Even in basketball, recruits and players come to UK not for our facilities, or Rupp, or even the passionate fanbase. That's all extras and the cherry on top. They come here to play for Cal, because he knows how to win, knows how to develop players, and get them to the next level.
The same is true for football. Sure kids grow up dreaming about playing for an Alabama or Notre Dame, etc. However, they go to a program to play for the head coach. The facilities, fanbase, stadiums, are all extra nice. Today, with the kind of money in college football, most power 5 schools already have solid facilities, stadiums, or are in the process of upgrading. It starts and ends with the coach. I think a lot of our recruiting success were predicated on Stoops selling the idea of let's build something special. I'll lead you to the promise land. However, we are even starting to see if the wins and buzz begins to fade, so will recruiting. We need on field success to continue the cycle of recruiting, excitement, etc. All of it depends on a competent coaching staff. 3 OC in 4 years isn't a recipe for success. Until we get signature wins and bowl appearances, it'll be tough for any coach to succeed.
