A discus is a discus, you throw it. A hammer is a hammer, you throw it. A shot is a shot, you put it. You don't "throw a shot put", anymore than you "throw a discus throw" or "throw a hammer throw".

The steel shot was originally used in golf back in Scotland.It was the exact same size and weight as it is today.The golfers would try to make their puts and almost always broke their putters.They got angry would pick up the shot and throw it.Since golf was so boring to many this became a sport in itself thus the shot put.It was pronounced like the golf term not like putting something somewhere.
