There comes a time in every upwardly mobile Black person’s life when they encounter someone who tells them how “well-spoken” and “articulate” they are.

It’s a backhanded compliment at best, but mostly it’s a put-down, because no matter how much you’ve studied, how nice your clothes are, or how impressive your body of work is, people still expect little from you (because: minority).
It's back handed if you take it that way. I use it towards younger people in general. Almost a wise beyond your years type of thing maybe. You can be mad at anything if you want to be i guess

I look forward to the day when the term Alpha Dog is a thing of the past .. Hell I cant recall anyone in the past 5 years I'd call a Alpha dog , we have had good players but its highly unlikely any freshman is going to come in here and be a true Alpha dog .. we get great players , we have great TEAMS , but this " who is the Alpha " talk needs to go away forever .

Black people take offense to it and it’s a legitimate gripe.
Some people will just take offense. I'm sure there's people in every race that could find an issue with it. If you take offense from a compliment i could care less what you think and there's not a hateful bone in my body when it comes to race. You're soft and fragile if that actually bothers you

The problem, is that people try to make everything about race. I'm sure all of us have said that about a "white person" oh goodness. However, when complimenting anyone who's isn't white, it's racist. Great job of posting that garbage and keeping racism alive, in.... your mind.

I drive for Checker Cab and gave the team a ride to Tolly Ho for burgers after the pickup games. Hagans was the alpha dog in the cab but is not a good tipper. Nick Richards is recovering from lasik surgery and was happy to be seeing shapes/colors. Sestina was kinda quiet and was reading a book on ancient Amazonian tribes. IQ had his support sloth with him....That was probably the biggest surprise for me. They were all real nice.

Just because ANY group or individual person of people gets offended by certain words THAT (in and of itself) DOESN'T ALWAYS make it legitimate.

Similar Ex: Some Native Americans are offended at the term “savages” Legitimate?

Yet, there is a Native American little league baseball team in my area with “savages”’as their team name

Yes, So do I... in no way is it a backhanded complement. Unless the receiver (or others) want to take it that way.
and it’s worse when those others legitimaze it.

If you really have to guard your language around ANYONE you probably need to change the way you talk. That stated, the soft bigotry (I am being nice) of stating Black people or any group takes offense to something stated is really dumbing down the group. How in the heck can you state that not knowing ALL Black people. What you stated is wholly more racist.

You could state "This black man finds it offensive." I can believe that. May be a good idea to quit grouping people in a race or color first before instructing others on how "groups" think. Your outlook will change.

Take this from a white dude that grew up in the slums of Detroit and thought he was black until I got my drivers license.

One black dude would cut you, another would kill you, yet another would feed you and yet another black dude would hug you. The white guys.......about the same....(Am I racist? I called all white people about the same.)

Wait, you’re not black? But you’re so articulate. Weird.

Hard for some white men to understand his even when most don’t say this to be racist. Comes from last white men who say it as a slight like if you call us boy even if you would call any man younger than you boy.

Only issue I have is when someone of another race tries to tell a different race what they should or shouldn’t be offended by. Same with men who tell women that. The offender has zero right to tell the offended what they should be offended by. Anyway back to basketball talk/debate so this doesn’t go down the wrong road

Black people take offense to it and it’s a legitimate gripe.

Only problem I see is I wouldn't call "us" anything. I may call you or him or her something. I may state that group is large or small or noisy or whatever but I mostly make statements to someone versus something (A group). I'd be much more likely to offend the person versus defend a race or justify a race.

Oh well, I'd start charging to go further....Be Good

I agree. I’m 40. Spent my whole life in Kentucky. Never once have I heard a white kid referred to as “well spoken.” My black friends cringe and make jokes about it. It’s usually an older white person saying well spoken. It likely began as a term of derision and eventually became accepted in the white lexicon as a complimentary term.

For example, my mother is 73. She isn’t racist at all. Raised me to love everyone regardless of race/gender/religion, etc. She says “well spoken” about Uk players all the time. Only the black players tho.

I think it’s generational. Boomers are really bad about it. I kind of understand. Her generation was the one that started their lives in a segregated society and lived through Civil Rights, integration and southern whites fighting it tooth and nail just to be dicks. Pitiful/inspiring time in our nation’s history. Glad I wasn’t alive. Old footage of the Civil Rights movement is really hard to watch. I just couldn’t imagine hating someone and believing they deserved fewer rights based solely on skin color. Seems dumb.

Maybe you need to expand your horizons, not all young people today no matter the race is well spoken. Its like English is not even a subject anymore in high school. But continue on trying to find things to complain about.
