverage for longer than 4 to 5 seconds. That is too much time for any quarterback in the league have. Also if the Saints are to pick up a DB in the first round it should be Pegues because he is athletic enough to play corner, strong safety, and free safety but they have more to worry about than their DB situation.

- Mississippi State safety Derek Pegues said he's talk to just about every team in the league this week. He's probably exaggerating, but a Browns scout asked him how he'd like to be a Cleveland Brown and Pegues said it would be fantastic. If Pegues drops to the fourth round or the Saints move up into the third round, they could give Pegues a look.

No way he goes in the first round. If he is there in the 4th I hope the Saints scoop him up. I'd like to see the Saints trade down to the late first round and pick up 2nd or 3rd round picks. Due to the Shockey and Vilma deals I think the Saints pick @ #14 and don't pick again until the 4th round.

Late first... Best defensive player on the board.

I gotta call BS on that. Vilma is a custom made MLB and was a god-send for the Saints last year.
