They played Down and won the 1a state title in 2008 and played down again in 2009 and lost, ending a 8 game winning streak by the 1a west.

Smokey mountain conference on here 24 hours a day beating there chest about this and about that, ummm no comment there as I am actually a fan of mountain football. You can talk about state titles if you like , props there. We were playing a few classifications up then. Northwest 1a football ain’t been to shabby either I give ole pryles a hard time but those elkin teams were special. VERY SPECIAL!!! That 2019 East Surry offense was the best that I ever seen play 1a football. The 2008 and 2009 bears were real good to. But even after all that the comment was about Murphy and Robbinsville from another post, simply put and reads like this. The real question should be — what’s the bears record against these two head to head. That should put that conversation to bed

ddawg74, I believe the 2019 East Surrey offense was on par with any high school offense i have ever seen regardless of classification. 5 D1 players is 5 D1 players regardless of classification. While their defense was very good, that is where the 08 and 09 Bears head to head would have made it a great comparison.

Naw...Chris Leaks Independence Squads..that won 7 straight big 4a titles..is where the comparsison needs to stop honestly..we're talkin well over 100 games won in a row..breaking national winning streak records along the way...East Surry was amazing...but no comparison...

I don't know what Mount Airy's record is against Robbinsville but it's 3-2 against Murphy. Murphy won in '96 and '05 and MA won in '97, '06 and '17. So no I wouldn't say that puts anything to bed, sounds pretty close to even money to me.

That cardinal group was special. 5 d1 players in 1a football is unheard of. One of the best football teams I ever seen play. Boaz should be under center next year for the heels.

Mbd fan you know where I stand, no knock on the dawgs. This year shows how great gentry was. Bears have a whole lotta talent for a few years in the future. If healthy this group can run the table in a west bracket that is tougher than any year one can recollect.

Mt. Airy is 7-5 all time against Smoky Mountain Conference.
vs. Murphy - MA leads 3-2
vs. Robbinsville - MA leads 1-0
vs. Swain County - Tied 2 apiece
vs. Cherokee - MA leads 1-0
vs. Hayesville - Hayesville leads 1-0 (1993)

I honestly think a healthy Mount Airy is the team to beat this year, only about 3 teams I could see potentially knocking them off but I would probably favor Mount Airy in all 3 games.

With that said no gdawg I don't think this west is anywhere close to the west brackets Mount Airy and Murphy played in during the late 90's to mid 00's with prime Cummings, Thomasville, Albemarle, Maiden, Hendersonville, Starmount, Graham, etc. 1A ball probably won't ever be on that level top to bottom again.

Mountains are down this year, I can't speak for the future of Mitchell and Heritage but there won't be another SMC team that's a true title contender until Robbinsville's current sophomores are seniors in 2023.

That's part of it but not as much as people think, Murphy losing their d-coordinator and o-line coach has hurt them as much or more in regards to this season.

Gentry got out at the right time, Murphy just doesnt have the level of talent coming up and coming through that they've had the last 12 years. Gentry was great no doubt about it but he had a lot of talent at his disposal most of the last 12 seasons.

The talent coming up from JV the last 2 years showed Murphy was about to hit a dry spell. This year's team would've been very good in my opinion with last season's coaching staff but after that there was going to be a drop off no matter who was coaching in my opinion.

Who were the 5 D1 players on East Surrey team that year. Are you talking about both Boaz's both gosnells and the kid from Tennessee or that went to Tennessee?

TA McLendon and that 2001 Albemarle team was the best 1A team I saw. I will say I didn’t see any 1A games or SMC teams until I saw Swain in 1988 and not many 1A teams until Starmount went 1A in 1997. (disclaimer)

The Gosnell brothers, Boaz and Washington is 4. I don't know who the fifth one is either, Stevens and Mosley were PWO's.

They came into that game hungry and determined definitely one of the greatest performances I've ever seen I've never seen a tarboro defense gets shredded like that

The first 8 years after the 1a 1aa split, Elkin won 4 titles and Swaim County won 4.

Preferred Walk Ons are guaranteed a roster spot and are recruited. Just means no scholarship. Those with PWO's are given the future opportunity to earn a scholarship. So, if they are on a D1 team, they went D1. They count.

You realize Boaz isnt listed on UNC depth chart for the QBs.Howell,Criswell,and Maye. Got long way to go

And don’t forget if you go to a FCS school it’s also D1. It isn’t just FBS.

Gosnell brothers as over rated as they come. Older one looks scared to death at UNC. Boaz won't ever touch the field at UNC. Wish they would have went smaller schools to get more playing time. All player's you listed will back in their home towns soon enough.

As always this turned into a smc thread or a bash MA thread again. Let's get back to the refs blowed the call at Starmount and blew the whistle to stop the play.
