I missed it. I bet I was waiting in line at that dispensary over near Las Vegas Blvd and Garces St. when he was signing autographs.Got married in Vegas last April. Pete Rose was doing an autgraph picture thing at mall in Mandalay Bay. Pete did a photo with all of us in our bridal/groom shower. Great man
He prolly took that $100 bucks and blew it on a 1 hand. Hope he won
But he paid them with money made from gambling on baseball [laughing].Meh ..put him in. He’s paid his dues

I crack myself up.
He respected baseball so much that he chose to repeatedly break its ONE unpardonable sin.No one can refute how much Pete loved the game. IMO, he respected it too much to cheat.
I understand, but He bet on his own team....to win. Point is, those other players I mentioned actually did things that influenced the outcome of many, many games. He respected baseball so much that he chose to repeatedly break its ONE unpardonable sin.
Do you truly not comprehend that betting “on his own team...to win” is meaningless unless he bet an equal amount of money on each and every game?I understand, but He bet on his own team....to win.
I understand that, too. By virtue of not betting against his team sent messages to other gamblers. I am not attempting to minimize what he did and can't argue Giamatti's decision to ban him from active participation in the game. However, nothing he did minimizes his accomplishments on the field....while others who did unethical things that actually impacted games are in the hof. There is zero doubt that Pete should be in the hof.Do you truly not comprehend that betting “on his own team...to win” is meaningless unless he bet an equal amount of money on each and every game?
He didn’t
I just have very little sympathy for a guy who broke the one rule you know you're not allowed to break and then spent 15 years passing up every opportunity to tell the truth despite baseball begging him to just come clean so they could patch things up and put him in.
The guy still bets on baseball, for Pete's sake. He doesn't get it. He isn't sorry, he just can't have something he really, really wants for his own personal gain. He's a toddler with 4,000 hits.
Besides, it's not like anyone who cares enough to go to the Hall of Fame doesn't know who Pete Rose is. He's a bigger legend and story by *not* being in, if you're about the history of the game and all that.
Do you truly not comprehend that betting “on his own team...to win” is meaningless...
You either (a) DON'T understand it, or (b) you ARE attempting to minimize what he did -- otherwise, why would you continue to trot out the "but he only bet on his team to win" excuse as if it actually means something?I understand that, too. By virtue of not betting against his team sent messages to other gamblers. I am not attempting to minimize what he did...
Okay, let's put it this way. The issue is whether or not he should be in the Hall. Granted, Pete should not be active in the game because he bet on the game. BG was right. However, he should be in the Hall of Fame based solely on performance. You either (a) DON'T understand it, or (b) you ARE attempting to minimize what he did -- otherwise, why would you continue to trot out the "but he only bet on his team to win" excuse as if it actually means something?
He should be kept out of the Hall Of Fame based solely on being unrepentant and stupid. However, he should be in the Hall of Fame based solely on performance.
MLB now allows betting on baseball (not active players/coaches I'm sure). The new Commish has allowed it to be bet on by Vegas, others, etc. Their unforgivable sin is now promoted and allowed.I just have very little sympathy for a guy who broke the one rule you know you're not allowed to break and then spent 15 years passing up every opportunity to tell the truth despite baseball begging him to just come clean so they could patch things up and put him in.

Patriots were caught red-handed cheating multiple times and I don't hear an outcry (not specifically you OP) about them being banned and stripped of their status. Both will go in as 1st ballot HOFers.
Gaylord Perry is in the HOF and is well known for cheating during his days as a pitcher. Everybody in baseball knew he was cheating at the time.Pete Rose had numerous opportunities to come clean and consistently chose to lie about the entire situation unless he could have figured a way to profit from a situation he created.
So regardless of what MLB does to expand their revenue base, having baseball managers bet on their team is bad for business and I am sure there are enough people in power that will make sure he never gets in.

I am not defending Rose breaking a rule and lying about it. What he did was wrong. But why is his broken rule worse than Gaylord Perry's or Bonds, Clemens, McGwire, etc?
Cheating is cheating in my book, but nice rationalization.Because gambling risks violating the most fundamental principle that is shared across all competitive sports.
In any sport, an individual or team is competing against an opponent and is genuinely trying to win. All of a sport’s other rules build on that fundamental principle and simply establish how that specific game will be played and define what constitutes fair play.
So if I use PEDs to improve my hitting, I’m violating the rules of fair play. But I’m doing it in an attempt to win, so I’m not violating the most fundamental rule of the game.
Gambling introduces scenarios where players are no longer even trying to win the game, which violates the most fundamental rule of all competitive sports. That’s why gambling is a much more serious offense than PEDs or spying on an opponent’s practice, and that’s why it comes with more of a zero tolerance approach.
Pete knew this and decided to violate this rule anyway.
So what about teams that intentionally tank their season when they know they are not legitimate contenders in order to improve draft stock? Is that somehow different because it’s a team choice versus an individual? Pete was never caught throwing a game. I don’t know if he ever did or not, but I do think it should be on MLB to prove he did if they are going to punish him like he did.Because gambling risks violating the most fundamental principle that is shared across all competitive sports.

Which does not mean he made decision in regards to tactics or rosters that intentionally placed the Reds at a disadvantage to the opponent they faced.Pete Rose admitted to betting on baseball games...including placinging bets on his own team.
Try to keep up.

You think the Astros didn't violate any rules because they were trying to win? Houston didn't work harder or train more, they stole signs. They set up an elaborate system to CHEAT. If Rose was punished, they should be punished, Haven't heard of anyone on the Astros being punished except the Franchise, GM and Manager. No players unless something has happened lately.
I get you were saying, you think it's less wrong because the Astros were trying to win. It's a weird rationale, but it is what it is.If your take away from my post is that I don’t believe the Astros’ actions constitute cheating, then you need to re-read my post more carefully because you clearly didn’t understand it.
