Pike gets out-coached in every big game

2 years in a row our team was supposed to be built on defense and once we play a non-Big Ten team in a tournament setting we get absolutely exposed.

2021: Choked away a lead vs Houston by playing not to lose

2022: Gave up 89 points to Notre Dame

2023: Gave up 88 points to Hofstra in a home loss

Maybe it's time for us all to realize that the Big Ten may be a fraud of a basketball conference. Every time we play a solid non-Big Ten team in a big game we get exposed. I'm sure all the apologists will get mad at this but nobody could convince me they would actually rather have Pike than Speedy Claxton as our coach after tonight.

Every time? Our record against traditional B1G powers adding in PSU (wjho finishes 3 points short or AQ) is 6 wins and 4 defeats.

Purdue 1-1

Indiana 1-1

PSU 2-0

MSU 1-1

Mich 1-1

We were and are a middle of the pack team once Mag went down.

Guess Hodstra would be too.

Not sure if you read the post but I was talking about Non-Big Ten teams.

Pikiell is now 2-9 coaching in the postseason in his career and 0-4 in the NIT.

At Stony Brook he won the NEC regular season 5 times and the NEC tournament only once.

But it's dumb to be concerned we'll never win anything major with him as our coach. I guess just making it will always be good enough for some people

Not agreeing in totality, but RU fans wanted B1G time college sports but still have that small time mentality.

Pike obviously deserves some rope, but there are concerns and questions to be asked. No doubt about it.

Come on man. I know you're pissed. Hell, I'm pissed! But Pike IMO has done a terrific job thus far. Do I like everything about him as our HC? No. I hate his questionable offensive sets or lack thereof. I hate his substitutions at the most inopportune time. I also don't understand why he can't draw up simple inbounds plays or deal better with endgame situations. But with that said, before Pike we were **** and he and his coaching staff have given us a winning program.

Now, he needs to prove that he can take the next step. Hell, these kind of bizarre things happen all of the time in college BB. Do you remember when Coach K's 2nd seeded Duke team lost in the first round to a 15 seed? I do. Did Duke want to throw him out with the trash?

I think with a few days away from the debacle (and yes it was a debacle) we will all appreciate where this program was and where we're going.

If you only count the last game of each season as a “big game” you’re bound to be disappointed unless you expect him to win titles every year. Seriously illogical thought process you’ve got going on.

I think a case can be made that part of Pikiell's edge as a coach is that he gets more effort out of his team than most, and it is probably true that that edge goes away in the NCAA tournament when everybody is giving max effort.

I watched coaches like Eddie Jordan, Fred Hill and others, Did the season end poorly. Yes but he has done a terrific job. Offensive players we need to develop. Selection Sunday for me was depression Sunday.

He may just be a very good program and culture building guy and that's his high end.
It's obvious he needs improvements with end game and in game strategy.
The 24/25 season will be the litmus test for Pike.

Next season is a rebuild.the season after with Ace, he gets very little to no rope.

I'm just wondering at what point are we actually allowed to have high expectations. Pike is in year 7 at Rutgers now and people constantly bring up how bad we were before he got here when any valid criticism is brought up. How long is that going to last? In 5 years when Pike is in year 12 are people still going to bring up how bad it was with Eddie Jordan.

next year needs to be a reload, not a rebuild, college sports windows are too short, and with the portal now, the mindset for any team with a pulse needs to be reload.

Rutgers started strong against B1G Ten competition. Later on opponents concentrated on stopping Cliff and Cam from scoring and the downward slide started and only got worse after Mag got injured.It was a rare game when Rutgers had solid performances on offense and defense.

Don’t compare Pike and Ru to Duke and Coach K please. I think he has a much stronger list season track record so one loss gives him a pass.

Pike has NO record in the lost season.
3 years ago in the tournament Pike choked away the win against Houston . Go watch the game and watch Pike go to essentially four corners WAY WAY too early hopes his D would close
2 years ago play in game . Step back from previous year got out coached against Brea.
This year 8 games left ranked team 2nd in the big ten and melted down to being left out of the dance . Then a number 1 overall seed and a home loss to Hofstra .

The program has gone backwards 3 years now and this season is an absolute failure.

No one bring up recruits because until they step on campus they are not here. If your Dylan what do you do?? Just watch RU not make the tournament and get embarrassed in the NIT. Duke will be playing in the tournament.

These losses matter

I didn’t particularly think it was Pike’s finest coaching moments. Definitely reminded me of ND game. Paul did nothing during game and is not athletic enough to play the type of game we did.

This is a fair take.

That plus the big ten stinks and theres not exactly world beaters in the conference so when you get your guys up to play you can play with almost anyone
