Pitching question

Why is the coaching staff starting arguably the second best starting pitcher and the one with the second most experience ( Hazelwood in both cases) on a weekday game? Looks like he should be the Saturday, or at least the Sunday starter. Makes little sense to me. He can't do much worse than what we have going on the weekends now.

I think the plan was to start him on the weekends, but he was sick opening weekend and it’s just played out that way.

This is mostly just my personal preference, but to me the midweek games should be where you groom the guy that is going to be your weekend starter for the next year(s), and should mostly be freshmen guys. Then you use the older and more experienced guys on the weekend when you play tougher teams. A guy like Hazelwood could be very effective for long relief on the weekends, but instead we largely waste him against weaker opponents. On the other hand, we could have Marsh or Jordan or any number of our freshmen pitchers going against teams that don’t hit as well and they would build confidence and adjust to college hitters. If they begin to pitch really well then maybe you decide to move them to the weekend as a relief pitcher (if they can handle the mindset change), or if you have a guy like Ramsey this year that is struggling on the weekend then you can move them back to midweek and get their groove back. I imagine that Belanger might change Hazelwood to the weekend pretty soon. I’m not sure he will have a choice soon.

Surprised about Ramsey...thought he was going to be a dandy! And he still may.

Ramsey needs to develop those secondary pitches and get them over for strikes and that will increase his success. Heck, the increases everyone’s success. lol

The few times I watched Ramsey and Hazelwood last season I thought they would be solid this season.
If weather is good gonna try and make tomorrow game versus Jawja. GO CATS!
Really disappointed with broadcasts and game tracker, UGH!

Are we to the point where we cant really throw off vs midweek, need to get wins and have a much higher likelihood to get a W with him in a midweek game than in a wkd game...instead of dropping the midweek and wkd game, may want to grab the midweek game?

I'm sure he will have time later in the year for some SEC experience - but it could be that they just want to scratch some wins across here early or this thing could get really really ugly.

We are 0-7 against P5 schools being outscored 99-23 so nothing is good right now and we have actually done better OOC than last year , but the schedule hasn't been as tough. So, all wins are good, but at this point i don't have much hope of making the SEC tourney which will automatically keep us out of the ncaa field. The biggest problem with watching this team how can you even get remotely excited about next season.

I mean, in some ways, if you don't have a freshman that can win you midweek games then you're probably in trouble long term.

Thisx1000. The reason why 2017 was such a good year was Zach Thompson was our mid week guy. And he followed the progression into a weekend guy last year even though he was hurt. That’s why teams like UofL, Vandy, Florida and others are so good. They have the pitching.
