He misevaluated some kids and has a team that doesn't fit together. A lot of kids he thought would be knock down shooters have shot like ***. IMO, if he had ONE dead eye shooter, this team might look completely different. The team does have a chance though, and that part is on him to pull off. I think he MUST shorten his rotation to 8 players and 8 only barring injuries or foul trouble. And he needs to start the best 5 and ride them more
We all know what he should do and yet he still won’t do it. That’s the problem.

If we miss the tourney this season, his resume is two seasons with 10+ losses and a sweet sixteen appearance where he got spanked by a team we beat twice in the regular season.

I think he gets next year unless this season turns into a complete disaster. Like we don’t even get the NIT invite level bad.

I think it’s fair to be pretty skeptical at this point.
If you aren’t skeptical, you’re an imbecile

No you are Pope hater because you said nobody thought we had a chance to compete for anything. If you thought that before we got decimated by injuries, then you were just a Pope hater.
They’re are several here that come out after every loss no matter who the coach is. They are looking to bathe in anger. Its who they are so don’t bother to fight with them as you’d move to the other side of the bar if they moped in beside you.

Kentucky the laughing stock of college basketball, only empty seats in Rupp and low TV ratings will make a difference to the administration.

Pope at the very least set 20 million dollars on 🔥

I was being lenient with him because everyone was injured but you had two weeks!! everyone's healthy and you're not starting lowe???? Pope has got to go sooner than later. He's got to go after this year period, no third year, he's not gonna change anything next year. I thought coaching would be a strength - it has dipped significantly this year, dumbass didn't wanna guard the three till too late.

The only way he’s getting fired mid season is if it comes out something off the court is happening.

The only way he doesn’t get one more season is if we’re a level of bad that I don’t foresee.

People can whine all they want, but this would literally be how it worked anywhere else in the country.

Coming from somebody who wasn’t happy about the hire from the beginning.

Good grief it's sad to look at the state of Kentucky Basketball at this point. Pope was clearly not the correct hire from the beginning. He didnt even really accomplish anything at BYU, and now look at BYU since he left. It's funny how BYU can suddenly recruit now. Arkansas is now in a much better position than we are, with no hope in sight for us to return to the glory days. Pope is clearly out of his league. It says a lot when fans don't even care to tune in to watch the games. Of course it's not all on Pope, as Barnhart is the one that panicked on the hire and completely fumbled the assignment. There were so many other options we could have pursued, but he went the homer route. What now? Where do we go from here? I think it starts with cleaning house, from the top down.
Will Barney ever get anything right??

I don’t think anyone actually expects UK to fire pope after this season no matter what
Oh no, there is actually some UK fans that think a coach should get fired before he has even completed his 2nd season. We actually have bat **** crazy fans that want any coach that doesn't get to a FF in their first year fired.

Oh, I've already been told on a couple of other sites we are crybabies over here.

Those who accept mediocrity don't belong in BBN, at least on the basketball side. I'm sick of making excuses and I won't anymore.

We are Kentucky. We earned out status and position. We've had FIVE coaches win titles here. No other program has that claim.

We have the second most titles. We have the most wins (that gets torpedoed this year if it keeps up); the lead will be 7 after today.

I'm tired of saying this is ok. It isn't. And I won't apologize for having high standards. Not anymore.
Yeah, Pope is all talk and no performance. He says all of the right things, but can't deliver on any of the promises despite having the highest paid team in college basketball. He either can't coach or can't judge talent or maybe both.

Barney has actually gotten several hires right. The problem is he rides them too long

Got Cal right- and then gave him that unforgivable contract
Got Stoops right- rinse and repeat above
Got Skinner and Mangione right- they've done really well and decent
Got Brooks right it seems
Hopefully got Stein right

The other issue is he's had some awful clunkers in addition to bad contracts

Got Joker- awful hire
Got Elzy- risky hire- didn't work out
Got Pope- risky hire- trending wrong way

John Calipari went to the Elite Eight in year one.. In year 2 he went to the Final Four.. Year 3.. He won a National Title. Not much of an argument

I’ve seen enough bad coaching. He can’t coach defense. Sign me up for the “fire him before completing the year” team. You have to be pretty bad for me to say that —- I’m as patient as any —- this dude needs walking papers.

That's a bit of hyperbole. We're getting run of the court by any team with a pulse and it's not getting better.

NIL has changed the game too.

You don't have time to invest 3-4 years in a guy. They either 1- bolt for a better paycheck or 2- don't want to wait to start/contribute etc.

In addition, with so much upheaval you can't miss on prospects and compete. So yes, with massive money comes expectations of at least being competative.

I don't recall seeing ANYONE on here wanting Pope gone last year- at least no one of long term merit.

But this mess we are in is unacceptable. You can't in this day an age when you can build a roster anyway you want given the right amount of time/money and be this uncompetitive. Especially here.

Not sure why everyone is freaking out about firing him. I like Pope, but he was given a fair opportunity and he is floundering. Give him another year. If he fails cut him lose. Try again.

For those that say fire him now, well, Mitch won't do that.

You were attacked because you openly root against the team. You would rather the team suck and say you were right than have them do well. This is not a good basketball team, but it doesn't mean Pope is a terrible coach. Pretty much every HOF coach has had a poor season. This is Popes one. A second will do it for him. But not one
Lol ok buddy, whatever you say

I have a feeling fans will run him out of town if he doesn’t resign if he misses the tournament, especially with all the hype that surrounded this team before the season.

Pope's third year will determine whether he stays or goes. Aside from that, if NIL is not capped UK will never be great at the two major sports moving forward. KY is too poor compared to the other major programs. We also need to address the issues with JMI.

We should all be skeptical and worried. Pope just hasn't underperformed enough to warrant firing yet. You can't change coaches every 2 years.

A third year only extends our misery and pisses off everyone even more in the process, especially with no recruits coming in next year. We’re literally forgoing the inevitable for the sake of “fairness”, aka Pope needs to make more money out of us while driving our program even deeper into the abyss.
