Do you remember much about the dominant Chilhowie squads from the early 70s? They put many an A-H district squad out the playoffs during that time! Natty B, PM, Rockbridge, JR and Riverheads to be exact lol.

Do you remember Yogi Arnold from R.B. Worthy?

Yes, I remember about those days of the 70's. Arnold was a darn good ball player for
Saltville. As I recall, he teamed up with another player named Cregger, and was one heck
Of a backfield. I remember when Clintwood and Saltville fought to a 3-0 score, with
Clintwood squeezing out the win over the Shakers in the Region C playoffs.
I recall Coach Cummins coming to scout Saltville from Clintwood. I was at that game,
When Coach Cummins came rolling inside the stadium in the Big Green Cadillac. Talk
About intimidating a group, everyone knew who was in the house.

I've heard about that Cadillac! He pulled up in that thing at VMI in '78 according to some of the BV oldtimers LOL!!!

Clintwood had some very dominating teams in those days. This is no joke, but Clintwood
Was so good, their first team would only play the first half. The first team would change
Into street clothes to start the 2nd half, and sit in the home bleachers the 2nd half....no
Kidding about that. Not so sure how that would go over in today's world.
I remember a lineman they had, Mooney was his name. Chilhowie played them at Clintwood
That Saturday afternoon. Mooney was a BIG bruiser of a man, and our Coach told our
Kids that they ( Clintwood ) had Mooney in a cage before the game, because he was so
Mean, they were punching him with a stick to keep him under control.
Ah, those were the days......What Coaches would do and say, to see if their squad was ready
To play, or wanted to play..............

Richard Carter would make a fast guy look slow ! Remember I could not get a hand on him .
Longtimer must be old as dirt to remember all that stuff ! lol Nice bit of history ! I must be much younger than him .

The Green Wave from Clintwood. They no longer exist....consolidated with Haysi to
Form Ridgeview, that sets on top of a mountain in Dickenson County. Coach Cummins
Got that Cadillac by " friends " from the community of Clintwood after they won one of
Several State titles. That Caddy was so green, you could see it coming for miles, and you
Knew who it was, Coach Cummins. That car was all over SWVA, and probably most of
The state.
A player by the name of McFall was their Tailback in those days. He started for about
3 years, and set several records for rushing at that time, even though he didn't play the
Entire game. Coach Cummins became a legend in the coal fields. What ever Coach
Cummins wanted, Coach Cummins Got. Coal was king in those days, money for the
Football teams was not a factor, and a lot of success was built on coal money, and with
Coal miners son's.......a tough group to deal with on Friday nights. There was a lot of
People who did not think about working the " hoot owl " shift in those days.

To answer some questions that have been posted......Casto's first year at Riverheads was 1996 and he went 0-10. The next year he went 3-7. The next year he went 8-3, including a frustrating playoff loss at Strasburg. Then came back to back 10-0 regular seasons. The 1999 season ended with a home playoff loss to Strasburg, but the 2000 season remains the high-water mark for the program.....a perfect 14-0 record and the first of RHS' three state titles.

As for that 2004 season in which RHS finished 4-6......that was a season of close games. Two of the wins were by a touchdown or less and three of the losses were. So if you are a half-full person, you could say they "could" have been 7-3, but they could also have been 2-8.

The "worst" season since then was 2008, when they finished 7-4, but since then, RHS has won at least ten games every year, if you include playoff victories. To put that another way, that means eight straight years (including the current season) in which they won either 9 or all 10 regular season games. If they can pull off the win at Stuarts Draft on Friday, they will have put together three consecutive unbeaten regular seasons for the first time in school history.

Can't recall the name Mark Davis . Only thing that really stands out is Carter coming out after the first half dressed in street clothes ! Very ugly game !

Lol was that the 56-8 game? Or the 38-0 game?

Mark was the younger brother of Steve Davis, who went on to play for the Steelers during their dominant 70's period. Sadly, Mark died while still in high school. Not sure what the circumstances were.

Sorry, getting the years mixed up without going back and looking at records..

In '71 Lexington won 56-0 so that may have been the same game, that was also the same year that TA won 75-12. Rough few year stretch for the Gladiators, but as Longtimer said, it paid off once they got into the A-H district. Hard to believe R.E. Lee was playing AAA at the time, Preacher Maddox was the Man according to the Staunton paper.

Ron Ball coached at the old Natural Bridge High and was a good coach. Do not know the years he was at N.B.

I take it you're a James River fan? I have a bit of knowledge on the old schools there in Botetourt County, pre-consolidation days.

Cool! As soon as I can figure out how to send private messages on here I will send you James River's complete all time scores back to 1959.

I lived in Buchanan when I was little, was there during the 1985 flood, lived on Lowe Street, a very apt name..lol

I'm not sure of the years either but when I was in high school in the early to mid 80s he was the coach at Stuarts Draft. He now has Alzheimers and it's a shame, as it is with anyone. He's a good guy.
