Poll Question regarding our school's reputation

The Hump was insane last night. It was loud, obnoxious to the opposing team and their fans, bottles were thrown, I mean it was nasty and a tough *** place to play last night. Football, we have the cowbells, but other thanthat I wouldn't say we're really obnoxious. I can't remember us ever throwing bottles on the field although this past football season there were several times we easily could have.

Here's my question. Should we as fans make every game at the Hump, Davis Wade, and DNF as loud, obnoxious, and nasty as possiblefor every game and not care about our reputation so opposing teams are thinking, "Man I do not want to play in Starkville ever again or I'm going to hate to play there again." OR should we care about our reputation and be respectful for the other teams, but still try to be loud at athletic events at the Hump, Davis Wade, and DNF. LSU is an example of fans not giving adamn about the public interpretation of their fans, but it has worked out well for them in terms of their home sporting events being a tough place to play. Granted the rest of the SEC and nation hates them, but I don't think we have much fan support outside of our Alumni, students, and general fans across MS.

The cut outs of girlfriends,the cut out of the guy wanting to choke Calipari, the cell phonecalls, cussing in chants are examples of being nasty. The bottle throwing shouldn't happen even though I bet it would again if we got hosed like we did.

I'm all for having a raucous environment. I think it's the fan's job to make opposing teams DREAD playing on their home court.

However, lines have to be drawn and one was crossed last night. Excluding the last 30 seconds of the game, I think our fans did a fantastic job of creating an atmosphere that was to be feared. However, once the bottles and cups started flying, things got out of hand.

So, bring on the signs, bring on the chants & cheers, but don't EVER throw things on the court/field or at opposing players, coaches, fans, etc.

and I think it's somewhere on this side of being compared to West Virginia. Seriously, Mississippi can only make fun of a few states as being more redneck/backwoods/hillbilly, so we really shouldn't give that one up.<div>

I said no throwing of the bottles and cups. Everything else should be encouraged. I promise you Ole Miss fans were calling Cousins trying to act like us to make us look bad. They had the KKK on their campus. I don't think we have stooped to their level. They also threw stuff on the field against Alabama at a football game, so MS will never have a great reputation so you might as well and accept that.

I know the Hump won't be that loud everynight, but I sure wish it could. That was as loud as a Duke game I'm sure. But they get their homecourt like that every game. Basketball school is the reason behind that I guess. </p>

It could happen at any school in the country, and to deny that simply makes you look more foolish than usual. And you would have to let the KKK come if they wanted to, it's not like our fans were in the group. Hell, one was an Auburn fan.

OP I just said I'm sure some called. I'm not saying half was you guys or 1/4th of the calls were yall, it could have been as little as 10 Ole Miss fans. If Ole Miss was texting and calling another player I'm sure some MSU fans would act like Ole Miss fans too. Anyway, this thread wasn't supposed to go this way. It's about whether WE AS STATE FANS want to make MSU athletic venues tough places to play regardless of our rep like an LSU or Alabama. Please stop talking about Ole Miss in this thread in terms of the phone calls. I'm sorry I called you guys out, now let's move on.

It was the United States Air Force not Mississippi State that drop the "N" Bomb and I will deny it and it doesn't make me more foolish than usual. Do anything possible with the exception of causing physical harm, or making racist or sexual remarks to the opposing teams. Once people realize we are doing those types of things, it will hurt us way more than it will help us. All of those things will hurt our recruiting and therefore hurt our team more in the long run.

at least by how the nation views the state. We are viewed as a backwoods third-world country by most of the nation (and some areas are actually that). Its not like we have some kind of "best kept secret" status of actually having an intellectual and affluent society.

trust me this won't be the last time this happens - students camped out the night before and many at 9:30 am yesterday...a great environment was created and it was all taken away because we were given awful officiating.<div>

It's not terrible phrasing. I clearly stated that being nasty and obnoxious is doing everything that we did except throwing the cups (cussing in chants, cut outs of players, etc.). Being respectful and being loud is just yelling the whole game.

Third World Country?
About 5 years ago our church was getting together a mission trip to Mendenhall, MS to help some poor black families refurbish their houses, at the behest of a former NFL player for the Seahawks who had a mission there.

In recruting members for the trip, one of our pastors actually said, from the pulpit in front of many hundreds, that he'd heard that the conditions in Mendenhall were as bad, or worse, than many 3rd world countries. One of our young single female members, an Ole Miss pharmacist from Mendenhall, soon left our congregation. I can't blame her, since Simpson County is one of my "ancestral" homes.

We have locales in Huntsville that are as bad or worse than the pleasant town of Mendenhall.
So, that's yet more Alabama arrogance.
Imagine how we are stereotyped in the other states.

The mississippi delta is damn near a third world country in some parts. My roots are from the delta and it's one of my favorite places in the world, but that place would be a complete culture shock to even some fellow mississippians.

Our reputation is fine, the announcers acted like they have never seen any of it before! Even Calipari... really? No really..? The Ninja apologizes and quotes from Dykes saying we got a black eye.. Black Eye lol. I hope the Ninja doesn't go to a few baseball games or talk to Albert Belle soon. Really, a few bad apples at every university, kids will be kids, we've all been there. Although it just feels like to me, that LSU and Ole Miss have some how magically payed off the media with all their barrages after a few football games I have attended and seen. I remember in 98 at Oxford after our huge win, in the end zone bleachers, having to save a 4 year old from getting hit in the head with a whiskey bottle. Seeing a father grab his young son and turning his back to shield him from being decked as they try and leave, didn't hear the outrage then I hear now.

That's exactly right This stuff happens all the time. The espn guys would have said a lot less if anything If it would have been at Kentucky and their team got 17ed and they threw some stuff on the court.
My biggest problem with it all is that they didn't hit the damn ref!!! These SECOND officials in all sports need to be held accountable for their horrible calls. The commisioner won't do anything so who will? Don't throw the stuff unless you got good aim.
Now the text messages and supposedly racial slurs are a little much but so what ya know. Its a free country and its not the schools business. That is personal not institutional. I for one don't give a rats *** about our reputation as long as we win. Do you honestly think the rest of the country even think about us and much less care about how we act.
