Could go along with that before they moved the WTVA tower to Houston. I'm so far N in the state, Houston feels North Central for sure****Do you get WTVA over the air?
Yes=NE Mississippi
No=East Central Mississippi
Farming is a rough profession theses daysIs the delta losing population ? I'm a little surprised an agriculture school doesn't have more grads living in the most fertile farmland in Mississippi.
So 1/2 of the city of Gulfport as well Diamondhead and the Kiln are not considered the Coast? Don't think so.The geographic center of MS is in Leake County outside of Carthage. Horizontal line running East/West through that point also aligns nicely with the southern tip of the Delta.
I think there are 8 regions. 5 rural, 3 urban.
I’d define any area (other than Rankin / Hinds / Madison) that fall between the central point in Leake County and I-20 to be Central MS.
3 counties above are Jackson MSA.
Any areas south of I-20 and north of I-10 (again, excluding Rankin / Hinds / Madison counties) is South Mississippi.
South of I-10 is the coast….pretty straightforward.
Everything north of Carthage and southeast of the Trace is Northeast MS.
Everything north of Carthage, northwest of the Trace, and east of the Delta is North MS….excluding DeSoto County.
DeSoto County is Memphis suburbs.
The Delta - pull up Google satellite image and see if you’re there or not. Again, pretty straightforward.
Actually I need to revise my previous post.That ship sailed decades ago....and it's never coming back.
Pelahatchie has a Wardssome would define any town with a Wards as south Mississippi
Spoken like someone who knows very little about Tupelo. Oktibbeha, Lowndes, and Clay tags are common there. They aren't exactly in Tupelo's orbit, but they aren't exactly out of its influence either. They are all MUCH closer to Tupelo than they are to Jackson or Birmingham. They are also closer to Tuscaloosa.Actually I need to revise my previous post.
Tupelo Metro, Golden Triangle Metro, Meridian Metro and Hattiesburg Metros are all pretty much equal and operate pretty independently of each other. So not fair to say MSU is in Tupelo's orbit. It's in its own. If you can't find it there, people are generally headed to Birmingham or Jackson.
That divided nature of all our towns in yet another reason none of them see explosive growth. So really.....it's just Jackson and Gulfport-Biloxi, and Gulfport-Biloxi is a stretch because most of those people will go to New Orleans or Mobile for their shopping, entertainment, etc.
Agree except I’d take north south line down to 82You can really split some hairs here but I imagine it is up to one's own influences. I'm from the GTR, I'd say that's central ms per the choices. But really the GTR seems more connected to Tupelo and that is NE MS.
My imagine always thinks central ms as highway 8 to I20. Above 8, north. Below 20, south.
East of I55, is Mississippi. West of I55 is some weird desolate place.**
Think it depends on whether you're from the coast and how old you are. If you're 60, the coast stops at I-10. If you're 80, it stops at the south'ish side of the backbay/bayou/river depending on what part you're in.So 1/2 of the city of Gulfport as well Diamondhead and the Kiln are not considered the Coast? Don't think so.
Ok, the coast can simply be all the counties touching the ocean.So 1/2 of the city of Gulfport as well Diamondhead and the Kiln are not considered the Coast? Don't think so.
Then my house is in Northern East Central MS, but I can just about see Southern Northeast MS.HWY 82 is the usual southern boundary.
Well I was north of I10 but I spent so much time on Biloxi beach and in the bars along 90 that I was about the trashiest of coast trash. I sure do miss it sometimes. I was there pre-casinos though.Ok, the coast can simply be all the counties touching the ocean.
I guess I was drawing too much from the hard line coast rats at MSU that would tell anyone with a pulse that everything north of I-10 sucked.
So does Welcome Y'all to Mendenhaw.Pelahatchie has a Wards
I wish you were right. I wish Tupelo had 500K and was a semi-destination city. Maybe it will be in 100 years.Spoken like someone who knows very little about Tupelo. 150k already there every working day.I wish you were right. I wish Tupelo had 500K and was a semi-destination city. Maybe it will be in 100 years.
I would have bet $2,000 you were gonna grace us with your superior intellect in this thread!!Only thing about MS that is consistent is that it's inconsistent. MS share allegiance with out of state shlt too much. No one will agree most likely, on any map of MS culture.
The only places that are truly unique are the Coast and the Delta. Coast shares allegiance with New Orleans/Mobile as far as economy and lifestyle. Delta represents MS in many ways. Poor and split, with half of it anchored by Jackson and the other half by out-of-state (Memphis).
How the hell did we let TN have Memphis anyway?
I agree. But GTR, Meridian, Hattiesburg all have near 100K in the vicinity/metro/micro/however you want to put it. Nothing really special. All peers.150k already there every working day.
Highway 26 would be a good delineation line for the coast…So 1/2 of the city of Gulfport as well Diamondhead and the Kiln are not considered the Coast? Don't think so.
