This is mostly just my personal preference, but to me the midweek games should be where you groom the guy that is going to be your weekend starter for the next year(s), and should mostly be freshmen guys. Then you use the older and more experienced guys on the weekend when you play tougher teams. A guy like Hazelwood could be very effective for long relief on the weekends, but instead we largely waste him against weaker opponents. On the other hand, we could have Marsh or Jordan or any number of our freshmen pitchers going against teams that don’t hit as well and they would build confidence and adjust to college hitters. If they begin to pitch really well then maybe you decide to move them to the weekend as a relief pitcher (if they can handle the mindset change), or if you have a guy like Ramsey this year that is struggling on the weekend then you can move them back to midweek and get their groove back. I imagine that Belanger might change Hazelwood to the weekend pretty soon. I’m not sure he will have a choice soon.
